Syria forms committee to investigate violence in Sweida province
The week-long clashes which began on July 13 killed scores of people.
In a decree issued Thursday, the justice ministry said it sought to shed light on 'the circumstances and conditions that led to the events,' investigate 'attacks and violations against citizens' and refer any culprits to the judiciary.
A seven-member committee, including four judges, two lawyers and a brigadier general, would present its findings within three months, the decree said.
Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said the committee was formed to 'bring those involved to justice.'
Al-Wais expressed his hope that the investigation 'will lead to the preservation of the rights of all citizens ... and the protection of national unity and civil peace.'
The violence in Sweida had initially pitted local Druze fighters against Bedouin tribes, but rapidly escalated and saw the involvement of Syrian government forces as well as Israel, which has claimed it was acting to protect the Druze minority.

The US House Oversight Committee on Tuesday subpoenaed former president Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton for testimony on sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to letters posted on its website. The Clintons were among multiple former government officials -- including two of President Donald Trump's attorney generals from his first term -- summoned by investigators in a major escalation of the controversy surrounding the investigation into the disgraced financier, who died in 2019 awaiting trial for sex trafficking. The White House has been facing increasingly intense demands to be more transparent after the Justice Department angered Trump supporters -- many of whom believe Epstein was murdered in a cover-up -- when it confirmed last month that he had died by suicide and that his case was effectively closed. The department also said Epstein had no secret 'client list' -- rebuffing conspiracy theories held by Trump's far-right supporters about supposedly high-level Democratic complicity. Trump has urged his supporters to drop demands for the Epstein files, but Democrats in the Republican-led Congress -- with some support from majority lawmakers -- have also been seeking a floor vote to force their release. 'By your own admission, you flew on Jeffrey Epstein's private plane four separate times in 2002 and 2003,' committee chairman James Comer wrote to former president Clinton. 'During one of these trips, you were even pictured receiving a 'massage' from one of Mr. Epstein's victims. 'It has also been claimed that you pressured Vanity Fair not to publish sex trafficking allegations against your 'good friend' Mr. Epstein, and there are conflicting reports about whether you ever visited Mr. Epstein's island.' Other officials targeted by the panel include former FBI director James Comey, former special counsel Robert Mueller and ex-attorney generals Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, Bill Barr, Jeff Sessions, and Alberto Gonzales. Their depositions will take place between mid-August and mid-October. Comer also issued a subpoena to the Justice Department for records related to Epstein -- including its communications with Trump's predecessor Joe Biden and his officials. House Oversight Committee Democrats, backed by some Republicans, approved a subpoena in July for the Justice Department to hand over documents. Lawmakers have also been seeking testimony from Epstein's accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving 20 years in prison for her role in his alleged crimes -- although her cooperation is seen as unlikely. Meanwhile the Supreme Court's justices are expected to consider at a September 29 conference ahead of their October term whether to hear an appeal by Maxwell of her sex trafficking conviction.

Syrian and Turkish interior ministers discuss security cooperation in Ankara
LONDON: Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab discussed various topics with his Turkish counterpart, Ali Yerlikaya, during his official visit to Ankara this week. The two ministers explored ways to strengthen security cooperation and coordination, in addition to supporting and developing Syrian security institutions. Khattab highlighted the status of Syrian nationals who sought refuge in Turkiye during the civil war, calling for continued cooperation with Ankara to ensure their safe return home, the SANA agency reported. Yerlikaya wrote on X that his meeting with Khattab focused on providing essential support to the security and related units of the Syrian Interior Ministry. '(We discussed) sharing experience and providing an intensive training program and cooperating on the return of Syrians under temporary protection in our country,' he said. 'Strengthening security in Syria is vital for the consolidation of internal peace, economic development and social welfare,' he added, affirming Turkiye's support of Syria's stability.

Family of Saudi student killed in UK pay tribute to ‘best of brothers'
RIYADH: Family and friends of Mohammed Al-Qasim, the 20-year-old Saudi student who was stabbed to death in Cambridge, UK on Friday, have been sharing their condolences and memories online. His relatives have also set up a fundraiser to provide families in need in Saudi Arabia with clean water as a tribute. At the time of writing it had raised more than SR30,000 ($8,000). Al-Qasim was on a 10-week placement at the EF International Language Campus in the city when he was killed. Two men from Cambridge have been arrested on suspicion of murder and assisting an offender. Al-Qasim's uncle, Majed Abalkhail, said on X that his nephew's death 'has been a huge shock for all of us — especially since Mohammed came to Cambridge as a student, carrying nothing but dreams and hopes for the future.' 'We truly hope … that this will be the last such tragedy, and that full justice will be served, with everyone responsible held fully accountable. May Allah have mercy on Mohammed and grant him the highest place in paradise.' Abalkhail described his nephew as 'a young man raised upon goodness, and our hearts still weep over his loss.' Al-Qasim's sister, Jana, wrote on X that he was 'a man worth a thousand men, the true meaning of support, strength, and dignity.' 'I never knew the taste of fear for a single day, because I knew Mohammed was my backbone and my support after Allah,' she said. 'With the magnitude of his pride and love for me, I was proud of him and loved him many times more. Since our childhood, I would hear that brothers often annoy, quarrel, and fight with their siblings, but by Allah, he never raised his voice at me once, and I never saw from him anything but kindness and love.' Another sister, Thekra, said: 'O Allah, your servant Mohammed Al-Qasim was the best of brothers. Kind, gentle, and fearful of you among us. He never once raised his voice since the day my mother gave birth to him until you took him back to you.' Abdallah Al-Matrafi, who described himself as a neighbor of the family, said on X that Al-Qasim's 'late father, his brothers and his sons are among the finest people we have known in manners, character, appreciation, respect, and good neighborliness.'
