LOS ANGELES — The New York Mets came into this season as a postseason contender and a real threat in the NL East, a division they haven't won since they went to the World Series in 2015. And while the addition of $765 million man Juan Soto to a team that finished their season in the NLCS is a big reason behind the team's high expectations, what this team may end up being remembered for is the dominance of its pitching.
New York's pitching has been its biggest strength throughout the first half of the season and even without having left-hander Sean Manaea, who was the team's best starter in 2024, they've not only been able to manage, they've thrived.

The Mets currently lead all of MLB in team ERA this season and all five of the team's starters currently have a sub-4.00 ERA, with each having at least 11 starts.
But how has New York turned itself into a factory for pitching?
Mets' pitching coach Jeremy Hefner is considered one of the best in baseball and is a big part of the success of the staff. But if you ask any pitcher on the roster, they'd tell you it's not a one-man show. The Mets' pitching infrastructure, which includes the big-league coaching staff, player development and analytics department, have helped create an environment for the best pitching staff in baseball.

What's impressive about the Mets' success this season it's not just been guys who have had time in the organization to absorb years of information, like David Petersen, Tylor Megill or even veteran Kodai Senga. It's also been arms who have recently come from other organizations, like Griffin Canning or Clay Holmes — which speaks to their talent, but also the consistent messaging players have been able to absorb.

'It's a group effort,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "You got to give credit to the front office that is continuing to acquire these guys and identifying potential players that you could tinker with. And then the whole pitching group, from Hef to [assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel], Eric Jagers in player development, they work on being on the same page, identifying not only on how we can help guys, but just how we present the information to the players. Meeting players where they're at.'
The Mets aren't the first team in baseball to make adjustments to improve pitching. But what they have done is built a strong résumé of success stories. Manaea went from bouncing around with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants on one-year deals with ERAs near 5, to an ERA in the mid-3s in New York. He signed a three-year, $75 million contract to stay in Queens.
By the same token, right-hander Luis Severino was coming off the worst season of his career in 2023 with the Yankees before joining the Mets. And after a year in the Mets' pitching lab, the Venezuela native not only stayed healthy for the first time since 2018, but maintained an ERA in the 3s and parlayed that into a three-year, $67 million deal with the Athletics, the largest contract in team history.

'During the [2023] offseason, I was just thinking, what could I do to be better?,' Severino said. '2018 was the last time I threw more than 100 innings. So I was just looking for a pitch to keep me in the games. So I think [us] adding that sinker, sweeper and cutter action, I was able to throw more innings. I wasn't focused on striking everybody out.'
Canning is the team's latest reclamation project where it's struck gold. The Mets' right-hander allowed an American-League leading 99 earned runs last year with the Angels before coming to New York. This season, Canning has a career-best 3.23 ERA in 11 starts and has increased his strikeout rate and ground-ball percentage.
'The staff has obviously done research on you before you get here, so they already have some things in mind that they want to try and work on,' Canning said. 'I think the big thing is that they have a plan and they're really good about how they communicate with guys. It's unique to each guy and they know how to work to guys' strengths.'
But it's not just success in their rotation, but also in their bullpen.

Reliever Ryne Stanek is no stranger to organizations that rely heavily on data, pitching two-plus seasons for the Tampa Bay Rays and three seasons for the Houston Astros. And when the reliever was traded to the Mets last season, it started an intricate process to get him back to being the best version of himself.
'They're just like, 'Hey man, this is what we want. This is what we think you can do. How can we help you get there? They're just really open and are willing to put in the work and the time to figure it out,' Stanek recalled. 'Communicating with all the different groups that we have, like the analytics group talks to the pitching groups, and pitching groups talk to the analytics, and they both talk to the athletic training to keep workloads manageable and keep performance at a level that's sustainable and gets the most out of you performance-wise.'
After a slow start with New York last season, Stanek has a 3.10 ERA in 24 appearances this season and is back to being one of the most reliable relievers in baseball. Stanek has seen firsthand what the Mets have been able to do and credits it not only to the team, but players who want to be better.
'A lot of it is buy-in,' Stanek said. 'When I was in Tampa, you'd have older guys come in, because Tampa has done really well at making guys better, I'm not gonna say resurrected guys, but like, making tweaks to get them back to where they had been in the past, or maybe a little bit better in some areas. And like Houston, kind of same boat. Whenever I came in last year and [Severino] and Sean [Manaea], it showed that they got better here. They made things a little bit more efficient, and just tweaked some things. And it's like, 'I believe that this is gonna work.' It says, 'I can see so much of it is, like, the ideas.'

'Think of it like Organization A vs. Organization B. Like, A has the right ideas, but they haven't implemented them enough to show that they're successful. Organization B, they've had a few guys that have come in and clearly have gotten better. They may be saying the same thing, but one can say, 'this is what we've done already. Trust us, we have a track record. You may take one step back, but you're gonna take three steps forward' versus 'Hey man, trust me, it's gonna work.'
The Mets have figured out how to get the most out of pitchers both in their rotation and in their bullpen. That's not to say it will always work, but being able to get the most out of their arms for an extended period is a luxury in this day and age in baseball. Pitching wins in October and the more quality pitching the Mets can attain, the more they increase their chances of success once they get there.

Not even a mid-tier veteran pickup. Just a single trade and a couple of restricted free agent tenders. This eerie stillness in an otherwise booming free agency market could ultimately be Brooklyn's biggest mistake, a strategic misstep that may leave them languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference for another year. Advertisement Armed with five first-round picks (Nos. 8, 19, 22, 26, 27), general manager Sean Marks had the assets to make a trade up the board. Instead, the Nets stood pat, becoming the first team in draft history to make five first-round selections in a single draft. The moves the Brooklyn Nets did make: A singular pivot The only transaction that registered a noticeable blip on the radar was the trade of Cameron Johnson to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 unprotected first-round pick. On paper, this looks like a swing toward the future. The Nets acquired a higher-upside scorer in Porter Jr., who, despite injury concerns, has All-Star potential. The unprotected pick sweetens the deal, adding a long-term asset to Brooklyn's collection. But this move alone does not meaningfully improve the team in the short term. Porter Jr. is a marginal upgrade at best, and the team's immediate roster remains deeply underwhelming. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Nets extended restricted free agent offers to Tyson Etienne, Tyrese Martin, Drew Timme, and Jalen Wilson, all promising but far from proven players. That's it. That's the sum of Brooklyn's offseason. What the Nets didn't do: The big mistake in the free agency Herein lies the critical error. The Nets' approach to 2025 free agency was defined not by bad decisions, but by no decisions. While teams like the Wizards, Rockets, and even the bottom-dwelling Hornets made calculated additions to their rosters, the Nets did… nothing. No new veterans to bolster their culture. No skilled role players to mentor their youth. No splash to excite the fanbase or show a sign of direction. Advertisement Brooklyn currently has an abundance of cap space, yet they've chosen to preserve it instead of invest it in talent. This 'salary flexibility' might look like prudence on paper, but inaction carries its own cost, especially when other teams are lapping you in development and identity. The bigger picture: no vision, no vibe Worse than their silence is what it suggests: the Nets seem caught between two identities. Are they rebuilding? Then why not lean fully into the youth movement, flip veterans, and gather more picks? Are they competing? Then why let your cap space rot on the bench instead of filling out a competitive rotation? This in-between space, where you're neither bad enough for a high draft pick nor good enough for playoff relevance, is the most dangerous place in the NBA. And right now, that's exactly where the Nets are headed. Advertisement With no clear floor general, no rim protection, no veteran leaders, and no high-end scorers besides maybe Porter Jr., this team is penciled in as a bottom-five team for the 2025–26 season. The good news? There's still time to pivot. Use cap space in the secondary market Plenty of veterans remain unsigned. The Nets could scoop up undervalued talent on short-term deals, players who can contribute now or become midseason trade assets. Think minimum-to-mid-level exception contracts with non-guaranteed second years. Aggressively monitor trade markets If Brooklyn truly wants to sit on cap space, they need to leverage it at the trade deadline. Absorbing unwanted contracts in exchange for picks is a valuable tool, but only if executed. Advertisement Define a clear rebuild If they're rebuilding, say it. Trade Reece Beekman and maybe even Nic Claxton for future assets. Embrace the youth, develop Cam Thomas, Porter Jr., Sharpe, and Ziaire Williams, and give fans a reason to be patient. Hire development-focused staff Brooklyn can no longer rely on star-chasing. They must become elite at player development. Bringing in coaches and staff with a track record of turning raw talent into NBA contributors will be critical. In an era where talent acquisition is everything, the Nets chose to do nothing. That silence, more than any one transaction, is their biggest mistake of 2025. While flexibility and future assets are valuable, they mean little without direction, identity, and action. However, the subsequent selections of point guards Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf left many draft observers scratching their heads. Advertisement The group made its NBA Summer League debut on Thursday, a 90-81 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Demin spent most of the game in an off-ball role on the wing. He envisions himself spending plenty of time at the position with Brooklyn. 'I got a little too deep into calling myself a point guard. Now, I prefer to say I'm a playmaker,' Demin said after his Nets debut. 'I just really want to learn how to make plays. Off the ball, how to be a cutter, how to be a screener, how to rebound the ball, and really improving myself on defense. Being a point guard nowadays is not coming to the idea of just bringing the ball up and organizing everybody, which it is for sure, but there are playmakers on the court who are not being point guards, and that's where I see myself at. I really want to be all over the court.' Demin finished with eight points, four rebounds and zero assists on 2-of-5 shooting. All of his attempts were three-pointers. The French point guard was dynamic with the ball in his hands, using his blazing speed to penetrate the paint at will. The Russian floor general was a bystander on offense for most of the game, rarely handling the ball or touching the paint. Advertisement After dominating the ball-handling responsibilities at BYU, the rhythm of playing alongside other primary ball-handlers will take some getting used to. 'It's a game plan, and how can we really find this connection between me and [Nolan] being on the floor at the same time? It's one ball, and we can't both be on it,' Demin said. 'We can alternate, we can switch. And for me, obviously, I can make this role look like a point guard, too, if I get the rebound and I just push it. It's just about the game plan and looking for something we can accomplish with this combination… How can I be playing different roles and doing whatever it takes to be efficient? Really being able to adjust myself and my game.' At 6-foot-8 with a 6-foot-10 wingspan, Demin has the size to play the wing. His ability to thrive off the ball will hinge on his development as an outside shooter. The No. 8 pick looked confident in that area during his debut, knocking down two deep threes off the catch. He was also solid defensively, using his length and hustle to disrupt multiple plays. On the surface, it would be puzzling for the Nets to draft a player whose elite skill is passing, then move him off the ball. However, the NBA is increasingly embracing positionless basketball. For Brooklyn, that means multiple ball-handlers who can move on and off the ball within the flow of the game. Advertisement 'We have a free-flowing offense,' said Nets Summer League coach Steve Hetzel. 'Whoever takes it out, Egor Demin can bring it up, Nolan can bring it up, Ben is kind of like a point guard, too. We've got a lot of ball-handlers on this team, so we don't designate anyone in particular.' But will the presence of so many ball-handlers hurt Demin's development? 'I don't believe so,' Hetzel said. 'This is the way our roster is constructed. The league is now multiple ball-handlers, multiple attackers. If you look at the team that just won the championship, they've got Jalen Williams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who can both put the ball in the paint. We feel like the more people that we can have attacking and making plays, the better we are.' 'Egor's biggest strength is his passing. Something that doesn't get recognized as much is the simple kick ahead. We want to play fast. He gets the outlet, he kicks it ahead to Danny, Ben, or Nolan, and now we're attacking. And he is very, very good at that. His passing, I think, will be his biggest strength, and then as he grows and gets stronger, he'll be able to get more downhill and into the paint.' Advertisement Fans should take Summer League action with a grain of salt. Teams have little time to practice together before taking the floor. Hetzel said the games are about instilling the core principles of how Brooklyn wants to play. 'We don't view the Summer League as featuring certain players. We want to establish a way to play, how we play as a Brooklyn Nets team,' he said. 'We try to adhere to our staples as much as we can: pace and space, paint touches, and ball reversals. We want everyone to have that mindset.' Yet, Thursday's game offered a glimpse into how the Nets' historic rookie class could fit together. For Demin, it was the first step in a journey he had been dreaming about his entire life. 'It was a dream come true,' Demin said. 'It was a special moment of accomplishing the dreams of these little kids who were trying to get here. It's a great experience, obviously. Some things went how we wanted them to go, some things didn't. It's a great time for learning.' Following the news that he was joining the Denver Nuggets in a trade for Michael Porter Jr., the veteran forward reflected on his Nets tenure during an emotional goodbye. The best part about playing for Brooklyn for me was showing up to work and seeing those guys and ladies that we had in the building,' Johnson said on The Young Man and the Three podcast. 'I enjoyed it because of that, and I had faith in what we were building because of that. I really think Jordi's a fantastic coach. The Nets trading their top player from last season further signals their commitment to a rebuild after making an NBA-record five first-round picks in the 2025 draft. General Manager Sean Marks thanked Johnson for his contributions after the deal became official. They're fresh off a championship just a couple of seasons ago. They have tremendous players, tremendous pieces, and from everything that I've been told, a high-level coaching staff,' he said. 'It was mentioned before that they were 30th in three-point attempts last season. We can fact-check that, but if that's true, it's not for a lack of opportunity. It's not for a lack of spacing on the court. 'Tim [Hardaway Jr. and I] both played against Denver plenty of times. They have Jamal, AG, Jokic, they're able to pull guys around the court and create double teams, create kick outs, create one mores. And for us, there's going to be a lot of opportunity to thrive.'
