Thomas Partey set to join new club two days before appearing in court over rape charges

Thomas Partey is due to pen a two-year deal with Villarreal after seeing his Arsenal contract expire as the Ghanaian also prepares to appear in court after being hit with several charges Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is due to join Villarreal this summer after his contract at the Emirates expired, leaving him free to seek pastures new. The 32-year-old Ghanaian has undergone a medical and is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish club, which will see him play with the Yellow Submarine until 2027. It will mark his return to La Liga having played there during his Atletico Madrid days. Partey was keen to remain in the Champions League and that was a major factor in him choosing Villarreal, who finished fifth in Spain last term. The midfielder had been linked with moves to clubs in Europe and the Middle East throughout the season. The Athletic reported that the ex-Atletico man was in talks over staying at the Emirates but an agreement could not be reached on the terms of a deal despite the two parties trying until late in the day. Partey joined the club from Atletico for £45million back in 2020 and has been part of their rise to title challengers under Mikel Arteta. All in all he made 167 appearances for Arsenal, scoring nine goals, including one in a north London derby win. Shortly after the Ghanaian's Arsenal exit was confirmed he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He denies all charges. He had been the subject of an investigation that began in February 2022. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday August 5. Arteta was asked for his reaction to the news of Partey's charges and said: "The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that. Quizzed further on whether he was confident the club has followed the right process he replied: "100%." Arsenal have made several additions in the middle of the pitch with Martin Zubimendi among their key signings. The Spanish midfielder joins from Real Sociedad after being on the club's radar 12 months ago and will assist the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. Christian Norgaard has also joined from Brentford with the Dane adding more depth to the team's midfield options. Arteta has also captured more firepower in Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon and Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. The woman has been charged with suspected sexual assault on minors and distribution of child abuse images. Meanwhile, her partner has been charged with complicity in the sexual instigation of minors. The nurse reportedly showed up at a police station to confess after several videos appeared on TikTok warning of "a scandal in a hospital in the 93rd arrondissement". She also accused her 28-year-old boyfriend of involvement when she went to the cops earlier this week. The couple allegedly shared the clips of the horrifying crimes with each other. But these videos got leaked onto social media, bringing the appalling acts into the spotlight. Videos began circulating on TikTok claiming "two people who work with infants" were mistreating infants. After these videos went viral online, the nurse reportedly went to the police to report the shocking crimes. The appalling acts are said to have taken place in December 2024 and January 2025. And these clips have viscerally angered many people in France, with protesters making their way to the hospital on Saturday. Furious demonstrators entered the premises and demanded an interview with management, Actu Paris has reported. Families were among those who protested at the hospital. But the demonstrators were peacefully evacuated from the building without their request being granted. Two victims have reportedly been identified following analysis of the videos. The nurse, who has since been suspended from her role, reportedly indicated to cops that she had filmed the abuse and sent it to her partner. Both suspects have appeared before court since being taken into police custody. They have been placed under judicial supervision, despite the prosecution requesting pre-trial detention. An investigation into the events is ongoing. The Grand Paris Nord-Est territorial hospital group said on Friday that "this nurse worked exclusively in the neonatal intensive care unit of the Montreuil hospital", Le Monde has reported. Hospital management added that worried mothers had been calling the facility "even though they had sometimes given birth there a year ago". They said: "The actions of this nurse, if confirmed by the ongoing police investigation, are a serious personal error that the hospital strongly condemns. "They are in no way a collective service practice." The nurse was suspended as a "precautionary measure" pending the investigation. According to the Bobigny prosecutor's office, the appalling acts would have taken place in December 2024 and January 2025. While there had been speculation of a racial dimension to the alleged crime, this has been denied by the prosecutor's office. "There is no racial element in the act," they said.

He is also accused of sexually assaulting a third woman. Partey – who denies all the charges – was first arrested in July 2022 but not named while continuing to play for the club as investigations were ongoing. The 23-year-old is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 5. And now the ex-Premier League star is reportedly on the verge of joining Villarreal, according to The Athletic. He has undergone a medical and is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish club until 2027. Partey is a free agent after his Arsenal deal ended on June 30 and was not renewed. The former Atletico Madrid star was in talks over possibly extending his career in North London but an agreement could not be reached. Boss Mikel Arteta said he was '100 per cent' confident that Arsenal followed the correct processes regarding the club's handling of Partey. Defence Lawyer Jenny Wiltshire said: 'Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. "He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. "Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further' 2 A probe into the defensive midfielder was launched in February 2022 after officers first received a report of rape. The Crown Prosecution Service said the charge came after it "carefully reviewed a comprehensive file of evidence". Partey remained an important part of Arteta's side during 2024-25, accumulating 52 appearances in all competitions. As well as his usual defensive midfield role, Partey started at right-back during the Gunners' defensive woes last season. He scored nine goals and provided seven assists in 167 appearances since joining in 2020.
