Jazeera Airways to restart direct flights to Damascus

Zawya02-06-2025
Kuwaiti low-cost airline Jazeera Airways is all set to resume direct flights to Syrian capital Damascus from Kuwait city.
This comes in response to a strong demand from the large 200,000-strong Syrian expatriate community in Kuwait - one of the largest Middle Eastern communities in the country - as well as increasing interest in re-establishing business, cultural, and familial ties between the two nations, said Jazeera in a statement.
Regional carriers across the GCC have already re-established air links with Syria, and Jazeera will also commence flying once it receives the regulatory clearance.
The Kuwaiti budget carrier had previously operated flights to Damascus, Aleppo, and Deir Ez Zoor, and is now well positioned to restore this vital connectivity.
Announcing this, Chairman Marwan Boodai said: "We are excited to start operating to Syria after a 12-year hiatus. Restoring direct flights to Damascus will provide a critical bridge for thousands of Syrians living and working in Kuwait, while also supporting broader regional efforts to re-engage with Syria."
"In line with the wider momentum across the region, we are completely set up and ready to start flying as soon as we receive the required regulatory approvals," he stated.
Several GCC nations, including Qatar, UAE and others in the Middle East region such as Jordan and Turkey have already resumed or announced their intentions to resume air connectivity with Syria, recognizing the growing need for regional integration and the normalisation of civil aviation ties, he added.
Jazeera Airways said it remains committed to upholding the highest operational and safety standards in line with international aviation protocols.
Upon approval, the airline plans to operate direct daily services to Damascus, with further expansions to other Syrian cities also under consideration, it added.

Dubai's Al Futtaim buys 49.95% stake in Saudi Arabia's Cenomi Retail for over Dh2.44 billion

Al Futtaim group on Sunday said it acquired a 49.95 per cent stake in Saudi franchise retailer Cenomi Retail for more than 2.5 billion riyals (Dh2.44 billion). The Dubai-based conglomerate acquired the stake from Fawaz Abdulaziz Alhokair, Abdul Majeed Abdulaziz Alhokair, Salman Abdulaziz Alhokair, Saudi FAS Holding Company, and FAS Real Estate Company. The shares are priced at SAR 44 (Dh43) each. Under the agreement, Al Futtaim and Cenomi Retail are currently negotiating a shareholder loan agreement. Under this, Al Futtaim will extend a shareholder loan of an amount not less than SAR 1.3 billion, upon completion of the transaction, to help strengthen Cenomi Retail's balance sheet and support its next phase of growth. Al Futtaim group's expansion into Saudi Arabia reflects the strong growth of the retail market in the GCC's largest economy. According to a recent report by Logic Consulting, the GCC retail industry is on track to reach $390 billion (Dh1.43 trillion) by 2028, led by digital transformation, evolving consumer preferences, and strategic government initiatives. Saudi Arabia and the UAE dominate, accounting for over 75 per cent of regional retail sales, a share set to expand further. Al Futtaim, one of the most diversified private groups in the UAE, is operating across 18 countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Asia in key sectors including automotive, financial services, real estate, retail, and health. It has a portfolio of over 200 brands, employing nearly 33,000 people. Cenomi Retail is the only listed business of its type in the Middle East. Its first store opened in 1991; it now trades in 808 stores across 165 shopping malls in 8 countries, with a retail platform covering a total gross leasable area (GLA) of about 332,000 square meters. All of this is managed by a workforce numbering more than 7,000. Cenomi Retail currently represents 47 brands, spanning womenswear, kids' and baby, department stores, shoes and accessories, cosmetics, in addition to operating a series of restaurants and coffee shops. 'This investment represents substantial foreign direct investment from the UAE private sector and underscores the robust economic partnership between our countries. It strengthens our presence and customer reach in Saudi Arabia, a strategic market with solid fundamentals and a clear national vision,' said Omar Al Futtaim, vice chairman and CEO of Al Futtaim. 'We see significant opportunities to support Cenomi Retail in enhancing operations, accelerating digital transformation, and expanding its brand portfolio. This partnership also paves the way for further collaborations in the dynamic Saudi market,' he said. Salim Fakhouri, CEO at Cenomi Retail, said this deal will firmly place Cenomi Retail 'on the right strategic path towards our next phase of growth, focused on scalable, high-performing global brands that drive long-term value to our shareholders.' The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals.

Kuwait: As part of its summer campaign for riders and broader commitment to their wellbeing, talabat, the region's leading on-demand online ordering and delivery platform, has relaunched its 'Vending Machines for Summer Relief' initiative for the second consecutive year. With temperatures on the rise, an exclusive vending machine has been installed in a high-traffic rider zone, offering talabat riders access to essential hydration and light snacks to help them stay safe, nourished, and energized on the job. This initiative reflects talabat's continued efforts to provide on-the-ground, people-first solutions that support rider health and safety all year long, especially during summer. Commenting on the initiative, Bader Al-Ghanim, Vice President and Managing Director of talabat Kuwait, said: 'After receiving positive feedback from riders last year, we're excited to reintroduce this initiative for the second year in a row as part of our summer campaign for the riders. It's designed to support their health, comfort, and efficiency. We've strategically placed a vending machine that provides riders with quick and easy access to water, refreshments, and snacks — all free of cost — to help them stay hydrated and well-nourished during their working hours." To further strengthen its rider support initiatives, the company continues to invest in rider safety and education, offering regular multilingual workshops and training sessions in collaboration with government bodies and leading institutions in Kuwait. These sessions cover key topics including traffic regulations, vehicle safety, and health tips to help riders manage blood pressure and sugar levels during their shifts. By equipping riders with this knowledge, talabat aims to ensure they adopt healthy coping approaches to the job requirements. Building on the success of last year's rollout, talabat remains committed to enhancing its summer campaign for riders and other rider-focused efforts that reflect its long-term corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy. With initiatives like these, talabat continues to set a benchmark for how companies can support those at the heart of the on-demand delivery ecosystem through inclusive, human-centered programs that prioritize health, safety, and wellbeing in this fast-paced line of work.

The investment-grade credit rating of the issuance, including a Baa3 rating from Moody's, further enhanced its appeal—driving strong interest from international private banking platforms and global asset managers. Morgan, HSBC, Standard Chartered, First Abu Dhabi Bank, Emirates NBD, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, KAMCO Investment Company, and National Bank of Kuwait.
