AI deepfakes of PM, tycoons used in scams
These videos are used to lure unsuspecting people into fraudulent investment schemes.
MCA's Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said today that RM2.11 billion was lost to these scams last year. A total of 13,956 cases were reported.
These AI-generated deepfake videos often depict influential figures — including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok, former chief justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Capital A Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes — promoting fake investment and get-rich-quick schemes.
"The AI-generated videos look so real that people can't tell the difference. Anyone watching would think it is the prime minister himself asking the public to invest, unaware that it's an AI-generated fake." Chong said this at Wisma MCA.
He said 85 per cent of victims were convinced to invest after watching fake promotional videos featuring seemingly genuine endorsements from public figures.
"If not for the Tamil accent in one of the videos, I too might have believed it was real," he said.
This, he added, highlights just how convincing the content can be.
"These videos have become rampant over the past four to five months, spreading through Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram — making them easily accessible."
He said that while authorities such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission are removing flagged content, scammers continue to stay one step ahead.
"They're smarter. The moment one video is taken down, they generate a new one and continue to deceive people."
To illustrate how easily victims are ensnared, he and several MCA members conducted a simple sting operation.
They pooled RM1,100 and responded to a link beneath one of the scam videos.
"Within minutes, a scammer contacted our team member to explain the 'investment' and its returns.
"He played along and invested RM1,100. He was promised a return of RM5,000 the following week.
'The next day, they demanded another US$250 as a processing fee. At that point, we confirmed it was a scam and stopped engaging."
While it is difficult to prevent scammers from using technology in increasingly creative ways, he said public awareness remains the strongest defence.
"We must flag and tag such videos as fake whenever they appear on our feed.
"This way, the next person who sees it might think twice before falling for the scam."
He said social media platforms should strengthen detection mechanisms and called on authorities to tighten legislation against the misuse of AI-generated media.

Shamsul Azri: ECRL project reaches 85pct progress
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) has been instructed to closely monitor the implementation of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which has now reached 85 per cent completion. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar conveyed this directive during the 32nd MRL Board of Directors meeting, held in conjunction with its retreat in Melaka which began yesterday. He said MRL was also tasked with ensuring that there are no disruptions, such as rail encroachments by irresponsible parties, as such incidents could affect the project's timeline and delay the targeted commencement of operations in early 2027. "I am confident that the ECRL project will become a landmark of national pride and a catalyst for economic revitalisation along its alignment and surrounding areas, directly benefiting the people and the nation. "This is in line with the 'Kesejahteraan' (prosperity) pillar under the Madani principle, which can only be realised through a whole-of-government and whole-of-nation approach, involving synergy between the federal and state governments as well as the private sector," he said in a Facebook post today. In a separate post, Shamsul Azri said the MRL retreat was vital in determining the strategic direction and operational targets of the ECRL service. "Various initiatives are being planned by MRL in collaboration with multiple stakeholders to ensure an efficient rail operating ecosystem, as well as to provide job opportunities for local youths. "In addition, this project will create avenues for business activity, stimulate economic growth, and improve connectivity between the West and East Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia," he said.

PM to deliver keynote address at BRICS Business Forum
RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will deliver the keynote address at the BRICS Business Forum, held in conjunction with the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, today at 9am (8pm Malaysian time). Anwar, who has just arrived in Rio de Janeiro, will be joined by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who also serves as president of the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry, in delivering the keynote. Malaysia is participating in the summit as a BRICS partner country and as the incoming chair of Asean for 2025. The country officially became a BRICS partner on Jan 1 this year. During his visit to Rio de Janeiro, Anwar, who is also finance minister, is scheduled to hold a business meeting with Brazilian multinational aerospace company Embraer. The Prime Minister is accompanied by Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Energy Transition and Water Transformation Deputy Minister, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir; and senior government and corporate officials. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil is projected to rise by 14.6 per cent to RM20.35 billion in 2024, up from RM17.43 billion in 2023, maintaining Brazil's position as one of Malaysia's top trading partners in Latin America.
