Balding: We'll work back from the Arc with Kalpana
Returned to her favoured distance of a mile and a half, it momentarily looked like Kalpana had slipped the field when Oisin Murphy asked the Juddmonte-owned filly to quicken.
However, hot on her tail was Francis-Henri Graffard's French raider Calandagan, who ensured Kalpana had to once again dip into her reserves and battle before being thwarted close home.
'I'm very proud of her, she's run her heart out again and just been beaten by a very good horse,' said Balding.
'She's done nothing wrong, had every chance, just bumped into a quick one on the day.
'It would have probably helped our cause if a bit more rain had got into the ground, but we can't complain.'
For Juddmonte it was once again Graffard who proved their nemesis after Goliath denied Bluestocking 12 months ago.
Ralph Beckett's filly would of course claim the Prix Vermeille and then the Arc, and hopes are high Kalpana could do the same.

Her route to the Arc could see her follow Bluestocking and head to ParisLongchamp for an early sighter in the Vermeille.
But Balding could instead use another route successfully used by a Juddmonte star in the past – and search for back-to-back victories in Kempton's September Stakes, a race Enable won before downing Sea Of Class in the French capital in 2018.
'She's a class act and she's tightened up again since her two runs and come forward again, we're excited about the autumn,' added Balding.
'I would have thought that was a career-best effort and we'll be working back from Paris in October.
'She's in the Yorkshire Oaks, but she's had a hard race today and we'll work back from the Arc.
'We could head to the Vermeille, but she hasn't won a race yet this year so could go to the September Stakes without a penalty which might be an easier 'in'.
'It is likely to be one or the other and there's an extra week this year from the Vermeille to the Arc so anything is possible.
'The Kempton race she won last year and is on our doorstep and you are guaranteed the surface. But the Vermeille could be a good shot at a Group One, so we'll see.'
Also given an international objective, albeit further afield, is Charlie Appleby's stable stalwart Rebel's Romance who was a luckless third in his quest to follow up Hardwicke Stakes success at Royal Ascot.
Short of room at a vital stage, William Buick was forced to sit and suffer, as he repeated last year's placed effort in the race.
Appleby said: 'He ran a solid race. It was a tactical race in a small field and no one would have expected the leader to be who it was (Jan Brueghel). It was very slow fractions in the first half a mile.
'We were in that pocket and with a horse that we know gallops we would have liked to have got out and got rolling. The rain earlier was nothing and that didn't settle the dust.
'He will go on his travels again now and we will point him towards the Canadian International.'

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, with the Sweden international said to have asked to leave the Magpies this summer Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has tipped Newcastle striker Alexander Isak to make the switch to Anfield this summer, claiming discussions have been ongoing for over 12 months. "I can only see Alexander Isak joining Liverpool if he does leave Newcastle, which is now expected," he wrote in his column for CaughtOffside. "I think this has been something that's been ongoing probably for 12 months or more. I think the expectation from Newcastle was that it was going to be next season that other clubs were going to bid. "A lot of fans will want him to be sold abroad, but it doesn't work like that. If the player says that they're going to down tools unless you let me go to this specific club, it's very, very difficult for the club." The addition of Ekitike pushes Liverpool's total summer outlay beyond £265m, and should Isak arrive, the overall investment would likely top £400m. Collymore explained the reasoning behind the club's aggressive spending. He continued: "With Liverpool, I know that there probably will be some room for Diaz and or Nunez to go. But still, at the moment, if they were to get Isak across the line, you've got Diaz, Gakpo, Nunez, Salah, Wirtz, Ekitike, and potentially Isak. That's six top-quality front players. "So for me, it just says that Liverpool now are realising that if they're going to stay top of the Premier League, if they're going to continue to win Champions Leagues, but more importantly, win domestic leagues in the manner that Manchester City have done, they have to accept that Man City, Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal are going to continue to spend as more and more money pours into the Premier League. And I think that FSG have realised that they've got to do the same."

Manchester United finally completed a sensational move for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford earlier this month and it appears the Red Devils are ready to deal the Bees another blow Manchester United are aiming to gazump Brentford in the race for Metz wonderkid Idrissa Gueye after being left furious by the Bees. And given the hostility between the two clubs at the current time, United have threatened to make things even worse by moving for a Brentford target. According to The Sun, both sides are going head to head for Metz youngster Idrissa Gueye. The teenager has emerged as a key target for Keith Andrews this summer, who may be forced to match the French side's asking price of £15m for Gueye to fight off competition from United and Burnley. It is suggested that the London side would be willing to offer the youngster instant Premier League football, while United see him as one for the future. Gueye, 18, is a product of the Metz academy and went on to score five goals in 17 Ligue 2 appearances last term. And he now faces a decision over his future, albeit United will hope that he follows in the footsteps of Mbeumo, who was only interested in signing for the Red Devils. 'Andy Murray annoyed me with his attitude - he ruined my tennis career'
Gilles Simon was a top-10 player and won 14 ATP singles titles, but the Frenchman has revealed that his career was 'ruined' by his rivalry with Andy Murray Former tennis world No. 6 Gilles Simon openly blamed Andy Murray for ruining his professional career. In a candid interview last year, the retired French player spoke about long-time rival Murray, whose illustrious career ended after the 2024 Paris Olympics. Simon and Murray rose through the ranks together, both debuting at Grand Slam tournaments in 2005. But although they started on similar paths, Murray soon pulled ahead, securing major championships and earning recognition as one of tennis' elite. "Andy is the guy who ruined my career the most," Simon told L'Equipe in 2024. "He became the player I wanted to beat the most. I studied him a lot in the field. Because he bothered me too much, in terms of his game but also in his attitude." Simon, who never advanced past a Grand Slam quarter-final, regarded Murray as one of the sport's most naturally gifted athletes - someone who simultaneously inspired and frustrated him. "We annoyed each other," Simon said. "We played matches where we ended up telling each other about our lives!" "Playing better than him didn't guarantee victory. He could quickly adapt his game to counter you. I always say you had to beat him three times. "He always found a solution," Simon went on. "He was constantly looking for one and often ended up finding one. Whatever his choice, he always had a full awareness of what he was doing. As he is intelligent, every time it fell right. "Andy is much more gifted than we think. One of the most gifted we've ever seen. As he was above all a solid player, who ran everywhere and made no mistakes." Though their rivalry was clearly tilted in Murray's favour, Simon savoured a final, hard-earned triumph at the 2022 Paris Masters - emerging victorious in a gruelling three-set battle, one of the last professional showdowns for both players. Simon carved out a respectable career, amassing 14 ATP singles trophies. Yet it was Murray's trio of Slam wins - and his unforgettable duels with the likes of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer - that cemented his place among the sport's legends. Following four painful defeats in major finals, Murray finally clinched his first Slam at the 2012 US Open. The next year, he ended a 77-year British drought at Wimbledon, becoming the first male champion there since Fred Perry in 1936. He repeated the feat in 2016. Eventually, recurring injuries took their toll, limiting Murray's later years on tour. Still, the 38-year-old's status as one of the sport's most revered players remains beyond doubt. In retrospect, Simon's battles with Murray were marked not just by rivalry but by mutual respect. Murray drove him to elevate his game - even if he seldom came out on top. For Simon, Murray wasn't merely an opponent - he was the benchmark of greatness.
