Willcox survives elimination to set up world No.1 test

Perth Now20-05-2025
Local qualifier Jacob Willcox has fought through tricky conditions and a bout of illness to advance out of the Margaret River Pro elimination round and into a match-up against world No.1 Italo Ferreira.
Willcox, who grew up surfing Main Break, had to draw on all of his experience to navigate lumpy 8-10ft conditions on Tuesday, posting a two-wave score of 11.03 to edge out Barron Mamiya of Hawaii (9.24) and fellow Australian Ryan Callinan (8.20) in the first heat of the day.
The 27-year-old was a World Surf League championship tour rookie in 2024 but failed to re-qualify for this season after missing the mid-season cut. He took out the local trials last week to win a place in this year's Pro.
'That was just like a washing machine out there,' Willcox said after his heat win.
'I feel like I've watched a lot of heats out here, especially when it was a QS (qualifying series event) back in the day, and it was always big and rouge just like this. I was stoked just to get a few waves because I've been sick as a dog the past few days and that was my first surf since my last heat. It was good just to get back in the water.'
The round-of-32 match-up with former world champion Ferreira comes after the Brazilian powerhouse dominated a three-cornered opening round heat on Saturday that also included Australian CT rookie George Pittar.
Willcox, who was only able to put up two scores of 2.50 for a 5.00 total in that heat to Ferreira's 14.10 and Pittar's 10.33, said he had made adjustments that would hopefully help him take it up to the men's ranking leader.
'I had such a shocker that first day, I rode the wrong board and couldn't even get off the bottom so it felt good just to get out there on the right board and do a turn,' he said.
'It's going to be fun, I feel like the heat the other day (with Ferreira) I couldn't really even compete but this is fun conditions. He is one of my favourite surfers so it's going to be good to have a battle against him.
'I think it's about trying to find the best waves, whoever gets the best waves today will probably get through, it's just hard to find them.'
Callinan's exit sees him anchored in 33rd place in the rankings and resigned to missing this year's cut.
The goofy-footer had to withdraw from the event in Portugal due to injury and skipped the recent Gold Coast Pro for the birth of his first child, meaning he missed out on two point-scoring opportunities.
In other results, Aussie wild-cards Winter Vincent and Mikey McDonagh advanced out of the elimination round along with Mamiya, Imaikalani deVault and Ian Gentil of Hawaii and Crosby Colapinto and Edgard Groggia of Brazil.
Dievid Silva of Brazil, who was eliminated alongside Callinan will also miss the cut, while Seth Moniz of Hawaii and Alejo Muniz of Brazil are currently inside the cut-line but face a nervous wait.

Handscomb marks milestone match with classy county ton

Former Australian Test batter Peter Handscomb has marked his 200th first-class game with a century to help put his English county side Leicestershire in control of their top-of-the-table clash with Derbyshire. The Victorian, who played 20 Tests for Australia, is captain at Leicestershire and has steered the side to the top of the County Championship's second division, with Derbyshire second. Handscomb resumed the second day's play on Wednesday on what must have been a very nervous 99 alongside Lewis Hill (132no), with the team cruising at 3-357. The Australian quickly brought up his century but was out soon afterwards for 101 (171 balls, five fours) after a 191-run stand with Hill. Hill also brought up a milestone, reaching 150 before being dismissed for 151 (310 balls, 12 fours). Leicestershire added only 41 more to their overnight score as Derbyshire's Luis Reece finished with 6-56 to bowl out the visitors for 398. When the home side batted, Rehan Ahmed took six wickets to add to his opening-day century as Leicestershire skittled Derbyshire for just 189 to establish a commanding first-innings lead of 209. Ahmed, who registered 115 with the bat on Tuesday, then emulated Reece's exploits with a career-best 6-51, including removing Derbyshire top-scorers Caleb Jewell (54) and Harry Came (56), to keep his side in control. In other action, Middlesex skipper Leus du Plooy joined teammates Max Holden and Kane Williamson in making a century before declaring on 8-625 at home to Northamptonshire. The visitors reached 4-126 at stumps, trailing by 499, after Holden and Williamson increased their respective overnight scores from 137 to 151 and 88 to 114 and Du Plooy plundered 105. At Cheltenham, Australian allrounder Chris Green and Tom Hartley starred with the bat as Lancashire assumed the upper hand against Gloucestershire. Green posted 160 from 199 balls and Hartley hit 130 off 153 deliveries in a formidable first-innings total of 557 before unbeaten pair Ben Charlesworth (104) and Joe Phillips (60) helped the hosts to 1-179 in response after captain Cameron Bancroft (2) was trapped lbw by Sir James Anderson. Ben Kellaway and Colin Ingram combined to give Glamorgan the ascendancy against Kent at Cardiff. Resuming together at the crease, Kellaway ended on 90 and Ingram hit 87 in a first-innings total of 327 before Kent replied with 1-106 in their second innings, trailing by 66. In Division One, Jack Leach claimed 6-63 as Somerset wrapped up a five-wicket win over Durham inside two days of their clash at Taunton. The visitors, who resumed on 2-5 in their second innings, were bowled out for 190, with offspinner Archie Vaughan assisting Leach with 4-85. Somerset required 86 for victory and reached the target in 19.2 overs, despite 4-39 from Durham's Callum Parkinson. Lyndon James hit an unbeaten 203 for second-placed Nottinghamshire against Hampshire. James's knock off 236 balls included 20 fours and eight sixes as the away side, who resumed on 5-241, declared on 8-578 at Southampton. Hampshire trail by 498 runs after closing on 80 without loss.

De Minaur opens Washington campaign with solid win

Alex de Minaur has made an impressive start to his Washington Open campaign, notching a straight-sets victory over China's Bu Yunchaokete. Playing his first event since his heartbreaking defeat to Novak Djokovic in the fourth round at Wimbledon, the Australian No.1 claimed a morale-boosting 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 win to set up a last-16 clash with Czech Jiri Lehecka. As seventh seed at the tournament, de Minaur was favourite to see off world No.75 Bu. Now the Australian can take heart from a solid performance at the hardcourt ATP 500 tournament as he builds towards next month's US Open, where last year he reached his third consecutive grand slam quarter-final. De Minaur has enjoyed previous success in the American capital. In 2018, then ranked No.72, he made a surprise run to his first ATP 500 final, where he lost 6-2 6-4 to Alexander Zverev. Now 26, the world No.13 will look to make further progression at the Washington Open after racking up his 280th career win and 31st this season as he continues his quest to return to the top 10. However, there was no such joy for De Minaur's compatriot Aleksandar Vukic, the Sydneysider suffering a 6-3 6-2 defeat to the top-seeded Taylor Fritz. American Fritz was making his first appearance since his impressive semi-final run at Wimbledon, where he gave Carlos Alcaraz a real test. And Australia's world No.24 Alexei Popyrin is also out after a bruising 7-5 5-7 6-3 defeat to China's Yibing Wu, who claimed his first win over a top-25 player in over two years in two hours and 37 minutes.
