Chaba Kaew's Asian Cup dream ends after defeat

Bangkok Post07-07-2025
Thailand were denied a place in the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup finals in Australia after they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of India 2-1 at Chiang Mai's 700th Anniversary Stadium on Saturday night.
The victory meant India finished with a perfect 12 points in Group B of the qualifiers as former champions Thailand missed out on the finals.
With identical points and goal difference, both sides needed victory but the tie got off with action limited to the middle of the pitch.
Thailand enjoyed more possession but India were solid defensively as they worked tirelessly to close down the spaces.
However, the Indians made a good move when Anju Tamang cut the ball back for unmarked Sangita Basfore, who unleashed a shot from just outside the box past despairing Thai goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao.
Thailand upped the tempo but found India a resilient lot with the hosts limited to half chances as the South Asian side went into the break ahead.
The Chaba Kaew, however, needed only two minutes in the second half as Chatchawan Rodthong had a stroke of luck. Her shot from distance took a wicked bounce to beat Indian goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi as the hosts levelled the score.
India, however, refused to let Thailand build on the goal and their determination paid dividends in the 74th minute when defender Nirmala Devi floated her corner across with the ball finding Shilky Devi, who nodded it across for Basfore to head home past the Thai defence as India finally took their place at Australia 2026.

AIS banking on Premier League for growth

Advanced Info Service (AIS) is targeting strong growth of its fixed broadband business in the second half of this year, driven by English Premier League (EPL) content through pub-bar events and its network capability. The target is in line with AIS's strategy in the second half under the concept "Boosting your brighter future – connecting, enabling, and enriching fixed broadband customers". The AIS 3BB FIBRE3 service reinforces the company's commitment to supporting businesses, entrepreneurs and both public and private sectors -- driving strong, sustainable growth for Thailand's digital economy, said Yordchai Asawathongchai, head of commercial broadband business at AIS. He said the AIS 3BB FIBRE3 service remains the No.1 fixed broadband network in Thailand, with over 5 million users across all 77 provinces. He said the company has seen a growth opportunity as the broadband industry still has significant growth potential, with current household penetration at just 36.8% from the total 29 million households in the country. "That's why AIS 3BB FIBRE3 is committed to expanding and delivering innovations and solutions that fit every aspect of all digital lifestyles. Because in this era, it's no longer just about speed or bandwidth, it's about truly understanding and meeting the needs of every household." Mr Yordchai said the company also sees potential through the EPL broadcasting content via pub-bar events nationwide. Currently, there are more than 50,000 pubs and bars nationwide which have the potential to subscribe to Premier League content to serve their clients. He declined to elaborate regarding the subscriber growth target, saying the revenue growth for fixed broadband business this year should not be lower than that of 2024. Jasmine International Public Co Ltd is the exclusive rights holder for live broadcasts of the EPL and FA Cup in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia from 2025/26. It has partnered with AIS to bring the world's most popular football league content directly to Thai football fans. Mr Yordchai said AIS 3BB FIBRE3 is driving its broadband business forward through three core strategies: connecting, creating opportunities and delivering happiness. With more connectivity, he said customers can enjoy every match of the EPL live via AIS PLAY and MONOMAX streaming platforms. The AIS EPL package for pub, bar and restaurants begins at 2,800 baht per month. Beyond the sports content, AIS launched the AI 2G router model, supporting speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second (Gbps) via both Wi-Fi and local area network. The router reduces interference and latency by over 50%, while accelerating performance for applications like live streaming, online gaming and video conferencing. AIS has also launched the "pro-event" solution, offering high-speed internet access of up to 2 Gbps to meet the demands to organise next-generation events. This solution delivers direct, high-performance connectivity from the AIS and 3BB FIBRE3 networks to event venues, powered by cutting-edge technology that ensures maximum speed, stability and strength. It is designed for use both indoors and outdoors, covering locations nationwide. Mr Yordchai added AIS provides more happiness through the strategy enhancing families' quality of life and safety with high-speed internet packages bundled with comprehensive home protection with the AIS 3BB FIBRE3 Home Insurance package. Starting from 699 baht a month, customers receive free insurance coverage from MSIG, including protection against natural disasters up to 500,000 baht, burglary coverage for residential properties up to 100,000 baht, personal belongings and firefighting expense compensation up to 50,000 baht each and 24-hour emergency home assistance available once a year.

ONE Championship: Shadow ‘very upset' by No Contest, says elbow – not eye poke

Shadow Singha Mawynn was left frustrated after his co-main event bout at ONE Fight Night 33 ended in a No Contest – and said he believed his elbow, not an eye poke, caused the damage. The Thai striker appeared to be in full control of his featherweight Muay Thai clash with Younes Rabah at Lumpinee Stadium on Saturday morning, knocking the Algerian down near the end of the first round. But the contest was waved off shortly after the second frame began, following a disputed sequence that left Rabah covering his right eye on the canvas. 'In my view, I don't think that I poked his eye – but it is what it is,' Shadow told the Bangkok Post. 'So No Contest, yes.' The 25-year-old had dropped Rabah once already with a clean punch, and just moments after the restart they exchanged again – with Rabah quickly turning away in pain and falling to his knees. Referee Olivier Coste called for time as Rabah indicated an eye injury, and senior ONE Championship doctor Warren Wang examined him at ringside. While slow-motion replays played on the arena screens, Thai fans began chanting 'elbow!' in protest – with some booing as the fight was officially called off. 'I agree – I think it was a knockdown by elbow because it's my own elbow, so I know what I was doing,' Shadow said. Rabah, who fights out of Venum Training Camp in Phuket under Mehdi Zatout, was taken to hospital in Bangkok and later returned to the fighters' hotel with his eye heavily bandaged. He told the Bangkok Post he was 'OK' and recovering. But the moment left Shadow rueing what could have been. 'Yes, looking at his condition, I thought I was going to finish the fight quite well,' he said. 'So I am actually very upset I didn't get the chance to do that – and also missed out on the bonus.' The result was officially ruled a No Contest due to an 'unintentional foul', as confirmed by ring announcer Dom Lau. Some fans on social media accused Shadow of an eye poke, though the replay footage remained inconclusive. 'I can't say for sure, but if you ask me – I'm pretty sure it was the elbow,' Shadow said. The Mueang Tak native said he would welcome a rematch if Rabah wants one – but also named another potential rival. 'I would say it's more likely Nico Carrillo is interested in me,' he said, smiling, when asked if he would like to fight the Scot. 'We met and he was saying, 'If there's a chance, I would love to fight you.'' Despite the anticlimactic ending, the former Rajadamnern Stadium champion and ONE Friday Fights standout remained upbeat about his main roster debut. 'Of course, I was very excited for this event – and this was my first time in my life fighting during the morning,' he said.
