Pakistani superstars Mahira Khan, Humayun Saeed honored in UAE amid ‘Love Guru' promotions
Khan and Saeed have recently toured the US, UK and Canada for red carpet events, fan meet-and-greets and exclusive press interviews to promote Love Guru, which will hit cinemas during the Eid Al-Adha holiday next month.
'During the ceremony, Ambassador Tirmizi presented commemorative shields to the artists, celebrating their dedication and achievements,' the Pakistan Embassy in the UAE said in a statement.
'In his remarks, the ambassador highlighted Pakistan's rich cultural and artistic diversity, underscoring the vital role of the creative industry as a form of soft power in shaping global perception of Pakistan.'
Love Guru made history last week when its trailer was showcased at New York City's Times Square, the first time a Pakistani film has ever been featured on the landmark's giant digital screens. The trailer launch attracted a crowd of onlookers, fans, and members of the South Asian diaspora who gathered to watch the film's stars unveil the preview in person.
In the upcoming film, Saeed plays the character of a flirt pretending to be a relationship expert who is striving to win over Khan, who is playing an architect.

PM directs provinces to cooperate with center to implement ‘cashless' system in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed provincial governments on Monday to fully cooperate with the center to move the country toward a 'cashless' system, a statement from his office said as Islamabad attempts to digitize its economy for greater transparency. Pakistan is a cash-dominated market where a significant portion of transactions, particularly in the informal sector, are conducted using cash. The country's central bank has taken steps in recent months to ensure a transition toward a more cashless economy so that financial transactions are more traceable, reducing chances of tax evasion and corruption. Pakistan's digital payments have also been on the rise. Since its 2021 launch, the central bank's Raast system has processed over 892 million transactions worth Rs20 trillion ($72 billion). Sharif held a weekly review meeting on Pakistan's cashless economy and digitization efforts on Monday, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement. 'The federal government should hold meaningful consultations with the provincial governments for effective and comprehensive implementation of the digitization transformation plan,' the PMO quoted Sharif as saying following a review meeting on cashless and digital economy. 'He further directed that all provincial governments, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, should fully cooperate with the federal government in digitizing the economy and moving toward a cashless system.' The premier said that with coordination from provinces, the federal government's digitization transformation plan should be made more efficient so that its goals are achieved within the stipulated time. During the meeting, Sharif highlighted that digitizing the economy will enhance transparency and offer greater convenience to the public without incurring additional costs. 'The government is encouraging digital payments and digital transfer of funds through policy measures,' the PMO quoted him as saying. Pakistan launched the Merchant Onboarding Framework last week that requires banks and payment providers to equip all merchants with Raast-enabled digital payment tools such as QR codes and POS [Point of Sale] systems. Earlier in July, Sharif ordered the doubling of all key digital economy targets including mobile-based payments, QR code adoption and overall transaction volumes as part of the same plan. The government in May also approved setting up the Pakistan Digital Assets Authority to regulate blockchain-based financial infrastructure. Pakistan, a country of over 240 million people, has a vast informal economy and low tax compliance. The government has long identified digitization as a key tool to improve governance, reduce corruption and expand the country's narrow tax base.

Pakistani security forces kill three militants linked to 2024 attack on Chinese in Karachi
Pakistani security forces in an overnight raid killed three suspected militants accused of orchestrating last year's attack in which two Chinese nationals working in a textile mill in the southern port city of Karachi were wounded, officials said on Monday. Azad Khan, a senior official with the Counter-Terrorism Department, said the dead insurgents included the alleged mastermind of the November 2024 attack. He identified that person only as Zafran and said he was from the Pakistani Taliban, who are known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP and are allies of the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. China has repeatedly pressed Pakistan to improve security for its nationals working on major infrastructure projects under Beijing's multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative, which include roads, railways and power plants. Chinese nationals have increasingly come under attack by militant groups, including TTP and the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army — banned by the Pakistani authorities and also designated as terrorist groups by the United States. Pakistan has pledged to bolster security measures for Chinese workers, including those employed at private factories. Meanwhile, at least seven people were killed the previous day in Tirah Valley, a district in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Fiaz Khan, a local government official, said. He said the violence erupted when hundreds of residents gathered outside a military camp to demand protection and justice after a child was killed in a mortar attack on the weekend. The crowd came under gunfire from 'unknown gunmen,' Khan said. He said the demonstrators accused security forces of opening fire when some people were throwing stones at the military camp, but police had yet to determine whose bullets caused the deaths. Khan said gunfire was also reported from nearby hills, and police suspect TTP may have been behind the shooting to sow discord between residents and the military. The government has ordered a probe into the killings of demonstrators, he said.

Indian army says three men killed after firefight in Indian Kashmir
NEW DELHI: The Indian army said on Monday that it had killed three men after an intense firefight in Indian Kashmir, according to a post by the army on X. The men are suspected to be behind the April 22 attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir that sparked a deadly military conflict with neighbour Pakistan, two Indian TV news channels said. Reuters could not immediately verify the involvement of the men in the attack.
