The Tech Solving Infrastructure's Crisis: Construction Firms 'Build With Intelligence Built-In'

The first train of Line 15, part of the Grand Paris Express project, is pictured within its first ... More driving test at the railway station of Champigny-sur-Marne, a Paris' suburb. (Photo by Ludovic MARIN / AFP) (Photo by LUDOVIC MARIN/AFP via Getty Images) Construction megaprojects have a 91.5% failure rate—finishing late, over budget, or both. But a software breakthrough is changing this. It combines two existing technologies to create something new. Consider the $41 billion Grand Paris Express subway expansion. One hundred feet below the streets of Paris, thousands of workers are building something massive. It will add four new lines to the city's legendary Metro system. It's 124 miles of new tunnels and 68 new stations. It's Europe's largest infrastructure project, the equivalent of adding the entirety of Washington, DC's existing subway system. The scale is staggering. In one recent week, 10,000 people were working. They had 50 miles of track and 25 stations under construction at the same time. Projects this big usually fail. Less than 1% of big projects finish on time, on budget, and as planned. But the Grand Paris Express project is different. They're using a breakthrough that's transforming how major construction and infrastructure get built. The breakthrough combines two existing technologies. GIS (geographic information systems) maps the real world. BIM (building information modeling) shows construction details. Separately, these tools are useful. Together, they're revolutionary. The fusion is not just a new tool, but a whole new way of designing and building things. It creates something construction has never had: context and detail at the same time. Teams can see everything about where a project sits in the real world. They also see every detail about the project itself, down to individual wires and water connections. For the Paris Metro, this means total visibility. Designers see every existing utility as they plan new rail lines. They know what cables can stay, what pipes must move. Construction teams can sequence work stages, plan material deliveries, and schedule the right workers. The system also enhances 'clash detection.' It spots where concrete pouring, electrical installation, and track construction will conflict with the built or natural world — or with each other. Then it suggests solutions before problems happen. Everyone involved in the Grand Paris Express project sees the same information. Interior designers, city officials, lighting installers, problem-solving engineers, and community members all work from identical Construction and Infrastructure Need ThisBy many measures, the construction industry is in crisis. Rework alone—correcting things that have simply been done wrong—accounts for 12% of the cost of projects, on average. A root cause? Communication and collaboration. Design changes get misunderstood. Field problems don't get explained clearly to the office. Architects, engineers, and construction managers work in silos. It's frustrating to manage projects that get tangled in design disputes and construction delays. It's frustrating to be the people trying to get those projects built on the ground. And it is doubly or triply frustrating to be the client: the person, or company, or city waiting for the tunnel to be finished or the office building to be ready, with the bill growing as unmet deadlines pass. The combined GIS + BIM system helps tackle this. It creates 'data continuity'—everyone using the same information about every element. It builds a digital bridge between field and office, between builders and designers and their clients. It speeds decisions while also giving everyone more confidence in those decisions. It's designed to let architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms fulfill their promises. Thomas Lesage, digital transformation officer for the French firm, Egis, managing the construction of the Grand Paris Express, calls using the system 'a pleasure.'Building with IntelligenceOther projects see similar results. Peru used it to rebuild flood damage across an area four times the size of New York City. Until the convergence of GIS and BIM, no software system could handle the data and users for such a dispersed effort, with so many contractors and so many stakeholders across such a wide geography. Engineer David Castillo called the system built using GIS + BIM the project's 'greatest achievement.' It's the flexibility and adaptability that makes unifying GIS and BIM so valuable. It shows the reality, the plan, and it can model the future—or several different possible futures, depending on everything from climate to funding. San Francisco International Airport used it to rebuild Terminal 1 during the pandemic. They don't call it a 'digital twin'—they call it a 'dynamic twin' because it adapts in real time. This transformation in construction matters all the more because construction has a massive impact on the world. Buildings create 42% of global carbon emissions. Globally, we're constructing the equivalent of the building space in New York City every month—and will continue to do so for 40 years. A dozen New York Cities of new construction a year. We can't afford the current 91.5% failure rate. Every delayed project wastes resources. Every cost overrun cuts profits. Every mistake creates more emissions. The world needs smart construction. Projects that work the first time. That take into consideration the place they're being built. That meet both economic and environmental needs. Buildings designed for both today and 40 years from now. The GIS + BIM fusion doesn't just make better projects. It makes better processes and better places. It helps people work together faster and more naturally. The technology combines trusted tools companies already use. Early adopters say it transforms company culture, not just project outcomes. As one AEC management veteran said: 'We are nullifying the frustration.' For an industry swimming in frustration, that's more about how the AEC industry is leading the way forward to solve today's biggest infrastructure challenges using GIS technology.

5 Top Tech Stocks to Buy Right Now

Nvidia and AMD look to be big AI infrastructure beneficiaries. Meta and Pinterest are using AI to improve user engagement and their ad campaigns. Alphabet's collection of strong businesses should not be overlooked. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Technology stocks have helped lead the market higher over the past several years, and with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), they look poised to continue to lead the way. Let's look at five top tech stocks catching the AI tailwinds that you might want to consider buying right now. When it comes to AI infrastructure, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has been the clear-cut winner. Its graphics processing units (GPUs) are being used to power the massive AI data center build-out, and its growth is showing no signs of slowing down. Last quarter, the chipmaker grew its revenue by 69% year over year to $44.1 billion, with data center sales soaring 73% to $39.1 billion. That's about a ninefold jump in data center revenue from just two years ago. Nvidia took a huge 92% share in the GPU space in the first quarter. Its wide moat stems from its CUDA software platform. It pushed the software into universities and research labs early on, which made it the platform developers used in order to learn to program GPUs. And it has since built tools and libraries on top of CUDA to help speed up development and improve the performance of its chips. As AI infrastructure spending continues to ramp up, Nvidia is sure to benefit. Another company benefiting from the AI infrastructure build-out is Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD). Last quarter, its revenue jumped 36% year over year, while its data center business grew 57%. While a distant No. 2 to Nvidia in GPUs, the company has established itself as a leader in central processing units (CPUs) for data centers. However, its biggest opportunity is with AI inference. It's less technically demanding than AI model training, which reduces some of CUDA's advantages. This has allowed AMD to carve a niche in inference, a market that is eventually expected to become much larger than the one for training. As the leader in the CPU market and with a big inference opportunity, AMD is in a strong position. It doesn't need to take a huge share away from Nvidia; just small gains in market share will go a long way. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is becoming a digital marketing AI leader. It has created a proprietary AI model called Llama to boost user engagement. At the same time, advertisers are using it to create more effective ad campaigns and to better target users. This is leading to more ad inventory and higher ad prices. In the most recent quarter, Meta's ad impressions rose 5%, while ad prices jumped 10%. Its biggest opportunity, though, is in bringing ads to its newer platforms. It just began serving ads on its popular messaging platform WhatsApp, which has over 3 billion users. It has built out the user base of its newest social media source, Threads, to 350 million monthly users, and is just gradually introducing ads to the platform. Meta's leadership in digital advertising, combined with its AI investments and new platform expansion, sets it up for solid growth in the coming years. Despite some investor concerns over AI's potential to disrupt its search business, Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) remains well-positioned. While search and AI continue to evolve, Google has two big advantages. The first is distribution: Its Android smartphone operating systems, Chrome browser, and Apple revenue-sharing agreement, make it the default search engine on most devices. And it has spent decades building out one of the most far-reaching ad networks in the world, which allows it to serve everything from global brands to local service providers. At the same time, the company has become a cloud computing leader. Last quarter, Google Cloud saw its revenue jump 28%, as customers used its platform to build their own AI models and tools. Investors also shouldn't ignore the company's custom AI chips, called Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Google Cloud is using them internally to improve performance and save costs, but news recently surfaced that OpenAI is renting the chips to help power ChatGPT. The company's robotaxi business, Waymo, also has strong long-term potential. It has seen strong early demand and is now expanding into other U.S. cities. With AI, cloud computing, and robotaxis, Alphabet remains a cutting-edge technology company. Pinterest (NYSE: PINS) has leaned heavily into AI and making its platform more shoppable in recent years. These investments are starting to pay off with user engagement rising and average revenue per user (ARPU) increasing. A partnership with Google, meanwhile, has helped Pinterest better monetize its huge international user base. Now, the company is looking toward its new ad tool, Performance+, to help drive growth. It combines AI and automation to let advertisers quickly create and manage ad campaigns, while automatically handling ad targeting and bidding. With its platform improvements and Performance+, Pinterest could see strong future growth. Canada awaits private sector move on Pacific crude pipeline, minister says

By Amanda Stephenson CALGARY (Reuters) -Canada's federal government has not been presented with any private sector proposal to build a new crude pipeline to the Pacific coast, the country's Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said on Friday. Hodgson said in an interview in Calgary that the government is beginning to have "concrete discussions" with various proponents of projects that could get the go-ahead under new legislation passed by Canada's Senate in late June. The legislation aims to fast-track approval for natural resource and infrastructure projects, part of a campaign promise by Prime Minister Mark Carney to transform Canada's economy in the face of U.S. tariffs. Hodgson declined to provide specifics about the discussions under way, saying the government has done its part to give project proponents the clarity they need to invest. "Now it's up to the private sector to make those decisions," he said. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said in June the province is working to present the federal government with a proponent and route for a potential new crude pipeline from Alberta to the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia. Smith said the pipeline would be built in tandem with the Pathways Alliance carbon capture and storage project. Canada is trying to diversify oil exports to be less reliant on the United States, but has struggled to find private companies willing to build a pipeline. Hodgson confirmed Friday that if there is to be a pipeline to tidewater, it must be built together with the Pathways project, which has been proposed by a consortium of oil sands companies to reduce emissions from Canada's energy sector and which could cost between C$10 and C$20 billion to construct. In recent years, major Canadian oil pipelines have faced years of regulatory delay and legal challenges, leading to cancellations for some projects and spiraling costs for others, like the Trans Mountain expansion. Canada's largest pipeline company, Enbridge, said in an emailed statement last week it would need to see significant provincial and federal legislative change — including changes to the country's industrial carbon policy — before considering proposing a new pipeline. Hodgson declined to say whether the government would consider changing or eliminating some of its existing environmental and regulatory policies in order to encourage a pipeline proposal.
