UDON (63A: Kijoyu ___ (noodle dish)) UDON is a thick noodle that is used in a number of dishes in Japanese cuisine. Kijoyu UDON refers to UDON noodles served as a cold soup in a soy sauce and citrus broth. Thanks to the "noodle dish" hint, I was able to figure out this answer even though I wasn't previously familiar with kijoyu UDON.
PICASSO (43D: Jewelry designer Paloma) Since 1980, French jewelry designer Paloma PICASSO has collaborated with Tiffany & Co., to create innovative, bold jewelry pieces. Paloma PICASSO is the daughter of painters Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973) and Françoise Gilot (1921-2023). In learning about Paloma PICASSO, I came across a quote of hers I really like, "Being strong also means not being afraid to change your mind, evolve, and periodically reinvent the way you do things."
WALT (1A: "To You" poet Whitman) Although the poetry of WALT Whitman (1819-1892) was considered controversial in his time (too sensual!), he's now considered one of the most influential American poets. His Leaves of Grass poetry collection was first published in 1855, though several revised and expanded versions were later released. WALT Whitman's poem, "To You," which can be read on the Academy of American Poets website, begins, "Whoever you are, I fear you are walking the walks of dreams."
MAROON (12A: "And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was ___") and TAY (54A: Swift, to Swifties) Taylor Swift – TAY to Swifties – released the song "MAROON" in 2022. The song is included on her Midnights album, and contains the line, "And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was MAROON."
TEA (14A: Earl Grey or Sleepytime) Earl Grey TEA is a blend of tea to which bergamot oil has been added, giving it a unique scent and taste. Sleepytime is a variety of Celestial Seasonings TEA, and has been marketed by the company since 1972. In 1973, Beth the company introduced Sleepytime Bear as a mascot of Sleepytime TEA.
ANYA (18A: "The Menu" star Taylor-Joy) The Menu is a 2022 movie about a celebrity chef hosting a dinner at his exclusive restaurant on a private island. The Menu is a horror movie, and things take a morbid turn as the dinner progresses. ANYA Taylor-Joy plays the role of Margot, one of the dinner guests.
SINEW (39A: Muscle-bone connection) The connective tissue that connects muscles to bone is known as a tendon or SINEW. In contrast, the connective tissue that connects bone to other bones is a ligament.
EAR (42A: Corn serving) I live in IOWA, the state that produces the most corn. In the summer, EARs of corn are prevalent around here. This clue/answer pair reminds me of a musical my husband and I saw recently. Shucked is a musical about corn; yes, you read that right, the musical is about corn. We didn't know much about Shucked before seeing it, other than that it was about corn. We enjoyed it so much. We laughed a ton at all of its corny humor. I recommend seeing it if you ever get the opportunity.
THE LUCKIEST (49A: Ben Folds song with the lyric "Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls brought me here") From 1993-2000 and 2011-2013, Ben Folds was the frontman of the alt rock trio, Ben Folds Five. He's also recorded a number of solo albums. His debut solo album, Rockin' the Suburbs, includes the song "THE LUCKIEST."
MAIN (53A: Disneyland's ___ Street, U.S.A.) MAIN Street, U.S.A. is one of the themed areas at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. MAIN Street is designed to resemble a typical Midwest town in the early 20th century, and was inspired by Walt Disney's hometown, Marceline, Missouri. MAIN Street, USA has a town square, shops, a train station, and a firehouse. Walt Disney had a personal apartment on the second floor of the firehouse where he would stay when he visited the park. (The apartment is still there, but is not open to the public.) Sleeping Beauty Castle is at the far end of MAIN Street, U.S.A.
CERA (61A: "Barbie" actor Michael) In the 2023 movie, Barbie, Michael CERA portrays Allan. Allan is the only male resident of Barbieland that is not named Ken.
ARABIC (2D: Language from which "alchemy" is derived) In addition to "alchemy," the words "algebra," "algorithm," and "alcohol" are also derived from ARABIC.
SHAPES (8D: Hearts, e.g.) This straight forward clue proved to be a little tricky for me. Hearts can refer to multiple things – organs, emojis, symbols, playing cards, etc. – that I needed a couple of letters from crossing answers before I realized that hearts are, of course, SHAPES.
MYA (31D: 2001 "Lady Marmalade" singer) The song "Lady Marmalade" was a hit for Labelle in the 1970s. In 2001, Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, MÝA, and Pink recorded a version of "Lady Marmalade" for the Moulin Rouge! movie's soundtrack.
IDLI (40D: Savory rice cake) IDLI is a savory rice cake that originated in South India.
STAN (45D: Name found in "fast and loose") I'm a fan of the occasional hidden name clue.
ENOLA (50D: Netflix's "___ Holmes") Netflix's ENOLA Holmes movies are based on Nancy Springer's book series, The ENOLA Holmes Mysteries. The books and movies borrow characters and settings from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books about Sherlock Holmes, adding a new character, a sister twenty years younger than Sherlock. Millie Bobby Brown portrays ENOLA Holmes in the movies. There are currently two ENOLA Holmes movies, but I'm happy to say that filming on a third movie is scheduled to begin in April. I look forward to another installment in this delightful series.
SOL (59D: Sun, in Spanish) I appreciate getting a review of Spanish vocabulary. In Spanish, SOL is sun, and luna is moon.
A few other clues I especially enjoyed:
CLOWN NOSES (56A: Some circus performers' red accessories)
SIGH (64A: "Best weekend ever" sound)
CUTEST (47D: "Why are you the ___ thing ever?")
INEVITABLE (Freestyle): There's no theme today, as this is a freestyle, or themeless, puzzle. The title is a nod to THE LUCKIEST (49A: Ben Folds song with the lyric "Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls brought me here").
In addition to the answers I highlighted above, I enjoyed the one-sided conversation that seems to be happening in the upper part of the puzzle. It starts off with "I HAVE TO ASK..." (16A: "Tell me if it's none of my business, but..."). Wait, "HEAR ME OUT" (24A: "Just listen before you say anything"). Or "BETTER YET" (36A: "Here's an option you might like more"). Thank you, Amie, for this delightful puzzle.

Is Tia Mowry a Single Mom? The Divorced Parent Responds to Backlash Over the Term
Recently, Tia Mowry typed a note to herself on her phone that read: 'Why do I get backlash for calling myself a single mom?' Mowry shared a screenshot of message in a candid Instagram carousel addressing the criticism she's received for using the term since splitting from her husband of 14 years, actor Cory Hardrict in 2022. The former couple share son, Cree, 14, and daughter, Cairo, 7. In her post, Mowry explained that being a solo parent, in her definition, doesn't mean 'doing it all alone without the father present in their kids' lives at all.' 'For me, in my household, I am SINGLE,' the 'Sister, Sister,' alum wrote. 'So I'm holding it down for everyone at home. I'm the only parent present day to day.' Reactions to Mowry's take were mixed, with some supporting her perspective and others arguing that the phrase should be reserved for women raising children entirely on their own. 'I'm a single woman, who co-parents. I reserve the term 'single mom' for someone who is without assistance,' one person commented. 'Single mom has generally meant a woman raising kids without a partner.' 'Validating!' 'If you file taxes as single, then you are a single parent — period' 'I think it's better to say you're a single woman, co-parenting." 'You are a single woman!!!!!' 'You are in fact, a single mom. Full stop.' 'A single mom is a woman who is raising her children in a single parent household. Just because she co parents doesn't make her any less of a single mom.' Stacie Martin, founder of Single Parent Advocate, highlights that experiences of single parenting can vary greatly. She shares that her ex was never involved in their children's lives. While acknowledging that parents with absent co-parents face different challenges than someone like Mowry, Martin emphasizes the importance of respecting each person's unique situation. 'Parenting for you might be hard because of a different set of factors than it was for me,' Martin tells 'But that doesn't make you any less of a single mom. We all face time contrasts and challenges when balancing our duties as single parents.' That's exactly the point Mowry was trying to make. 'What I want you to take from this: Being a single mom isn't one way or one story,' she concluded. 'There are so many nuances.' This article was originally published on Solve the daily Crossword

Savannah's Death & Co. Bar Is the New Spot to See and Be Seen
When Municipal Grand swung its doors on July 11, the hotel's eponymous lobby bar quickly packed with patrons thirsty for a taste of its much-anticipated beverage program — and the people it attracts. The debut came within two years after Midnight Auteur, a new hospitality group from the founders of Death & Co. and Denver's the Ramble Hotel, announced plans to reimagine the six-story, 1960s landmark into a cocktail-driven, 44-room destination. Municipal Grand's name is a clever nod to the past: the First Federal Savings and Loan Association, which operated from 1961 to 1989, later served as a City of Savannah workplace at 45 Abercorn Street. The preserved architecture, from terrazzo tiles to the bank vault, sets the tone for the midcentury modern-inspired interiors by AAmp Studio — the same firm behind Death & Co.'s bars in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. — in collaboration with Savannah-based Lynch Associates Architects and Ward Architecture + Preservation. Drink martinis or 'cheekies' at the bar. Kelly Calvillo By design, Municipal Bar is the city's best new spot to see and be seen, both in person and on Instagram. Anchoring the lobby is a curved, 14-seat bar surrounded by serpentine banquettes and low lounge seating. Although at street level, the entire floor feels like one big sunken conversation pit, thanks to an upper mezzanine level encasing the perimeter. The Municipal Bar's menu of shareable drinks and small plates further leans into its sociability. A 'Family Style' list of playful offerings encourages guests to start with banana daiquiri 'cheekies' — miniature renditions made with Wray & Nephew rum and served in port glasses for $8 per person. Or, patrons can 'Keep It Going' with espresso martini cheekies at $6 a pop. For a fancier pour, the $36 'Proper Martini Service' for two — inspired by London's Dukes bar — is served ice-cold with a choose-your-own-adventure selection of accouterments, plus the option to add a side of salty shoestring fries for an additional $5. Of course, there's also a full selection of regular-sized beverages, such as the neon-hued white Negroni (Terroir gin, Americano, and Gentian amaro), garnished with a juicy pineapple wedge. With a subtropical climate in mind, rum or mezcal concoctions — complete with crushed ice, crystal-clear rocks or frosted glassware — are heavenly for cooling off in Savannah's thick humidity. Ranging from $16 to $19, these are contemporary riffs on classics, expected given the Death & Co. association. The hotel also offers creative fare for brunch and dinner. Kelly Calvillo For the uninitiated, Death & Co. first opened by David Kaplan and Ravi DeRossi in the mid-aughts as an unassuming bar in Manhattan's East Village. The brand would become one of the world's most sought-after cocktail bars, with four locations in New York, Denver, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. With insatiable demand (parties still often wait hours to enter the flagship) came the spin-off concepts: in 2018, Kaplan launched the full-scale hospitality firm Gin & Luck with several partners, including Alex Day, who serves as chief operating officer. This branch is responsible for recent projects like Close Company in Las Vegas, Nashville, and soon, Atlanta. The expansion is fueled in part by investor funding through SeedInvest, an online equity crowdfunding platform. As the Death & Co. institution appears closer to cementing its status as a household name, some may wonder if this dilutes the brand's popularity or prestige. On the contrary, Midnight Auteur operates as a distinct entity—more of a cousin than a sibling. Joining Kaplan and Day in this venture is Ryan Diggins, the founder and operator of the Ramble Hotel in Denver, Colorado, where the second Death & Co. opened in 2018. The midcentury modern-inspired interiors are by AAmp Studio. Kelly Calvillo With this ownership team based across the country, they brought in Franck Savoy to lead Municipal Grand as general manager. The son of chef Guy Savoy, of Michelin-starred restaurants in France and Las Vegas, launched his career in fine dining alongside his father before moving on to roles at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, California, Auberge Resorts, and most recently, Berg Hospitality Group in Houston, Texas. Joining Savoy is a mix of talent recruited to relocate to Savannah, like Death & Co. veteran Sam Penton as the director of outlets, as well as an all-star lineup of familiar faces from around the city. Helming the kitchen is executive chef Karim Elkady (formerly of Hotel Bardo, Southern Cross Hospitality, and Perry Lane) and executive sous chef Shannon Koprivich (also formerly of Southern Cross Hospitality), with Justin Stevenson (formerly of Husk Savannah) managing the front of house. Behind the bar, locals recognize James Nowicki and Sebastián Montero-Hernández, just to name a couple. Herein lies the true joy of a visit to Municipal Grand — the dynamite combination of the Hostess City's famed hospitality paired with Death & Co.'s gravitas. That, and food to back it all up. In the era of the aesthetic restaurant, when Instagrammability is weighted as highly as the quality of the food and service, Municipal Grand delivers on all three. Brunch at Municipal Grand. Kelly Calvillo Loaded with vibrant herbs and veggies, jewel-toned dishes are as colorful and refreshing as the cocktails and the artful vibe. Lunch standouts like the smoked salmon tartine, crispy chicken sandwich, and a mortadella roll, all served on Flora and Fauna bread. 'There's no club sandwich or Caesar salad. That's intentional,' says Savoy. This fall, the hotel will unveil its basement cocktail den, Hot Eye, decked out in red walls, blackened mirrors, and oxblood leather booths, just in time for the SCAD Savannah Film Festival. For a quieter experience, visit in the morning. The Carolina Gold rice porridge — a combination of currants, coconut, carrot, and pistachio that tastes like a cross between overnight oats and carrot cake — and a 'Fancy Omelet' (complete with a cheese pull) are well worth waking up early for. The Municipal Bar is open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Access to the rooftop Sun Club is currently reserved for hotel guests.

'Today' Show Star Announces Separation From Husband Of 12 Years
Dylan Dreyer, meteorologist for the 'Today' show, has announced that she and her husband of 12 years, Brian Fichera, are separating. 'For many years I have shared my family with you all―the highs and the lows. The ups and downs. And all of the blessings and beautiful memories in between,' Dreyer said in a statement she posted on her Instagram account on Friday. She added that she is 'incredibly grateful for the support and love you've given me throughout it all.' 'For that reason, I want to share with you that a few months ago, Brian and I made the decision to separate,' she said. 'We began as friends, and we will remain the closest of friends.' The two, who were married in 2012, share three children: Calvin, 8; Oliver, 5; and Russell, 3. Dreyer made a point to say the couple 'will continue to co-parent our three wonderful boys together with nothing but love and respect for one another.' 'Thank you as always for your support,' she said, before signing off. Dreyer's message had nearly 90,000 likes by Monday, though the comments on Instagram were turned off. Dreyer has routinely shared insight into her marriage with Fichera, who works as a cameraman and operator for NBC. In a interview in 2023, the meteorologist said that the two bond over golf, and try to talk through the challenges of parenting three small children. 'It's a lot of kid time. It's like, 'Brian, I need to take Oliver to the doctor. I need you to take Calvin to karate. I'll see you at dinner!'' Dreyer said at the time. 'I don't want to say it's had any negative impact on our relationship — we've only gotten stronger.' She also revealed in 2022 that the two mostly communicate through text due to their busy schedules. 'Our schedules mean we don't see each other much, but we text all the time,' Dreyer said, explaining that 'it's even easier to have an important or deep conversation via text because we get all our thoughts out without being interrupted.' 'We don't find it impersonal. In fact, just the opposite,' she said. 'We know each other well enough to understand each other's tone so a lot gets accomplished through texting!'
