Oman: Dhofar invests $93mln in road development to support urban growth
Salalah – Dhofar Municipality is pressing ahead with a package of infrastructure projects aimed at upgrading internal and dual carriageways across the governorate. More than 300km of roads are being constructed and paved, at a total cost exceeding RO36mn, in line with Oman Vision 2040 priorities of sustainable development. Covering several wilayats, the projects fall under the Sustainable Governorates and Cities Development Programme and are designed to ease mobility, improve safety, and support urban and economic expansion by enhancing the quality of road services for citizens, residents and visitors. According to officials, construction and paving works have been completed or are ongoing in Salalah, Taqah, Mirbat, Sadah, Shaleem and Hallaniyat Islands, Thumrait, Muqshin, Al Mazyouna, Rakhyut and Dalkhut. The projects follow technical and safety standards, with emphasis on long-term infrastructure sustainability. Ahmed bin Mohsen al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, said Salalah alone is seeing the development of 161km of internal roads, including in plains and mountainous areas, at a cost exceeding RO9mn. He confirmed the municipality is also working on dualisation of 9km of Sultan Qaboos Street, currently 22% complete, at a cost of RO16.3mn. In Thumrait, the municipality will pave 40km of internal roads and begin dualisation of a 4.5km stretch of Thumrait Street, which will include decorative lighting. The combined value of the two projects is estimated at over RO3mn. In Taqah, work has started on 32km of internal roads at a cost of approximately RO1.7mn, while Mirbat will see 20km of roads paved at a cost of RO995,000. Dualisation of 3.5km of Mirbat Street is also expected to be completed this year at a cost of RO1.96mn. The municipality is undertaking road construction across several other wilayats. These include 50km of roads in Sadah and 15km of roads in Muqshin. Ghassani said the infrastructure expansion reflects the government's commitment to development projects that directly improve citizens' lives and ensure balanced growth across the governorate. Dubai completes Dhs190m landscaping projects to support green urban vision
Image: Dubai Media Office Dubai Municipality has completed landscaping and afforestation projects worth Dhs190m ($51.7m) across major road intersections in the emirate during the first half of 2025, reinforcing the city's commitment to sustainability and its long-term urban development plans. The large-scale works span more than 3 million square metres and include the planting of over 300,000 trees and seedlings, alongside 222,500 square metres of ground cover and flowers. The projects are part of the Green Dubai initiative and align with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aimed at enhancing public spaces and quality of life for residents and visitors. Smart irrigation systems powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technology have been integrated into the landscaping to optimise water use and operational efficiency. These include underground pump systems connected to remote-control networks, enabling real-time monitoring to ensure sustainable irrigation practices. 'Our aim is to reinforce Dubai's distinctive urban and aesthetic identity and solidify its position as a leading sustainable global city,' said Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, DG of Dubai Municipality. Key enhancements included decorative fencing and vertical lighting installations inspired by traditional Arab design. Dubai Municipality has launched the latest edition of its summer training initiative, the 'Future Talents' programme, aimed at equipping 200 students with essential skills for the future labour market. The programme targets students from universities, colleges, and high schools (Grades 11 and 12), offering practical training across a variety of administrative, technical, and field disciplines. The initiative reflects Dubai Municipality's commitment to empowering young Emirati talent by providing experiential learning opportunities aligned with the Municipality's areas of specialisation. It also supports the broader objective of preparing a future-ready generation capable of contributing to national development. Abdulla Khalfan, Acting Director of the Human Resources Department at Dubai Municipality, said: "Future Talents is one of the key programmes implemented by Dubai Municipality to attract and develop promising national talent. |It enables students to enhance their academic knowledge with practical experience, helping them gain the skills and insights required to navigate the evolving labour market and seize future opportunities.' He added: "The training agenda is designed to mirror students' academic fields, combining theoretical learning with real-world application. This approach provides students with a clearer understanding of their chosen disciplines while offering a first-hand view of institutional operations and professional responsibilities.' The four-week programme runs eight hours per day and places students across various Dubai Municipality departments based on their academic specialisation. The experience is structured to foster a comprehensive understanding of institutional work culture while sharpening core competencies such as communication, teamwork, and punctuality. In addition to building technical knowledge, the programme helps students develop personal and professional networks to support their career progression. Last year, Dubai Municipality trained 60 university and college students across 16 departments through the 'Future Talents' summer programme.
