
Seagate unveils 30TB drives to power AI-ready data centres
The new drives are based on Seagate's Mozaic3+ platform and utilise heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. With more than one million Mozaic hard drives shipped to date, Seagate is marking a milestone in its storage technology offering. The larger capacity options are designed for use in on-premises, private, and sovereign data centres, reflecting current trends towards AI adoption and compliance with new data sovereignty laws emerging around the world.
Recent years have seen a significant increase in investment into on-premises and hybrid data centre infrastructure, driven in part by advancements in artificial intelligence and requirements for local data stewardship.
Melyssa Banda, Senior Vice President of Edge Storage and Services at Seagate, addressed the shifting landscape: "Today, approximately 90% of the world's data is stored in just 10 countries. However, data gravity is increasingly pulling networks to the edge as nearly 150 countries adopt data sovereignty requirements, and AI workloads continue to expand. Datacentres - on-prem, private, and sovereign - are leveraging AI to unlock the value of their proprietary data," said Melyssa Banda, SVP of Edge Storage and Services, Seagate. "Our 30TB drives are designed to support these rapidly growing trends, delivering the capacity, efficiency, and resilience needed to power the AI workloads."
Industry observers are aligning with the notion that the storage industry is experiencing fundamental shifts. Ed Burns, Research Director for Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies at IDC, commented on the wider infrastructure changes: "Hyperscalers and enterprise data centres are in the early stages of an all-out arms race to develop AI infrastructure resulting in rapidly increasing capex spending on performance-oriented hardware," said Ed Burns, Research Director, Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies at IDC. "While not often associated with performance such as low latency, the highest capacity HDDs are a critical strategic asset in the AI development process, filling the need for mass capacity storage of the foundational data essential to building and improving the highest quality AI models in the market today and into the future. Enterprise customers are seeking ways to improve the density of their data centres, lowering power consumption and square footage requirements while ensuring storage continues to meet strategic requirements, and Seagate's new 30TB Exos product is the highest density hard drive offered in the industry today. Hyperscale and enterprise data centre customers looking for optimal performance and cost tradeoffs for mass-capacity storage will benefit from Seagate's HAMR product roadmap, which is poised to accelerate areal density growth rates for HDDs in the years to come."
Industry forecasts suggest rapid market changes are underway. Hewlett Packard Enterprise projects the on-premises AI market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 90%, reaching an estimated USD $42 billion within three years. NVIDIA has described the new approach to handling AI data as developing 'AI factories' – data centres that manufacture intelligence at scale.
Industry demand for high-density and high-throughput storage correlates with the adoption of AI for use cases like video analytics and predictive maintenance. This shift has driven changes in storage architecture, such as greater adoption of disaggregated storage that separates compute and storage resources, enabling more flexibility and scalability.
Product specifics
The Exos M 30TB drive is engineered to provide high-capacity, energy efficient storage and allows for scalable solutions that support real-time analytics and reliable performance in edge environments. Similarly, the IronWolf Pro 30TB is optimised for NAS systems, supporting workloads that require both high throughput and low latency.
Dhaval Panara, Product Manager with QNAP, addressed how these high-capacity drives enhance enterprise NAS applications: "QNAP NAS systems are increasingly used for on-premise AI workloads - enabling enterprises to run local AI models and leverage RAG and LLM technologies to process and analyse local datasets," said Dhaval Panara, Product Manager, QNAP. "By integrating Seagate's IronWolf Pro 30TB drives, we deliver petabyte-scale, high-integrity storage that ensures fast access, reliable performance, and scalable infrastructure at the edge."
Evan Li, Head of International Business at UGREEN, also highlighted the drives' significance for edge applications: "With AI workloads increasingly moving to edge environments, reliable high-capacity storage becomes critical for local data processing. Seagate's IronWolf Pro 30TB drives provide the robust foundation UGREEN NAS systems require - delivering massive scalability and the operational stability needed for local AI applications," said Evan Li, Head of International Business, UGREEN.
IDC analysis points to sectors such as retail, manufacturing, and financial services as key adopters of AI at the edge, with global NAS market growth projected at over 17% annually through to 2034. The convergence of AI, IoT, and hybrid cloud is cited as accelerating the need for high-integrity, large-capacity storage solutions.
Regional availability and pricing
The Exos M 30TB and IronWolf Pro 30TB drives are currently available through authorised resellers in Australia and are set to become available in New Zealand soon. Prices for the Exos M 30TB are listed at AUD $1,309 and NZD $1,569, while IronWolf Pro 30TB is available at AUD $1,319 and NZD $1,499.

NZ's AI strategy: ‘light touch' regulation and business opportunities
The Government's AI strategy confirms the country is taking a light-touch approach to AI regulation. This will provide reassurance to businesses looking to embrace the benefits of AI, while also reminding businesses of their governance responsibilities and the need to ensure compliance with existing legal frameworks. The AI strategy follows recent guidance for the public sector, discussed in our previous article. Alongside the AI strategy, the Government has also issued a note entitled 'Responsible AI Guidance for Businesses'. In this article, we explore the key takeaways for New Zealand businesses and next steps. Key takeaways The AI strategy has been developed following a Cabinet decision in July 2024 committing to a strategic approach. The paper recognised a clear strategic direction would 'clear the path for AI to deliver better outcomes for people in New Zealand'. The new strategy seeks to achieve this in various ways: Regulatory clarity and light touch legislation The strategy notes uncertainty about how existing laws apply to AI may result in 'a cautious approach to AI implementation until regulatory clarity improves'. As a result, it confirms New Zealand is taking a light touch and 'principles-based' approach to AI policy. It helpfully identifies New Zealand has existing regulatory frameworks (e.g., privacy, consumer protection, human rights) which are largely principles-based and technology-neutral, and which can be updated if needed to enable AI innovation. This is a pragmatic and positive approach we expect will provide reassurance to businesses exploring the adoption of AI, and will avoid some of the challenges created by detailed standalone legislation such as the EU's AI Act (as discussed in our prior commentary here). Adoption focus The strategy outlines New Zealand's deliberate focus on AI adoption rather than development. That recognises the economic challenge and significant investment required for creating foundational AI. This approach is intended to 'more rapidly realise productivity benefits across the economy without waiting for local AI development to mature'. Upskilling the workforce It identifies that New Zealand faces a shortage of AI expertise across several sectors. The paper notes New Zealand universities are helping to bridge the gap by building a 'future-ready' workforce through specialised programmes, and notes the Government's investment in tuition, STEM, and youth support to boost enrolment and career pathways. In addition, the new 'Responsible AI Guidance' offers a valuable framework to help businesses adopt AI responsibly and effectively. The guidance encourages organisations to clearly define their purpose for using AI, prepare thorough stakeholder engagement and safe testing, and align AI objectives with internal policies. It also recommends building strong governance structures and ensuring compliance with existing regulations. The guidance emphasises the importance of high-quality, unbiased data and cautions against using AI in areas where human judgment is essential. What does this mean for your business? The strategy will provide reassurance to businesses seeking to adopt AI systems, and the Responsible AI Guidance offers a helpful consolidated roadmap. In practice, however, the application of the recommendations can be complex and businesses should start thinking early about the implications of the Government's announcement and how they can respond to the new guidance. We summarise below what we see as the key takeaways and next steps: Clarify your AI purpose: Define what you want AI to achieve in your organisation and ensure the intended use is lawful and aligned with your business goals. AI's increasing lies may reflect it is learning to become more human
It's anticipated that OpenAI's web browser will include ChatGPT features built in, among other attributes. A Kiwi, Ben Goodger, is also reportedly heavily involved in its plans. But as we dive headfirst into this new AI-fuelled future, we should demand that this new technology gets the basics right first. Over the past 30 years the internet has opened up our world. We can connect with people and enjoy endless volumes of information with the click of a button. It's a scene out of the Jetsons, minus the flying cars – for now. Traditionally, most internet searches have given the user an exhaustively long list of links to websites with varying degrees of relevant information. The user can then sort through what they find and determine what is most helpful, discarding the rest. However, with AI (artificial intelligence) tools acting as an aggregator, scraping the depths of the internet for whatever information it can find, we must ask: how reliable are its replies to our questions? Well, the growing evidence suggests the reliability is not good. When researching for a story, Google's AI Overview, which provides a summary in response to a user's search prompt, confidently asserted to the Herald that Jim Bolger was a Labour Prime Minister. Even more concerning, however, was that its answer cited official New Zealand Government websites as the source for this information. Bolger spent his entire political career in Parliament with the National Party, so predictably these 'sources' contained no information to support the falsehood. This is an example of what is now commonly referred to as an AI hallucination. It is when the system's algorithm generates information that seems plausible but is totally fabricated. Some of these hallucinations could be relatively minor, but others could be gross misrepresentations of the world we live in and our history. In a New York Times article, published by the Herald on Sunday earlier this year, researchers found the hallucination rate appeared to be increasing. The newest and most powerful systems – called reasoning systems – from companies including OpenAI and Google were generating more errors, not fewer. On one test, the hallucination rates of newer AI systems were as high as 79%. This hardly seems like a piece of technology we can or should be relying on to make sense of our world or teach others about it. We should use AI to help us where it can and there are already basic functions where it performs well, but we need to be wary of the evangelists who preach it as the answer to all our productivity and economic woes. The matter of why AI is having more Jim Morrison-like hallucinations has confused both the technology's creators and sceptical researchers. Perhaps it wants to please us? Perhaps it wants to give us the answers we want to hear – confirming the bias in our questions. Perhaps it is learning to act more human? Why The Spinoff is explaining the news on TikTok, explained
This week we launch Now You Know, a video series explaining issues that matter to young people. Head of audience Anna Rawhiti-Connell explains why. Last week, I was brainstorming something and threw a few stats on social media use and attention into Gemini. The AI yelled its summary back at me with this headline: 'THE ATTENTION APOCALYPSE'. We all know generative AI has bias, and that includes one towards bad news. It's hard to avoid headlines full of worry and fear about everything these days, and that applies to ones about social media, media and journalism. 'News avoidance' and 'declining trust in media' have become phrases that roll quickly and easily off the tongues of those of us in biz, keeping many of us awake at night and in constant conversation about what it means and why. The Reuters Institute Digital News report – compulsory reading for many in our industry, alongside the NZ On Air Where Are the Audiences survey – is rich with insight, and this year's report presented a tipping point for news consumption behaviour among under-35s in the United States. Over half (54% of 18–24s and 50% of 25–34s) now identify social media and video networks as their main source of news. Globally, across all 48 markets surveyed, 44% of 18–24-year-olds and 38% of 25–34-year-olds cite social media and video networks as their primary news source. New Zealand is not one of the markets surveyed, and we have our unique news landscape, but it's safe to assume these trends are being replicated here. The 2024 Where Are the Audiences survey showed global video sharing platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) reach 90% of 15-24-year-olds. These findings are often presented in concerning tones, for many good reasons. Sometimes they're framed as a lack of engagement with news as we've known it among younger people, or patronisingly, as indifference. If you've spent any time on #nzpol TikTok or watching YouTube essays, you know that isn't true. There are always reasons to worry about where people get their information and the dominance of global tech companies. Sources have split into thousands of tributaries, people are more polarised, and the phrase 'post-truth' has been in widespread circulation for nearly a decade. There are also opportunities to change and meet people where they are. Describing the battle for control of your screen between Netflix and YouTube, and referencing the old go-to for the entertainment industry, 'content is king,' a talent executive for William Morris recently said, these days 'audience is king'. There isn't a silver bullet for addressing many of the challenges the industry faces and the problems a highly fragmented information environment creates. Fuelling our appetite for innovating, coming down from the mountain and meeting people where they are are just some of the things we can do. Now You Know, the new video explainer series we're launching today, is about meeting people where they are. Aimed at young people between the ages of 18-24, its goal is to create reliable, regular and relevant news explainers about issues that matter to young people. Another vital component part is a reliable and regular face at the helm each week. That's where Robbie Nicol comes in. Well known to audiences as the creator of the award-winning political commentary web series White Man Behind A Desk and writer and host of RNZ's The Citizen's Handbook, he'll be writing and fronting a lot of the videos, with appearances from the wider team at The Spinoff.
