‘World Oceans Day' brings spotlight on marine conservation

Visakhapatnam: Marking the 'World Oceans Day' and focusing on marine conservation, a beach clean-up activity was undertaken by Andhra University. Involving staff, research scholars and students, the programme was held on Sunday at RK Beach. Volunteering to build an ocean-friendly community, scientists and technical staff from NCCR, CMFRI, CIFT, NIO and NSTL also participated in the event.
Centred on the theme 'wonder: sustaining what sustains us', the volunteers highlighted the importance of keeping the coastline clean and plastic-free. The awareness programme was flagged off by Vice Chancellor of Andhra University GP Raja Sekhar in the presence of MVR Raju, Principal of Science College, among others. Speaking on the occasion, the VC emphasised the importance of marine ecology and the need to safeguard the seas for future generations. About 100 volunteers participated in the programme. An ambulance service with medical and paramedical staff was deployed at the beach to meet any medical emergency. About 135-kg of debris was collected and handed over to GVMC Visakhapatnam for further disposal and recycling.
The programme was supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, among others. Marking the occasion, the beach clean-up programme was simultaneously carried out in 21 beaches across the country at the same time in 21 beaches.

Visakhapatnam: Vishweshvar Chandrachud Dev, family member of Maharaja Vikram Dev Varma, said that an annual scholarship of Rs 1 lakh will be provided to students of College of Science and Technology, Andhra University. Meeting AU Vice Chancellor GP Rajasekhar in his office at the campus, he handed over a cheque for the same. He said that every year, he will continue to donate Rs 1 lakh to Andhra University through his charitable trust for the purpose and informed that scholarships to meritorious students studying in the college will be given through the contribution. Vishweshvar Chandrachud Dev recalled that during the establishment of the College of Science and Technology, Andhra University, Maharaja Vikram Dev Varma donated Rs.1 lakh annually to the college as he was fond of the education sector.

APPGECET-2025 results: 94% candidates qualify for PG admissions

Visakhapatnam About 94% of the 14,231 candidates who registered for Andhra Pradesh Post Graduate Engineering Common Entrance Test (APPGECET-2025) were declared eligible for admission into engineering and pharmacy postgraduate courses, as per the results released on Tuesday. Among the qualified candidates, 5,491 were men and 5,753 were women. The Andhra University (AU) conducted the APPGECET entrance exam on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) for admission to and programmes in higher educational institutions across the State. The examination was conducted in six sessions from June 6 to June 8 in 18 cities across 24 districts, including Hyderabad. The exam covered 13 subjects in engineering and pharmacy.

Andhra Pradesh government to introduce programmes in Quantum Technologies and AI in engineering and degree colleges

The State government has decided to introduce minor programmes in Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in both engineering and conventional degree colleges from the academic year 2025-26. An expert committee, constituted by the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) to design and develop a robust curriculum framework for Quantum Computing, Quantum Technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI), in alignment with the National Education Police (NEP), 2020 and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) guidelines, met on Sunday (June 22). The meeting, headed by APSCHE Chairman K. Madhu Murthy, discussed key aspects of the curriculum design, capacity-building, development of a Quantum Lab and research, innovation and start-ups. Former Special Secretary, Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Ganta Subba Rao, who is also a member of the committee, said quantum technology represents an emerging field poised to revolutionise numerous sectors, from computing and sensing to communication. Its transformative potential necessitates a specialised workforce capable of navigating its complexities and driving its development. After a thorough round of discussion, it was decided to introduce a Minor Degree in Quantum Technologies (Engineering stream) for 18 credits, a Minor Degree in Artificial Intelligence (Engineering and General streams) for 18 credits and a Minor Degree in Quantum Technologies (General Degree stream) for 16 credit points The meeting also decided to conduct Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) for 500 faculty in physics, electronics, mathematics and computer science disciplines. The committee members also proposed to set up Quantum Labs at Andhra University, JNTU-Kakinada, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Sri Venkateswara University, JNTU-Anantapur and Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) The expert committee is represented by the Head, Quantum Technology Cell, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, J.B. V. Reddy, as its Chairman and former Special Secretary, Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Ganta Subba Rao, Vice-Chancellor (incharge) Acharya Nagarjuna University K.
