
LG aims for global AI elite with next-gen Exaone platform
LG AI Research unveiled on Tuesday its evolving Exaone ecosystem, introducing a series of its latest and newly developed Exaone-based AI models and services co-developed with global partners.
At the 'LG AI Talk Concert 2025' held at LG Sciencepark in Seoul, the institute showcased its lineup of AI innovations built on proprietary foundation models, including Exaone 4.0, Korea's first hybrid AI model combining reasoning and generative capabilities and Exaone Path 2.0, a precision medical AI system.
To secure global competitiveness, the institute aims to expand its Exaone across all major industries, including biotechnology and finance.
"The evolution of agentic AI directly leads to physical AI, a technology that transforms the real world. LG AI Research will accelerate the development of physical AI technology, enabling AI to perceive, judge, and alter actual environments,' Lee Hong-lak, co-president who was newly appointed Monday, said.
While LG largely kept its Exaone models out of the public's reach as a B2B product, the company first unveiled its cutting-edge Exaone 4.0 model via API through the Friendly AI inference platform for companies and institutions, enabling real-world business integration.
Another major unveiling was Exaone 4.0 VL, a multimodal vision-language model. It is capable of interpreting complex professional documents, images and molecular structures.
LG AI Research said the model outperformed Meta's Llma 4 Scout in internal benchmarks, positioning it as a key component of the Exaone ecosystem – serving as its 'eyes' in real world applications.
Also unveiled for the first time include the beta version of ChatExaone, an enterprise AI agent designed for secure internal use and previously limited to LG Group employees. The beta is currently available only to enterprise or business accounts.
Exaone Data Foundry, a platform that streamlines the production of high-quality training data, and Exaone On-Premise, a full-stack enterprise AI solution built entirely with Korean hardware and software for deployment in secure and independent environments, were also unveiled for the first time during the event.
Arman Sahovic, APAC Head of Data Platform Solutions at the London Stock Exchange Group, introduced business intelligence services developed with Exaone. Sahovic explained that LSEG and LG AI Research are collaborating to create a service that predicts investment asset return trends and generates reports based on LSEG's data, news and disclosure information, thereby aiding investment decisions globally.
At the event, chief researchers at LG AI Research expressed their ambition to become one of the global top three players in the AI field. Their immediate goal is to lead in generative and agentic AI, with a longer-term vision to pioneer the era of physical AI, where systems can reason autonomously and take action to solve real-world problems.
'The race to secure AI technology is no longer just a corporate issue — it has expanded into a competition between nations. Without a self-sustaining ecosystem, dependency deepens, and we risk falling behind. Building our own ecosystem is essential,' said Kim Yoo-chul, head of Strategic Division at the institute.
Lee Hwa-young, vice president leading AI Biz Dev and DX Group, also urged for government support in infrastructure.
'To build good AI, you need data, talent, technology and infrastructure. LG has everything except infrastructure,' Lee said. 'The government is now stepping in to build that infrastructure, and we are working hard to stay at the forefront of technology and become one of the global top three in AI.'
The institute's two co-Presidents succeeding Bae Kyung-hoon following his appointment as Minister of Science and ICT, also made their first official appearance since their appointments. Lim Woo-hyung, one of the co-presidents, said he was proud of Bae's new role and vowed to continue leading the institute with dedication.
'Our goal is not just to advance AI technology, but to apply it directly in industrial settings and create real business value. We're actively exploring how to strengthen AI capabilities across LG affiliates and accelerate digital transformation,' Lim said.
Co-head Lee Hong-lak said, 'I will work to elevate LG AI Research to global excellence. We will continue developing Exaone into a world-class technology, support its adoption across the group and help uncover new growth engines.'

Miracell launches Korea's first generative AI voice system for hospitals
Korean stem cell research company Miracell has introduced the nation's first generative AI-powered voice consultation system designed for medical institutions. Co-developed with Europe-based Vee, a Warsaw-listed AI company, the solution marks a major shift in healthcare automation. The company said Monday it has secured exclusive distribution rights for Vee's AI solution across Asia and is working closely with Vee Korea to customize the system for local hospitals. Unlike traditional rule-based ARS systems, the new AI tool uses natural language processing to deliver 24-hour conversational support, handling appointment scheduling, billing inquiries, patient reminders and general questions. The system is particularly effective during nights and weekends, when staffing is limited. It integrates with hospital customer relationship management systems and supports both inbound and outbound calls. Hospitals can trial the solution free for one month, lowering the adoption barrier. 'Generative AI can dramatically improve service quality in medical care,' said Shin Hyun-soon, CEO of Miracell. 'This isn't just an upgrade — it's a survival strategy for the health care sector.' Vee provides the underlying large language model engine, customized for Korean language and clinical context. Korean battery maker eyes edge over Chinese rivals by diversifying cost-effective battery offerings SK On has begun setting up a pilot line for unidirectional prismatic battery cells at its Daejeon research center this week, as demand grows for this more space-efficient battery format in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. 'Unidirectional' or 'top terminal' cells refer to a battery design in which current flows through terminals placed on the top, optimizing the use of space and simplifying their integration into EVs. Prismatic cells can be made rectangular, unlike the more traditional cylindrical cells. This allows for higher energy density, as there is less empty space between the cells when packed together to make batteries. This initiative marks the completion of SK On's prismatic battery road map, following its earlier launch of a pilot line in 2023 for 'bidirectional' or 'side terminal' prismatic cells, which feature terminals on opposite sides to enhance current distribution and thermal efficiency. 'The initial setup of SK On's unidirectional prismatic battery pilot line — involving equipment delivery, positioning, unpacking, and installation — has start this week,' said an industry source familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'Full-scale construction will begin next week, focusing on integrating utilities such as electrical connections.' The source added that sample production will commence soon after the line setup is complete, with a mass production schedule to be determined through client negotiations. The move is part of SK On's broader push to narrow the gap with domestic rival Samsung SDI, which already mass-produces unidirectional prismatic cells, while also preparing for large-scale production of bidirectional cells. LG Energy Solution is likewise developing prismatic batteries through a partnership with General Motors in the US and is reportedly building a pilot line at its Ochang plant in North Chungcheong Province. However, the specific type of prismatic cell remains undisclosed. Demand for prismatic battery cells is accelerating due to their high energy density, enhanced safety, and packaging efficiency — qualities that make them well-suited for both electric vehicles and energy storage systems. According to India-based Market Report Analytics, the global prismatic battery market is expected to grow from approximately $25 billion in 2028 to $40 billion by 2033. Automakers including Hyundai Motor Group, GM, Volkswagen, and Ford are increasingly adopting prismatic designs for next-generation EVs and hybrid vehicles. Samsung SDI, for example, signed a seven-year deal with Hyundai Motor in 2023 to supply batteries for its European EV lineup between 2026 and 2032. GM is working with LG Energy Solution on similar deployments. Though SK On has not disclosed specific customers, media reports suggest it may pursue supply deals with China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, following a strategic agreement signed last year. Geely owns global brands such as Geely Auto, Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus. SK On first unveiled its unidirectional and bidirectional prismatic prototypes at the InterBattery 2025 exhibition in Seoul in March. Industry experts say its expansion into unidirectional designs could help SK On build a more diversified customer base and better compete with Chinese firms such as CATL and CALB. Those companies have primarily focused on bidirectional formats, which are optimal for cell-to-pack systems that eliminate conventional battery modules. In contrast, unidirectional cells are better suited for modular systems, where battery cells are arranged into packs via intermediate modules — still widely favored in many EV platforms.
