A section of users claimed that Faasos and its sibling brands were once good but now their quality is deteriorating. They reportedly use visual AI for quality checks.
It was Pune in the 2010s. Two founders, Jaydeep Barman and Kallol Banerjee, opened a small quick-serve eatery selling hot kathi rolls. They called it Faasos, short for 'Fanatic Activism Against Substandard Occidental Sh*t." The name was quirky, the food was good, the ambition was huge. The business? Bleeding money.
Despite loyal customers, glowing reviews, and packed lunch hours, Faasos was failing. The bills outpaced the biryani, and by all logic, the startup should have quietly shuttered like so many others. And then came a single insight.
According to a now-viral Instagram video, the Faasos founders stumbled upon a critical statistic: 80 per cent of their sales were from deliveries, not walk-ins. So why were they wasting money on expensive storefronts?
The solution? Ditch the restaurant. Keep the kitchen. In that pivot, Faasos birthed what we now call the cloud kitchen model, a revolutionary approach that powers most food deliveries in urban India today. It was smart, scrappy, and quietly brilliant. Instead of building more restaurants, Faasos built kitchens that could serve multiple virtual brands under one roof.
The comeback wasn't instant.
Flush with a new strategy, Faasos tried expanding into pizzas but failed again because customers didn't want pizzas from a roll shop.
So, they rebranded the same pizza under a new name: Oven Story. With no links to Faasos, Oven Story soared. This became a pattern.
They launched Behrouz Biryani, Lunch Box, Firangi Bake, Mandarin Oak, and over a dozen more. All different cuisines, all separate brands. But behind the scenes? Same kitchen. Same parent company. Rebel Foods was born.
Today, Faasos is the only one who speaks in Rebel's sprawling wheel of delivery brands. The company claims to operate over 1,100 'internet restaurants" across India and abroad. How? Because a single cloud kitchen can run 6-8 brands simultaneously, from biryani to momos to pasta. Think Unilever but for food.
People in the comments section of the video were floored.
'Never knew all of this came under the same chain. Amazing," read a comment. A user wrote, 'I never knew that oven story is their brand."
Someone said, 'Even Sweet Truth is one of their brands which serves one of the best desserts." A user wrote, 'Didn't know the Oven Story was Faaso's and I love Behrouz biryani too." Someone asked, 'Do they operate all brands from a single kitchen or separate kitchens."
There were, however, several others who felt that the quality of both rolls and pizzas have deteriorated over the years. 'Fassos rolls were amazing back in 2019-20," a comment read.
Another Instagram user wrote, 'Don't know how they are still in business. They were good once but now it feels like frozen food flash heated."
Faasos and its sibling brands face questions about transparency, food quality consistency and the problems of digital-only dining.
One user said, 'Stopped eating/ordering from Faasos when they sent poor quality food which led to health issue. Minor one, but the company's lack of response and ownership in admitting the error led me to shut it out."
A user claimed that he has seen Faasos' cloud kitchen. 'I've seen a cloud kitchen in my area that makes food for Faasos, oven story and other associated brands. There's no hygiene, it's dirty and disgusting outside and smells like garbage overall. I shudder to think what's inside. Since then I've stopped ordering from cloud kitchens."
Despite mixed public opinion, Rebel Foods runs like a high-tech engine, not a typical restaurant chain. It uses AI to forecast demand, visual AI for quality checks, automated cooking systems, and centralised sourcing to keep operations efficient and food consistent.

However, instead of easing processes, the transition revealed previously unrecorded tuition balances, some dating back two years. These amounts surfaced once the new system went live in July, blindsiding students with unexpected financial obligations. Between January and June 2025, students had limited access to their financial accounts due to the transition. While the university claims students were notified in advance, many say they were unaware that past dues would resurface, and in some cases, alter their financial standing drastically. Financial aid losses and academic impact The consequences have been severe. Several students have reported: Loss of scholarships and fellowships Housing stipends revoked Holds on class registration and campus housing Suspended access to campus jobs With the fall semester nearing, students were left scrambling to settle debts before registration deadlines. Many of those affected are low-income or first-generation students, already managing tight budgets. The lack of timely updates during the data blackout further limited their ability to plan or respond. Social media campaigns and crowdfunding As institutional support lagged, students turned to social media and crowdfunding platforms to raise emergency funds. A student-run Instagram account emerged as a central hub, sharing personal stories, tracking cases, and organising mutual aid. Some campaigns gained viral traction, with students successfully raising thousands of dollars through donations from peers, alumni, and strangers. Still, many remain in financial limbo, trying to meet payment deadlines to avoid being forced to pause or abandon their education. University response and unresolved concerns In a statement, Howard University said nearly half of the impacted student accounts have been resolved through financial aid, student payments, or revised payment plans. To address growing concerns, the university has expanded its financial aid office hours, both in-person and online, to assist affected students. Despite these efforts, the episode has raised wider concerns about administrative transparency and communication. Critics argue the institution failed to provide clear contingency plans or adequate student support during the system transition: especially for vulnerable student populations. As the academic year approaches, students and advocates continue to call for: Clearer communication during digital transitions Proactive financial support Greater accountability from institutions during technical overhauls The situation remains fluid, with students, faculty, and community members closely monitoring how Howard addresses the ongoing fallout.

ADVERTISEMENT It has been a pretty range-bound market but of late, the FII selling is getting a little bit larger and even though there is DII support, the Nifty range is getting lower by the day. What do you think is the worry point for the market? Gurmeet Chadha: Three-four things are worrying the market. One is this uncertainty. The market can price in risk and so, if the event is over, should be able to price it in. The tariff deadline is now weighing on the market because since July first week, we have been hearing that we will have an interim deal, and then there was news that there will be no deal and we will have tariffs and a comprehensive deal will happen sometime in September or October. So, there is a bit of an uncertainty there, and that is why the export sensitive sectors have been underperforming the market. Whether it is auto, textiles, or anything that is more global supply chain facing, especially US-facing is underperforming. Secondly, we have seen other countries like Japan, China get some deals and there has been a bit of a pause. Then, there was a deal with Indonesia which also means that the tactical money, the short-term money keeps hopping from one emerging market to the other or some other markets where trade deals are happening. So, there is a bit of a tactical move here. I do not think we should read too much into the FII selloffs because that has happened mostly after the trade deals got postponed and earnings also have been very soft as was expected. For example, Kotak was disappointing because the Q1 update was very good. For IT companies, the commentary has been much weaker than what the market thought it would be and the news of layoffs did not help matters. So, it is a combination of all these factors and the next few days in my mind are important from a direction point of view. We have a Fed FOMC meeting, rate cut decision today. We have big tech earnings in the US and the first August tariff line. So, too many things are happening, but the good part is, it has largely been range-bound. Whenever the numbers are good, wherever the news is positive, the market is rewarding it. Yes, it is. And look at L&T, another strong quarter in terms of the order inflows for them. Revenues have been consistent, margins in line with last year and more importantly, the commentary. L&T is a company that gives colour on which way the economy is headed. We are finally seeing that meaningful move on L&T. Gurmeet Chadha: Yes, a long view and this is one stock which has not really participated the way it does in larger bull runs. What I liked about L&T other than the order book is the good execution. The net working capital has finally come down to 10.1%, as was their aspiration for the last four-five years when they launched their five-year plan called Lakshya. So, net working capital coming down by more than 300 basis points is extremely heartening. Also, the Middle East orders will surprise on the upside. They will get some very large orders from the Middle East across the spectrum, hydrocarbon, water and then there will be a GCC-related tailwind for them. The only thing is if you see the order mix, the government still accounts for 75% and the private sector for 25%. I would like the private ratio to improve. Once the private sector book picks up, there will probably be a bigger re-rating. L&T has a lot of value unlocking to be done at some point of time. We will see that over the next couple of years. It is part of our core portfolio and probably one of the stronger largecaps which should do well over the next two-three years. ADVERTISEMENT 28 out of the Nifty 50 companies have come out with their numbers, with seven of them being below and only six being a beat versus estimate so far. What is your broad sense on the earnings that we have seen and what is the outlook for the rest? Gurmeet Chadha: That is where the bigger concern is. FII flows will come and go, but if you see the peg right now, if we are 21 times earnings and earning growth is 7, we are around three times peg and that is expensive. I do not think FIIs will allocate money there. So, once we see a 12-13% earning growth, that is when it will drop below 2. Even the price book is above 3, which is also slightly on the higher side. Once we see meaningful changes there, that is when we will have a sustained rally. Otherwise, the news on tariffs and some decisions here and there, can at best be 5%. ADVERTISEMENT For a sustained up move, to break out from the previous high, we need good earnings growth and that's why I am saying this is a tougher year and it is very important to have the right balance in terms of asset allocation. The focus has to be more preservation right now and to get into good stocks where earnings are strong. One should not overpay and keep looking at other events like gold, precious metals, commodities, even fixed income. We will see us starting to cut rates. There is more movement happening in terms of bond yields and even long-dated bonds can give good returns. YouTube added to Australia's under-16 social media ban as government targets Big Tech with world-first crackdown starting December 10 Synopsis Australia plans to ban social media for users under 16. This includes platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and now YouTube. The government aims to protect children from harmful content. Age verification methods are still under review. Companies that fail to comply will face hefty fines. Messaging apps and online games are not included in the ban. The Albanese government has announced that YouTube will be included in its new social media ban for users under the age of 16, a decision placing Australia at the global forefront of digital child protection. ADVERTISEMENT The initial decision was to exempt the platform, but it changed following a formal recommendation from eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, who cited a national survey of 2,600 minors showing that nearly 40 percent of children reported exposure to harmful content on YouTube, more than any other platform. While YouTube content will still be viewable without an account, users under 16 will be unable to comment, upload videos, or access age-restricted content. YouTube Kids app remains exempt. The sweeping policy described by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as 'world-leading' aims to reduce mental health harms by delaying children's exposure to addictive algorithms, cyberbullying, and graphic or inappropriate content. 'Social media is doing social harm to our children, and I want Australian parents to know that we have their backs,' Albanese said during a joint announcement with Communications Minister Anika Wells on Wednesday(July 30). ADVERTISEMENT The ban will apply to major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Reddit, X, and now, YouTube, which was originally slated for exemption. ADVERTISEMENT That remains one of the most contentious aspects of the law. Under the legislation, platforms may request users provide a government-issued ID, but cannot require it as the only form of age verification. Instead, they must implement 'reasonable alternatives.'Trials of AI-driven age estimation tools, such as facial scans and voice analysis, have shown inconsistent results. In some government tests, 15-year-olds were mistakenly classified as adults in their 30s. ADVERTISEMENT The final report on age-checking technology is expected later this year and will guide compliance that fail to comply may face fines of up to AUD 49.5 million (USD ~$33 million). The burden of enforcement lies with social media companies, not users or families. Children who bypass restrictions will not be penalized. Existing underage accounts must also be deactivated.
