Western Sydney schoolgirl Waiaria Ellis debuted for the Wallaroos last weekend, playing for her country against her other home side.
The Laurie O'Reilly cup match between the Black Ferns and the Wallaroos at Sky Stadium meant the Australian pocket rocket became the second-youngest debutant in Wallaroos history at 17 years and 305 days.
Ellis, who is nicknamed 'Baba', was just 60 days short of Caitlyn Halse's record set in 2024.
"I wasn't expecting to debut so soon. I thought that I would have had a few more training camps and that, because I'd been to a few, but I just wasn't expecting it, so it's literally so surreal," Ellis said.
"There's definitely no better place to debut, to be honest. Like, just being Māori, then being able to debut in New Zealand and versing New Zealand was pretty crazy, but it was amazing."
The Castle Hill High Schooler started in the number 14 jersey on the same wing as Katelyn Vaha'akolo.
The
Black Ferns clinched a 37-12 win
over the Aussies.

Her mum flew over the Tasman to the capital, and her koro, nan, and aunty drove down from Tūrangi.
The Ngāti Tūwharetoa descendant said that having the backing of her family was everything.
"I'm just so proud to be Māori. Our culture, our connection to the land, and just my family. Family is a lot to us. It is important."
Her dad Ben Ellis played in the NRL for St George Illawarra and captained the New Zealand Māori Rugby League team in 2008. Her sister Ruby-Jean Kennard-Ellis has also played in the NRLW for the Parramatta Eels.
The young Ellis looked up to both her dad and her big sister.
"My dad helped coach me and everything, and he played in the NRL as well. He knows a lot about footy and he's just helped me a lot with everything in my career.
"But then, a few years ago, my sister debuted for Para, Parramatta NRLW, and she was the first junior Parramatta player to play for the women - the first junior one to come through the path - she was actually a very big idol of mine, I looked up to her."
She also praised her teammate Caitlyn Halse, who is another strong contender for the number 15 jersey.
"She's very, very good, and she's so young, like, she's just a year older than me but she's achieved so much, and, she's just such a great player."
Ellis hasn't been playing the 15-aside game long but owes her nifty playmaking ability to rugby league - the sport she has been playing since she was five years old.
She has also worn the green and gold in junior Australian gymnastics, Oztag, and schoolgirls sevens.

In just her second year on the rugby pitch, she scored a spot in the NSW Waratahs Super Rugby Women's team at 16.
The Waratahs won the Super W championship back-to-back, defeating the Queensland Reds 43-21 this year.
"Super W season is one of my favourites. The girls are just really good to be around."
With a Wallaroo cap under her belt, Ellis wants to see where her rugby career can take her.
"Australia has given me everything, all my opportunities and stuff. So I feel like that's who I should be representing."
"But also, if I was in a black jersey, I'd be very proud to be in a black jersey as well - both I'd be very grateful for if I ever had to swap for anything."
And the utility back isn't limiting her options.
"I definitely would want to give sevens a crack."
But for now, Ellis' focus is impressing selectors for the Women's Rugby World Cup in England.
"Obviously I do other sports and stuff, but I've just been really concentrating on 15s, just because that's, like, the World Cup is literally the pinnacle of our sport. Everyone wants to achieve that, so that would be pretty amazing."

Wallaroos head coach Jo Yapp said in a pre-match statement that the coaching staff are "all really pleased for Waiaria."
"She has an excellent skillset and her youthfulness has a great effect on the playing group. We are confident in her ability to take the next step at this level."
Australia is hosting Wales in a two-test series on 26 July in Brisbane and 1 August in Sydney in preparations for the Rugby World Cup.
A squad of 32 will be selected for the World Cup following the match in Sydney, then will jet off for the UK on 11 August.

New Zealand's Tim Seifert during the Blackcaps v Pakistan 3rd T20I at Eden Park Friday, 21 March Photo: Andrew Cornaga/ Black Caps coach Rob Walter believes the team's adaptability is paving the way for their success in Zimbabwe. New Zealand went through the T20 Tri-Series unbeaten, scoring a three-run win over South Africa in the final in Harare on Sunday. Walter, who is on his first tour in charge, said the players adapted well to the local conditions. "Played on three different pitches through the series and all three of them played differently," Walter told RNZ. "The way the guys were able to adapt to the conditions and the opposition was excellent, both with bat and ball." Walter used 18 different players during the Tri-Series. Tim Seifert, Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway were the top three run scorers in the tournament, while Matt Henry grabbed 10 wickets. Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi had the best bowling economy rate of 5.75, with Zak Foulkes just behind him on 6.31. Conway wasn't originally named in the squad for the Tri-Series, but was called up to replace the injured Finn Allen. He made the most of his opportunity, averaging 45 over four games. "Dev is a quality player and sometimes form can be a bit wanting, but ultimately these guys will shine at some point," Walter said. "It was good to see him expressing himself and playing with some nice freedom New Zealand's Matt Henry (L) and Mitchell Santner. Pasifika Sipoti in brief for 28 July

Issak Fines-Leleiwasa scores a try for the ACT Brumbies. Photo: Photosport Former Wallaby Issak Fines-Leleiwasa is joining the Fijian Drua for the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season. Fines-Leleiwasa has featured for the Western Force in the past three years and had declared his intentions to play for Fiji, with his three-year international stand-down period coming to an end in October 2026. The 29-year-old made his Wallabies debut against France in 2023. He is eligible to play for Fiji through his Fijian-born father. The first eight teams to compete in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Professional League, due to kick off in January 2026, will be announced next month. OFC said its club licensing committee will review the assessments and recommend the successful applicants to the OFC executive committee for their decision. There are 13 clubs in the running, with four out of New Zealand, two each from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Australia, plus one club each from Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and Vanuatu. OFC professional league manager Stuart Larman said the the clubs have all worked hard to meet the requirements of the club licensing regulations. Tonga National Rugby League is seeking a new women's coach for the Pacific Championships. The person will take care of Tonga in their Pacific Cup fixtures against Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea, in October and November. Applications close on 1 August. Meanwhile, Melbourne Storm assistant coach Ryan Hinchcliffe will join Toa Samoa's head coach Ben Gardiner as an assistant for the men's Pacific Cup. Toa Samoa will meet Tonga and New Zealand in the competition. Fiji's under-20 men's rugby team will be part of the expanded World Rugby Under-20 Championship in 2026, scheduled to be hosted by Georgia. World Rugby announced the prestigious age-grade tournament has been expanded from the current 12 teams to 16 next year. Fiji, as the Oceania champion, will join hosts Georgia as well as USA, Japan and Uruguay at the event. World Rugby's Nigel Cass said the expansion is a significant step forward in the mission to enhance global competitiveness and provide more young players with the opportunity to shine on the international stage. The Vanuatu Judo Federation says they need government to invest in judo development, especially securing proper training facilities. VJF Vice President Nazario said a lot more success would be achieved with proper judo facilities or dojo. Vanuatu Daily Post reported the Vanuatu judo team, who trained without proper facilities, returned from the Pacific Mini Games in Palau with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Nazario said a lot of young athletes are taking up judo and a proper training facility is needed to better prepare judokas for upcoming tournaments. Fiji is to host two major futsal tournaments later this year. Oceania Football said the OFC Futsal Men's Cup will be held in Suva in September - after the tournament was moved from Solomon Islands. The OFC said the decision was made with member associations, considering the logistics of hosting the competition in Honiara. Fiji will also host the Futsal Men's Champions League, in late November, in Suva.

Boxing: NZ's Lani Daniels beaten in world title fight

Claressa Shields takes on Lani Daniels in Detroit. Photo: © DAZN 2025 New Zealand boxer Lani Daniels has fallen short in her bid to become the undisputed women's world heavyweight champion. Daniels lost to Claressa Shields by unanimous decision, with the American retaining her four title belts in Detroit. Shields outclassed the New Zealander throughout much of the contest, with Daniels not really challenging the champion until the later stages. The American's dominance grew as the fight went on and she landed some clean shots in the middle rounds as 37-year-old Daniels tired. Lani Daniels and Claressa Shields. Photo: Frank Balluff Daniels lifted her performance and traded punches with Shields in the eighth round, but the American was never really tested as she improved her record to 17-0. Shields said she expected Daniels to come out firing and was surprised the New Zealander started slowly. "I thought she wanted to fight, but she didn't really engage until the last three rounds," Shields told DAZN. "She was very tough and tricky toward the end, but I know I won every round." Shields became a five-weight world champion when she moved up to heavyweight earlier this year and beat Danielle Perkins to unify the division. The American is a three-weight undisputed champion, having previously held all four belts at middleweight and light-middleweight. Shields is expected to step away from the heavyweight division and move back down in weight, but she doesn't care who she fights next. "Anybody can get it," Shields said. "I want to make the biggest fights and the best fights." Sign up for Ngā Pitopito Kōrero, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.
