Modi denies third party brokered peace with Pakistan

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday denied that any world leader pushed India to stop fighting Pakistan during their recent conflict, after repeated claims by US President Donald Trump that he had brokered peace. The South Asian rivals fought an intense four-day conflict in May that left more than 70 people dead on both sides before Trump announced a ceasefire between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
'No world leader asked us to stop the operation,' Modi told parliament during a debate on 'Operation Sindoor', the military campaign launched against Pakistan in May. Modi did not name Trump in his speech.
The Indian prime minister also claimed that it was Pakistan that pleaded with India to stop fighting after feeling the 'heat of our attacks'. The conflict was sparked by an April attack on tourists by gunmen in Indian-administered Kashmir that left 26 men dead, mostly Hindus.
India accused Pakistan of backing the attackers, a charge Islamabad denied. Trump has claimed numerous times that he brokered peace between the rivals, including most recently on Monday. 'If I weren't around, you'd have, right now, six major wars going on. India would be fighting with Pakistan,' Trump said during his visit to Scotland. Modi's assertion came after Rahul Gandhi from the opposition Congress party challenged the premier to say 'inside the parliament that Donald Trump is lying'. Earlier Tuesday, home minister Amit Shah told lawmakers that three Pakistani gunmen involved in the attack in Indian-administered Kashmir were killed during a military operation on Monday.
The fighting in May brought the countries close to another war, but Trump announced a ceasefire between them before the two countries did. Soon, opposition parties in India started raising questions about third-party mediation between the foes, a claim New Delhi has always denied. – AFP

Thailand, Cambodia welcome reduced trade tariff rates

PHNOM PENH: Thailand and Cambodia on Friday welcomed a 19 percent trade tariff announced by US President Donald Trump, avoiding a threatened levy of 36 percent days after he intervened to help broker a ceasefire in their deadly border conflict. Cambodia said it would drop all tariffs on imports from the United States and order up to 20 Boeing 737s for its national airline in a further effort to woo the Trump administration. Dozens of countries face steep levies under the tariff regime approved by Trump in Washington on Thursday, set to come into force in a week. He had originally threatened a swinging 49 percent tariff on Cambodia as part of his 'Liberation Day' measures aimed at rebalancing world trade in America's favor, but cut it to 36 percent last month. 'This is the best news for the people and economy of Cambodia to continue to develop the country,' Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote on Facebook after the 19 percent levy was announced. The tariff announcement came days after Trump intervened to help broker a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia to end border clashes that left more than 40 people dead. Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol told reporters Cambodia would 'zero out all tariff lines' for the United States — more than 11,000 in total. And he said a 'firm offer' had been made to buy 10 Boeing Max 8s for Air Cambodia, with an option to buy another 10. 'In addition to that we're going to buy whatever we can — medical equipment, agricultural products — from the US also, as long as the price is competitive,' he said. Cambodia is a major manufacturer of low-cost clothing for Western brands, with garment products accounting for most of its $10 billion in exports to the United States last year. Many factories in Cambodia are Chinese-owned and the White House has accused the kingdom of allowing Chinese goods to stop over on the way to US markets, thereby skirting steeper rates imposed on Beijing. Thailand had been negotiating with Washington for weeks, seeking a reduction in the threatened 36 percent levy. 'This finalized deal, setting US import tariffs at 19 percent, marks a major success for Thailand,' Thai government spokesman Jirayu Huangsab said in a statement. 'It represents a win-win approach aimed at preserving Thailand's export base and long-term economic stability.' The United States' goods trade deficit with Thailand hit $45.6 billion in 2024, up 11.7 percent from the year before, according to US Trade Representative data. Thailand has struggled to reignite its economy since the Covid-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions hammered the key tourism sector. The Thai government in May cut its 2025 economic growth forecast to 2.3-3.3 percent, from 3.2-4.2 percent, citing uncertainty over tariffs. Growth in 2024 was 2.5 percent. – AFP

Russia strikes kill 25 in Ukraine as Kremlin notes Trump ultimatum

Moscow says it wants peace in Ukraine hours after mounting heavy attacks KYIV, Ukraine: Russia said on Tuesday that it wanted peace in Ukraine, hours after mounting attacks that killed at least 25 people, including a 23-year-old pregnant woman and more than a dozen prison inmates. The strikes came just hours after US President Donald Trump shortened his deadline for Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine—now into a fourth year—or face new sanctions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of willfully targeting a prison in the Zaporizhzhia region—that Russia claims as its own—killing 16 people and wounding dozens others. 'It was a deliberate strike, intentional, not accidental. The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians in that facility,' Zelensky said on social media in response. The Kremlin denied the claim. 'The Russian army does not strike civilian targets,' spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, including from AFP. The attacks came hours after Trump said he was cutting the deadline for President Vladimir Putin to halt the Ukraine war from 50 days to 10-12 days. 'I really felt it was going to end. But every time I think it's going to end he kills people,' Trump said Monday on a visit to Scotland. 'I'm not so interested in talking (to him) anymore,' he added. Peskov said Moscow had 'taken note' of Trump's new deadline and that it remained 'committed to the peace process to resolve the conflict around Ukraine and secure our interests.' Ukraine's justice ministry said Russian forces hit the prison in Bilenke with four glide bombs. Police said 16 inmates were killed and 43 wounded. Bricks and debris and blown out windows were strewn on the ground, according to images released by the ministry. The facility's perimeter was intact and there was no threat that inmates would escape, it added. Rescue workers searched for survivors in pictures released by the region's emergency services. A senior Ukrainian source said that 274 people were serving sentences in the Bilenkivska facility. The source added there were no Russian war prisoners at the centre. Nadiya, a resident of Bilenke, told AFP the attack damaged her house. 'At about ten minutes to six, a neighbour called and said: 'Come quickly, your roof is gone.' Is that normal? Not a single window is intact,' the 74-year-old said. The Ukrainian air force said that Russia also launched 37 drones and two missiles overnight, adding that its air defense systems had downed 32 of the drones. One attack targeted a hospital in the town of the Kamyanske in the Dnipropetrovsk region, wounding 22 people. 'Putin is rejecting a ceasefire, avoiding a leaders' meeting, and prolonging the war,' Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said on social media. 'He will only end his terror if we break the spine of his economy,' he added, calling on Western allies to consolidate around sanctions on Moscow. 'Three people were killed in the attack, including a pregnant woman. Her name was Diana. She was only 23-years-old,' Zelensky said. Separate strikes in the eastern Kharkiv region that borders Russia killed six people, regional authorities said. In the southern Russian region of Rostov, a Ukrainian drone attack killed one person, the region's acting governor said. Kyiv has been trying to repel Russia's summer offensive, which has made fresh advances into areas largely spared since the start of the invasion in 2022. The Russian defense ministry claimed fresh advances across the front line on Tuesday, saying its forces had taken two more villages—one in the Donetsk region, and another in Zaporizhzhia region. The prison strike on Tuesday came on the third anniversary of an attack on another detention facility in occupied Ukrainian territory that Kyiv blamed on Moscow and was reported to have killed dozens of captured Ukrainian soldiers. Ukraine and Russia blamed each other for the night-time strike three years ago on the Olenivka detention centre in Russian-occupied Donetsk region, which the Kremlin says is part of Russia. Ukraine says dozens of its soldiers who laid down their arms after a long Russian siege of the port city of Mariupol were killed in the attack. – AFP

Construction on $200 million White House ballroom to begin in September

WASHINGTON, Aug 2, (AP): The White House on Thursday announced that construction on a massive, new $200 million ballroom will begin in September and be ready before President Donald Trump 's term ends in early 2029. It will be the latest change introduced to what's known as "The People's House' since the Republican president returned to office in January. It also will be the first structural change to the Executive Mansion itself since the addition of the Truman balcony in 1948. Trump has substantially redecorated the Oval Office through the addition of golden flourishes and cherubs, presidential portraits and other items, and installed massive flagpoles on the north and south lawns to fly the American flag. Workers are currently finishing up a project to replace the lawn in the Rose Garden with stone. Trump for months has been promising to build a ballroom, saying the White House doesn't have space big enough for large events and scoffing at the notion of hosting heads of state and other guests in tents on the lawn as past administrations have done for state dinners attended by hundreds of guests. The East Room, the largest room in the the White House, can accommodate about 200 people. Trump said he's been planning the construction for some time. "They've wanted a ballroom at the White House for more than 150 years but there's never been a president that was good at ballrooms,' Trump told reporters Thursday. "I'm good at building things and we're going to build quickly and on time. It'll be beautiful, top, top of the line.' He said the new ballroom would not interfere with the mansion itself. "It'll be near it but not touching it and pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of,' he said of the White House. "It's my favorite. It's my favorite place. I love it.' Trump said the ballroom will serve administrations to come. "It'll be a great legacy project,' he said. "I think it will be really beautiful.' The 90,000-square-foot ballroom will be built where the East Wing sits with a seated capacity of 650 people. T he East Wing houses several offices, including the first lady's. Those offices will be temporarily relocated during construction and that wing of the building will be modernized and renovated, said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. "Nothing will be torn down,' she said.
