World media reacts as Rangers 'injustice' triggers spiteful Panathinaikos probe over an unforgivable error

Daily Record5 days ago
There there things to work on for Russell Martin's new-look side but the former Scotland international is delighted with the result.
You know it's been a successful night when you have the opposition's local media desperately seeking an intervention over a result they simply can't fathom.

Were there things to work on for Russell Martin 's new-look Rangers side? Of course, but they have to work out the kinks after a rousing 2-0 win over Panathinaikos in the first leg of their Champions League second round qualifier at Ibrox.

Giorgos Vagiannidis was sent off minutes after Findlay Curtis announced his arrival in light blue with the opener and that was followed up by jet-heeled Djeidi Gassama smashing home on his debut.

It wasn't the perfect night with the visitors spurning a series of golden chances, however, Martin and his bold ideas were evident on night one.
But no one was safe as one outlet attempted reverse psychology and Filip Djurisic, Vagiannidis and boss Rui Vitória, were all condemned over their role ahead of the return leg in Athens next week. Record Sport goes to Greece and beyond to see how others are viewing a thrilling night at Ibrox.
Kathimerini (Greece)
"The result does not do justice to the Greek team at all, with the visitors at Ibrox having major complaints from the referee who left them with 10 men early in the second half after a highly controversial second booking for Giorgos Vagiannidis.
"Panathinaikos was by far the better team in the first 50 minutes of the game, missing several chances and even hitting the woodwork in the 9th minute with Facundo Pellistri. Somehow Rangers kept a clean sheet and only started asking questions at the Panathinaikos goal after the 35th minute.
"Against the run of play the Scots took the lead with a well-balanced shot from a distance by Findlay Curtis. Giorgos Kyriakopoulos was denied a penalty despite getting kicked on the leg and a minute later Curtis powered the ball superbly into Bartlomiej Dragowski's net.

"As if that had not been enough, Vagiannidis got his marching orders through a very harsh second yellow card, to leave Panathinaikos with 10 men for about 40 minutes.
"That predictably led to the tipping of the game's balance to Rangers' favor, with the hosts scoring a second goal six minutes from time via Djeidi Gassama.
"The Greens paid for wasting their chances. However the return leg on July 30 at the Olympic Stadium of Athens will be a completely different game."

Sportime (Greece)
"It's hard to understand how Panathinaikos lost this game. A match that should have been won in the first half. But at the start of the second half, the picture was similar, with Panathinaikos pressing.
"Filip Djurisic is fatal, even more lethal than Giorgos Vayannidis. If we put them on the scale. The Serbian midfielder had clear chances to score. At least four, three of them classic. While in the 5th he takes a choice for no reason, for the home team to go on the counterattack and make it 1-0.
"His worst moment, of course, was when he stole the ball, found himself alone against Butland and didn't even take a shot!

"Vayannidis also had a bad day . He could have been sent off before the second yellow card, but the Lithuanian referee spared him, just as he did to Rangers. But the next time he gave him a card.
"And defensively, the Greek defender wasn't good, losing Curtis in the 1-0 phase. Let's not talk about the diving phase.."
A Bola (Portugal)
"Rui Vitória, coach of Greek side Panathinaikos , had a less than happy first night in the UEFA Champions League , losing the first leg of the second qualifying round of the European competition 0-2 against Scottish side Rangers. Vagiannidis , a target for Sporting in this summer transfer window, was sent off in the 58th minute.

"After the defeat, the 55-year-old Portuguese coach expressed confidence in the team's recovery and highlighted the team's strong performance up until Georgios Vagiannidis ' red card."
Gavros (Greece)
"Don't dare let Panathinaikos stay out of Europe. Not for Greek football, nor for the UEFA rankings. For us. For the laughs. For the show that this team consistently offers every year.

"Is it possible for the "ambassador" to be missing from Europe? It's not possible! And of course we can't stop hearing the joke "Greece, Europe, Panathinaikos", which makes us cry with laughter every time!
"Okay. Obviously, we don't care what Panathinaikos will do. We only care about the Legend moving forward, and that's what he's doing! But a little laugh with... our favourite team doesn't hurt!"
Proto Thema (Greece)
"Panathinaikos played its first official match of the new season at Ibrox Park, against Rangers for the 2nd qualifying round of the Champions League . The "green" fans have been dynamic, but those who stood out with the "good morning" were the Scottish fans, who raised a banner depicting the Parthenon and reading, "obstacles become our path", while also presenting the figure of the Goddess Athena."

She's amazing – Chloe Kelly thanks Sarina Wiegman for ‘giving her hope'

The Lionesses, defending the crown they won three summers ago in the Wembley final, made it a hat-trick of knockout-round comebacks on Sunday night after Alessia Russo cancelled out Arsenal team-mate Mariona Caldentey's opener to ultimately force a shootout. Substitute Kelly – who netted the extra-time winner in the Euro 2022 final – cooly converted after Hannah Hampton made two spectacular saves and Salma Paralluelo missed, writing more personal history and a satisfying ending to a fairy-tale 2025, one that began with the 27-year-old doubting if she would even make this squad. Made for the big moments ✨ — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 27, 2025 'She's amazing,' said Kelly, asked about a coach who has now led teams to three consecutive European trophies. 'She is an incredible woman. What she's done for this country, we should all be so grateful. What she has done for me individually, she gave me hope when I probably didn't have any, and she gave me an opportunity to represent my country again.' At the beginning of this year, Kelly was still at Manchester City, lacking playing time, and so unhappy that she took to social media to express her wish to leave the club and a situation she shared at the time had 'a huge impact on not only my career but my mental wellbeing', even considering whether or not she wanted to stay in the game. Kelly was left out of Sarina Wiegman's first squad due to a lack of minutes after securing a deadline-day loan move to Arsenal but was called up as an injury replacement in February and has enjoyed revelatory tournament, cementing herself as the most superlative of English super-subs. 'There were a lot of tears at full time,' said Kelly, 'Especially when I saw my family, because they are the people that got me through those dark moments and I am so grateful to be out the back end. If that's a story to tell someone who might be experiencing the same, then tough times don't last. 'Right around the corner was the Champions League final, I won that, and now a Euros final. 'So thank you to everyone who wrote me off. I'm grateful.' Kelly was rewarded with a permanent deal at Arsenal after her impressive loan spell. She added: 'I knew that I had to get game time, and representing England is never a given,' said Kelly. 'But what (Sarina) has done for the women's game, not just in England, but in the Netherlands, the whole women's game, she's taken it to another level.' It was Kelly's cross that teed up Russo for the 57th-minute equaliser on Sunday, and it was her deliveries that allowed Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang to level late in their quarter-final with Sweden, ultimately setting up their first dramatic shootout. Kelly's composed spot-kick was an anomaly in that error-strewn afair, and – though she revealed after Sunday's trophy lift that she had missed three penalties in training – she stepped up and fired home with the same remarkable composure again in the final, once again bearing the weight of England's expectations. Asked if Kelly's coolness was even coachable, Wiegman said: 'I think it's a little bit of both. It says something about the team environment and it says a lot about her character. Everyone brings something different, and she brings this.' Wiegman added: 'Every player has their own story, and I think every story is incredible on its own, but for her most of the stories are out in the open. 'I'm so happy for her. She has been fighting to come back and be at her highest level. She just wanted to take that penalty and celebrate and dance, but to be able to score that penalty under that pressure is very impressive.'

Celtic ‘in the mix' to sign Manchester City starlet who's started in UCL but ‘face competition from Championship sides'

CELTIC boss Brendan Rodgers urged his board to make more new signings after their 5-1 friendly defeat to Ajax. And the Hoops are reportedly looking to add defensive reinforcements from the top of the English Premier League. Simpson-Pusey made his first City appearance against the Hoops last summer, starting in a friendly in North Carolina which Celts won 4-3. The centre-back made his senior debut last season too and played six times in total for Pep Guardiola's side, including starts in the Premier League and Champions League. Those starts came during a difficult spell for City though and included a 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP, with Simpson-Pusey returning to the club's academy team for the last few months of the campaign. Advertisement The 19-year-old ended up being named Premier League 2 Player of the Year as he captained City to the title, and now reportedly wants to test himself back in senior football. The report claims that Celts will face competition from the English Championship for Simpson-Pusey, but that their status as a European side who will be competing for titles could make them favourites for his signature. It's also reported that the Manchester native will be the one to decide his destination for the 25/26 season. Rodgers has already seen central defenders Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke move on this summer, with Stephen Walsh possibly also on the way out. Advertisement Simpson-Pusey would be the latest in a line of players to star for both the Hoops and City. The 2000s saw the likes of Craig Bellamy, Georgios Samaras and Willo Flood feature for both sides. Shock scenes as Celtic and Ajax fans clash during Como Cup friendly tournament in Italy City's 2008 takeover and subsequent success meant that many of the ex-Blues to play for Celtic in the 2010s were younger players sent to cut their teeth north of the border. Amongst them were stars such as Scott Sinclair, Patrick Roberts and Jeremie Frimpong. Advertisement Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
