New Zealand's long-awaited clean-up of employment rules – covering the Holidays Act, personal grievance procedures and health-and-safety red tape – is the exact reset many business owners asked for. Simpler leave calculations, clearer misconduct thresholds and less paperwork for low-risk workplaces should cut compliance costs and reduce courtroom flashpoints; yet the speed and breadth of the changes are rattling HR teams,' says Sanam Ahmadzadeh Salmani, Employment Hero's compliance lead for New Zealand.
Payroll specialists still wrestling with the current Holidays Act now have to map rosters, leave accruals and variable-pay calculations onto a brand-new hours-based model. Front-line managers worry that the tougher, faster personal-grievance process could expose gaps in their documentation and directors are digesting fresh safety duties that have arrived just as minimum-wage and migrant-visa settings shift again.
'Over the past quarter employers have told us they simply can't stay ahead of the rule changes. The reforms are positive, but without tech to do the heavy lifting – live payroll recalculations, templated contracts and real-time alerts – many SMEs will burn hours they don't have or risk expensive slip-ups,' believes Salmani.
Tech is the new safety net
Modern employment-operating systems (eOS) now bundle payroll, leave tracking and compliance 'copilots' into one dashboard. When Parliament tweaks a formula, the engine updates entitlements overnight; if a misconduct claim lands, employers can call on an on-call HR adviser and access the right template in minutes – no separate legal retainer required. 'It's like having a virtual in-house counsel and payroll guru 24/7,' says Salmani. 'That level of foresight isn't a nice-to-have any more; it's table stakes,' she adds.

King Charles decommissions royal train after 156 years of service
The Royal Train will soon leave the station for the last time. King Charles III has accepted it's time to decommission the train, whose history dates back to Queen Victoria, because it costs too much to operate and would have needed a significant upgrade for more advanced rail systems, Buckingham Palace said on Tuesday. "In moving forwards we must not be bound by the past," said James Chalmers, the palace official in charge of the king's financial affairs. "Just as so many parts of the royal household's work have modernised and adapted to reflect the world of today, so too the time has come to bid the fondest of farewells, as we seek to be disciplined and forward-looking in our allocation of funding." The train, actually a suite of nine railcars that could be hitched to commercial locomotives, would be decommissioned sometime before the current maintenance contract expired in 2027. That would bring to an end a tradition that dates back to 1869, when Queen Victoria commissioned a pair of special coaches to accommodate her travels. The decision was announced during the palace's annual briefing for reporters on the royal finances. ADVERTISEMENT The royal family would for the fourth consecutive year receive public funding of £86.3 million (NZ$194.4 million), including £34.5 million (NZ$77.7 million) to fund the remodelling of Buckingham Palace, in the 12 months through March 2026. This money came from a mechanism known as the Sovereign Grant, which set aside 12% of the net income from the Crown Estate to fund the official duties of the king and other members of the royal family. The Crown Estate was a portfolio of properties owned by the monarch during his reign. The properties were professionally managed and the king could not dispose of the assets. The Crown Estate ias one of the many relics of Britain's feudal past. King George III, who ruled during the American Revolution, surrendered management of the crown lands to Parliament in 1760 in return for a fixed payment from the Treasury. The royal finances remained a topic of public debate, with Charles pledging to slim down the monarchy and cut costs as he sought to ensure the institution's survival. Buckingham Palace was quick to point out that while the Sovereign Grant has been unchanged for the past four years, inflation has eroded its value. If the grant had increased in line with inflation, it would have been about 106 million pounds this year, the palace said. The basic grant was supplemented with £21.5 million (NZ$48.4 million) of income generated by properties outside the Crown Estate. This income increased by £1.7 million (NZ$3.8 million), driven by a record year for visitors to Buckingham Palace and special tours of the newly renovated East Wing. ADVERTISEMENT Craig Prescott, a constitutional law expert at Royal Holloway, University of London who focused on the political role of the monarchy, said funding for the royals was relatively small when compared to the overall cost of the British state and it provides tangible benefits for the country. "It's something that puts Britain on the world stage in a way that few other things do," he said, noting that Queen Elizabeth II's funeral was the largest gathering of world leaders in history and the coronation was broadcast around the world. "It's one of those things that people think about when they think about Britain." Over the past year, Charles travelled to Australia and attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa — his first as the organisation's head. The royals also took centre stage at the 80th anniversaries of D-Day and V-E Day, which marked the end of World War II in Europe, and welcomed the leaders of Japan and Qatar as they made state visits to the UK. Overall, the royals made 1900 public appearances in the UK and overseas. Some 93,000 guests attended 828 events at the royal palaces.

NZDF accepted nearly half-million in gifts, probe finds
The Defence Force has been warned it's risking public confidence after staff accepted nearly half a million in gifts and hospitality from suppliers, including concert tickets and being hosted on America's Cup yachts. An inquiry by Auditor-General John Ryan found the NZDF accepted over 2500 offers of gifts and hospitality between 2016 and 2025, valued at more than $418,000. He warned the practice risked "the public and Parliament losing confidence in the decisions made to contract with those suppliers" in a letter to the Defence Force chief. "In my view, NZDF has not paid sufficient attention to the risks that gifts and hospitality from commercial suppliers create," he wrote. "NZDF needs to carefully consider the inherent risks associated with continuing to accept any offer of gift or hospitality from a commercial supplier." ADVERTISEMENT Examples of gifts and hospitality included tickets to concerts, international rugby, cricket and rugby league matches, fishing charters and conference tickets. Personnel were also hosted on yachts during the America's Cup in 2021 and at the World of Wearable Arts. Auditor-General John Ryan (Source: 1News) Other examples included smartwatches, food and drink at functions, including coffees, breakfasts, lunches and dinners, along with alcohol. The Auditor-General said the pattern of accepting gifts was "inconsistent with good practice in public organisations". Ryan's office became aware that Defence Force staff had been accepting gifts and hospitality from a "commercial supplier" last year. He said that decisions on public spending through supplier contracts "must be, and be seen to be, made for the right reasons and not influenced inappropriately". NZDF has since 2023 introduced new policies and improvements that have reduced gift acceptances, which the Auditor-General acknowledged. But Ryan said the organisation continued to accept gifts and hospitality from suppliers despite the changes. Since the new policy, the organisation has accepted 390 gifts worth $40,272, including tickets and corporate hospitality at Super Rugby games and international matches. ADVERTISEMENT Ryan questioned policies allowing gifts that "contribute to NZDF outcomes and help build business relationships", saying it was difficult to reconcile with requirements that staff avoid situations where actions appear influenced by private interests. The inquiry also found some staff making individual judgments about gift acceptance, and others unaware that the policy had been updated in 2023. One example involved sporting tickets being accepted on the basis that there would be no work chat, which Ryan said showed "at best a misunderstanding of the policy". Staff were reminded in February and March this year of the importance of following the policy and that "personnel should decline offers unless there is a valid business purpose". It noted that "tickets to sporting events or dinners with commercial suppliers were unlikely to meet that expectation", according to the Auditor-General. 'No evidence' of 'inappropriate influence' – NZDF A spokesperson for the NZDF told 1News the organisation welcomed the inquiry. ADVERTISEMENT "The Defence Force will continue to ensure standards are maintained and improvements are made where required. No evidence was found of inappropriate influence of NZDF officials or decisions in relation to commercial contracts," they said. "Many of the concerns raised by the Office of the Auditor-General are historical in nature and have been addressed by improvements, many of which have been proactively implemented by the NZDF and prior to the inquiry commencing in late 2024." However, the NZDF accepted it "needs to continue work to ensure expectations are maintained". "Since the inquiry, the NZDF has undertaken further work to improve organisational awareness of its policies to ensure high standards are consistently and universally upheld. "The NZDF's policy on accepting gifts and hospitality reflects that the organisation must maintain constructive working relationships with commercial suppliers in the defence industry, particularly in the context of future procurement and the need to rapidly advance defence capabilities. "Improvements the NZDF has made include introducing new policy on gifts and hospitality in November 2023, establishing an enhanced gifts register, forming an integrity and coordination team, and communicating the chief of Defence Force's expectations." They noted the Defence Force reports annually to Parliament's foreign affairs, defence and trade select committee with a list of gifts and hospitality.
