FM Nirmala Sitharaman reviews banking sector's operational and cybersecurity preparedness amid rising tensions with Pakistan

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday chaired a high level meeting with the Managing Directors and CEOs of Public and Private Sector Banks and insurance companies amidst emerging security concerns arising from tensions at the border to review baking sector's operational and cyber security preparedness, including digital applications such as net banking and UPI, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.In the meeting, Sitharaman asked directed all banks to remain fully alert and be prepared to deal with in case with an eventuality or crisis, ensuring uninterrupted banking services.She also directed banks to conduct regular audits of their cybersecurity systems and data centres and ensure that all digital and core banking infrastructure is fully firewalled and monitored round the clock to prevent breaches or any hostile cyber activity.The Finance Minister instructed banks to designate two dedicated senior officials identified at the headquarters, one for reporting all cyber-related matters and the other to ensure operational matters, including the functioning of bank branches and the availability of cash in ATMs. Both dedicated officers should report any incident to CERT-In / relevant agencies and DFS on a real-time basis.In this regard, banks were also asked to coordinate in real time with the Reserve Bank of India , CERT-In and relevant Government agencies to ensure robust and agile information exchange and response.Further, the Finance Minister also asked the banks to ensure the safety of employees and their families working at branches in border areas.She also ordered insurance companies to give timely settlements along with uninterrupted services.The Managing Directors and CEOs of all the banks and insurance companies apprised the Union Finance Minister about the measures they are undertaking, given the ongoing tensions at the border.Bank MDs & CEOs informed that cybersecurity measures have been reinforced throughout the banking system. Anti-DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) systems have been implemented by banks to protect against massive cyber-attacks. To guarantee institutional readiness, mock drills have been held encompassing cybersecurity and disaster recovery scenarios at the highest levels. They apprised that phishing attempts are being actively watched, and staff members have received several internal alerts to increase awareness.Bank officials stated that their Security Operations Centre (SOC) and Network Operations Centres are fully operational and on high alert. These centres are coordinating closely with CERT-In and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), facilitating real-time data sharing and threat monitoring.

A notice to a farmer in Dinhata in Cooch Behar district from Assam's Foreigners Tribunal, declaring the 50-year-old an 'illegal migrant' has ignited a fierce political slugfest in West Bengal. Uttam Kumar, a resident of Sadyaler Kuthi in Dinhata subdivision, said he was stunned when he received the notice in January, accusing him of entering India 'illegally through Assam between 1966 and 1971.' 'I have never left Cooch Behar in my life. I was born and raised here. How can I be an illegal migrant? ' he told mediapersons, recalling that he only grasped the charge's seriousness after neighbours explained the tribunal's ruling. 'I was served the notice in January. I don't read things well, so I showed it to my neighbours. That is when I learnt Assam has charged me with being an illegal infiltrator,' he said. The notice alleges Kumar failed to submit required documents during police verification and now stands classified as a suspected illegal immigrant. Foreigners' Tribunals in Assam alone adjudicate such citizenship disputes. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) was quick to denounce the development as proof of the BJP's 'anti-Bengali' bias. Assam is ruled by the BJP. Calling the notice 'outrageous', TMC leader and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha said: 'All residents of the Brahmaputra basin, who migrated before 1971, are Indian citizens as per the Assam Accord. Even if we assume someone entered before 1971, they are legitimate Indians. Uttam is a Rajbanshi, a son of this soil. The BJP is trying to repeat Assam's NRC chaos here.' On social media platform X, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of first deporting Bengali-speaking workers and now targeting lifelong residents. 'Despite documents showing his father's name on the 1966 electoral roll, Uttam is being hounded. But our leader Mamata Banerjee will fight this in court and on the streets,' he wrote. The BJP, however, rejected the accusations and instead blamed the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government for the confusion over identity documentation. A party spokesperson described it as 'one or two stray cases' and insisted that the state administration must answer for blurred lines between real citizens and those using forged documents. 'We hold the Mamata Banerjee government accountable for the situation. The lines between real citizens and those using forged documents have become increasingly blurred,' he said. Thousands of infiltrators, the BJP leader alleged, have created fake papers to pose as Bengal residents. Sushil Chandra Barman, BJP MLA from Mathabhanga, also questioned the state administration's role. 'This is another baseless campaign of TMC. There is no truth in it. PM Modi meets Uruguay Prez on sidelines of 17th BRICS Summit
Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 7 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on Monday with Uruguay President Yamandu Orsi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and discussed the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders held discussions covering the full spectrum of bilateral relations. 'They reviewed cooperation in the areas of digital collaboration, ICT, Digital Public Infrastructure and UPI, defence, railways, health and pharmaceuticals, agriculture, energy, culture and people-to-people linkages,' the MEA said in a statement. 'A key area of discussion was strengthening bilateral trade and investment. Both sides expressed interest in the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement, aiming to unlock greater economic potential and trade complementarities,' it added. Prime Minister expressed gratitude to President Orsi for the strong condemnation of the recent barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam and appreciated Uruguay's solidarity with India in the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to develop a forward-looking bilateral partnership. Sharing the pictures of the bilateral meet, PM Modi wrote, 'Happy to have met President Yamandu Orsi of Uruguay on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Brazil. Close ties between our nations are important for the Global South.' 'India is committed to doing everything possible to further deepen relations with Uruguay. While addressing the session on Environment, COP 30, Global Health, PM Modi said India would redefine the BRICS grouping under its upcoming chairmanship by focusing on 'Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.' Addressing the BRICS Summit in Brazil, PM Modi said, 'Under India's BRICS Chairmanship, we will define BRICS in a new form. BRICS would mean 'Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability'.' He affirmed that New Delhi would carry forward the spirit of people-centric progress during its leadership of the bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.' In the coming year, under India's BRICS Chairmanship, we will continue close cooperation on all subjects,' the Prime Minister said. Modi underlined how India's presidency of the G20 elevated the concerns of the developing world and promised a similar approach for BRICS. During the summit, the leaders held productive discussions on various issues on the BRICS agenda, including reform of global governance, enhancing the voice of the global south, peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, development issues, and Artificial Intelligence.
