Historic Social Agreement at Maroc Telecom Brings Wage Hikes, New Benefits

Morocco World06-06-2025
Doha – The National Telecommunications Union (SNT), affiliated with the Democratic Federation of Labor (FDT), has secured a substantial social agreement with Maroc Telecom management that improves working conditions and benefits for employees and retirees.
This agreement marks a positive transformation within the company since Mohammed Benchaaboun took over as head of its collective management in March, ending Abdeslam Ahizoune's 27-year tenure that was marked by criticism for anti-competitive practices and labor disputes.
The announcement followed a meeting between the union's Secretary General, Hamid Kejji, and the company's Human Resources Director on Friday. This discussion continued the social dialogue initiated during previous talks in April with Benchaaboun.
Under the new agreement, employees will receive a general 5% wage increase with a minimum of MAD 500 ($50) monthly beginning in June.
The education grant for employees' children rises by 50%, while the number of higher education scholarships for outstanding children of employees doubles to 20 annually.
The company will reduce prices at its summer camps and vacation centers by 50%, with a minimum reduction of MAD 150 ($15).
Maroc Telecom's contribution to private vacation center access has increased by 30%, reaching 130%, and now extends beyond summer months. Workers will also enjoy preferential rates at private sector vacation facilities outside peak season.
The agreement extends health transport (ambulance) services to include retirees and establishes communication channels with retirees through a mobile application and a dedicated email address.
Additionally, the budget for incentives has been increased for employees participating in sales operations, service expansion, and network connections.
This agreement stands in stark contrast to previous management approaches. Labor representatives had previously criticized management practices within the company, pointing out long-standing issues where employees worked for 20 to 30 years without promotional opportunities.
Union demands had consistently focused on fair wage adjustments and addressing stalled promotion files, particularly for long-serving staff members and those with advanced qualifications.

The SNT praised this new agreement, stressing 'the positive momentum the company has experienced at various levels since the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Benchaaboun at the head of collective management.'
The union noted his 'social awareness and unprecedented initiative toward telecommunications workers,' signaling a clear break from the management style of his predecessor, Ahizoune.
As the leading union in the sector, the SNT pledged to continue defending workers' rights while engaging responsibly in projects aimed at strengthening Maroc Telecom's leadership.
Their focus remains on improving services nationally and internationally while enhancing working and living conditions for employees and retirees.
This agreement establishes a model for constructive social partnership between unions and management of major national institutions, introducing a fresh approach to professional relationships built on dialogue, collaboration, and responsibility. Tags: Maroc TelecomTelecommunications in Morocco

Moroccans Spend Over MAD 15.5 Billion on Travel Abroad by June

Rabat – Moroccans' spending on travel abroad reached MAD 15.5 billion ($1.69 billion) in the first half of 2025, new data from the Moroccan exchange office has indicated. The number represents an increase of 8.2% in the first half of this year compared to MAD 14.33 billion ($1.56 billion) recorded during the same period last year. In addition, these new numbers reflect significant growth compared to the same period in 2021 and 2022, when Morocco's travel spending reached MAD 4.15 billion ($453.3 million) and MAD 7.95 billion ($869.3 million) during the same period, respectively. The relatively low numbers recorded in 2021 and 2022 were attributed to the lockdowns and travel restrictions triggered by COVID-19. In 2024, a survey by market research firm Sunergia listed travel preferences of Moroccans, showing that Spain, France, and Italy are the favorite international destinations for Moroccans. The three destinations attract 29%, 27%, and 17% of Moroccan visitors, respectively. Turkiye is also one of the top destinations for Moroccans, with 15% of the Sunergia survey respondents ranking the country as their favorite destination for summer vacation. As for local tourism, Moroccans prefer Tangier as a destination for tourism, alongside Marrakech and Agadir. About 38% of Moroccans see Tangier as their top destination, followed by Marrakech (33%), Agadir (26%), and Tetouan (22%). Casablanca comes in fifth position on the list, followed by Rabat, Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen, and Ifrane. Tags: Morocco TourismMorocco tourism 2020 Vision Plan

Morocco's Aeronautics Exports Hit MAD 14.13 Billion in First Half of 2025

Marrakech – Morocco's aerospace sector continues its upward trajectory, with exports reaching MAD 14.13 billion ($1.41 billion) during the first six months of 2025, an 8.8% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Office des Changes. This expansion flows primarily from increased sales in the Assembly segment, which jumped by MAD 728 million ($72.8 million), and the Electrical Wiring Interconnection System (EWIS) segment, which advanced by MAD 427 million ($42.7 million). The positive performance extends the sector's remarkable decade-long transformation. Between 2014 and 2024, Morocco's aeronautical exports more than tripled, skyrocketing from MAD 7.69 billion ($769 million) to MAD 26.44 billion ($2.64 billion) – representing a 244% increase over ten years and an average annual growth rate of approximately 13%. Meanwhile, the EWIS segment witnessed exports climb from MAD 3.89 billion ($389 million) to MAD 9.1 billion ($910 million) during the same period, despite a temporary setback during the COVID-19 pandemic. Morocco's aerospace industry currently encompasses 150 companies generating an annual revenue of €2.5 billion. These firms, concentrated in Casablanca, Tangier, Rabat, and Fez, employ 26,000 workers full-time, specializing in fuselages, structural components, interior furnishings, and wiring systems. Speaking at the Paris Air Show last month, Minister of Industry and Commerce Ryad Mezzour revealed Morocco's competitive advantages, including lower production costs – €25 per hour compared to €100-120 in Europe or the US. He also stressed a steady supply of engineering talent, with 400 of the country's 23,000 annual engineering graduates entering the aeronautics sector. Looking ahead, Mezzour outlined ambitious plans to expand the industry's capabilities to include cabin fittings and landing gear manufacturing, with the goal of establishing aircraft assembly lines within the next decade. He projected doubling the sector's turnover by 2030. The aeronautics industry thrives on Morocco's strategic location near Europe, free trade agreements, political stability, competitive costs, and skilled workforce. The country has poured investments into infrastructure and training, including the Institut des Métiers de l'Aéronautique (IMA), to propel the sector's growth. The local integration rate has strengthened significantly, rising from 18% in 2010 to over 40% in certain segments today. Major international players including Boeing, Airbus, Safran, Stelia, and Bombardier have integrated Morocco as a strategic link in their global value chains, further cementing the country's position as an emerging aeronautical powerhouse in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Glovo Morocco Reaches Settlement with Competition Council over Antitrust Allegations

Marrakech – Glovo Morocco announced today that it has reached a settlement agreement with Morocco's Competition Council, ending the antitrust investigation into the food delivery platform's operations in the country's meal delivery sector. The agreement comes after the Competition Council formally notified Glovo of alleged anticompetitive practices in May, following a surprise inspection of the company's Casablanca offices in October 2024. The investigation was initiated by the Council's self-referral decision number 20/D/2024 dated February 19, 2024. Glovo Morocco chose to settle to 'continue to focus fully on its mission' of supporting partners, couriers, and customers across Morocco, according to the company's statement. The settlement demonstrates Glovo's commitment to maintaining a 'constructive relationship with Moroccan authorities and regulatory bodies.' The Spanish-founded delivery platform has committed to implementing several measures to strengthen transparency and fairness on its platform in the Moroccan market. For restaurant and café partners, Glovo pledges to modify commercial agreements by removing exclusivity clauses and publishing a detailed guide to ensure transparency in partner ranking on the app. These initiatives aim to provide restaurant owners with a better understanding and increased visibility of how the food delivery platform functions. For couriers, Glovo commits to establishing pioneering standards for independent platform workers in Morocco. The company will contribute an additional annual financial commitment of approximately MAD 31 million ($3.1 million) directly to self-employed couriers, subject to conditions that will be explained during implementation. Glovo will also establish a MAD 5 million ($500,000) annual Impact Fund for couriers, dedicated to scholarships covering higher education and vocational training. The fund aims to help couriers improve their career prospects, knowledge, and skills. The company further commits to implementing a competitive and transparent service pricing structure, promoting courier awareness of compliance with laws and regulations, and facilitating access to insurance solutions adapted to independent worker status. Glovo will also deploy initiatives focused on professional development and the importance of road safety. These commitments bring Glovo's total additional financial contribution to over MAD 35 million ($3.5 million), setting 'a new standard for independent platform workers in Morocco.' A troubled spell for Glovo in Morocco The settlement comes at a challenging moment for Glovo in Morocco. This month, delivery workers protested in Casablanca against what they claimed was a 'truncated' map of Morocco on the company's application that allegedly omitted the Sahara region, along with expressing dissatisfaction with their working conditions. Couriers voiced concerns about bearing all operational costs themselves while earning insufficient income. Glovo responded to these protests by explaining that the map issue was a 'technical anomaly' that occurred 'following a recent external update' and assured the error had been corrected. The company insisted it operates 'across the entire national territory, from Tangier to Laayoune, with full respect for the Kingdom's territorial integrity.' The company claimed it 'has always maintained an open dialogue policy with the courier community' and stated that 'in recent weeks, exchange sessions were held with a hundred couriers in Casablanca in a constructive spirit,' where Glovo presented 'concrete proposals aimed at improving the couriers' experience.' Morocco represents Glovo's fourth-largest market globally, with the platform working with more than 6,500 business partners and 4,500 couriers throughout the country. Since establishing operations in Morocco, Glovo has transformed the local home delivery landscape. Glovo Morocco states it will continue to collaborate with the Competition Council and relevant authorities to actively participate in establishing a legal framework while strengthening its competition law compliance program. The Competition Council, headed by Ahmed Rahhou, had previously accused Glovo of abusing its dominant market position, exploiting the economic dependency of its commercial partners, and implementing unfairly low pricing strategies. Article 7 of Law No. 104-12 on freedom of prices and competition prohibits behaviors that aim to 'prevent, restrict or distort competition,' specifically forbidding the imposition of 'unjustified commercial conditions' or 'minimum resale prices.' Founded in Barcelona in 2014, Glovo has rapidly expanded globally and is now owned nearly 94% by German firm Delivery Hero. The company has faced mounting criticism over its economic model based on the precarious status of delivery workers. In June, European authorities fined Glovo €106 million for anti-competitive practices, including no-poaching agreements.
