Unseasonal summer rain cripples tourism across TN's western, southern regions
With most popular tourist destinations temporarily closed, the hospitality and travel sectors have reported heavy cancellations and dwindling occupancy rates.
In the Nilgiris, a top tourist destination during the summer months, heavy rain has continued for nearly a week.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the district until Saturday, further dampening travel plans.
"It is still raining heavily. We have closed all the tourist destinations in Udhagamandalam. Though we opened the rose garden on Wednesday, only a handful of tourists turned up," said Durga Devi, tourism officer for the Nilgiris district.
Other districts, including Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Dindigul, and Tenkasi, have also been hit by intense rainfall.
A senior official from the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department headquarters in Chennai said that bathing at the Kutralam waterfalls has been banned for three days due to flooding and slippery terrain.
"We have urged tourists to avoid visiting hilly areas until the weather improves," the official stated, adding that a full assessment of losses will be made once the rain subsides.
In Theni, authorities have also prohibited bathing at the Suruli waterfalls, while ferry services in the Kanniyakumari tourist zone remain suspended. Resumption of these services depends on improvements in weather and sea conditions.
Tour operators and hoteliers in affected areas are bearing the brunt of the weather.
M. Akbaruddin, a Chennai-based tour operator, reported that over 90 per cent of planned trips to destinations like Ooty, Coimbatore, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, and Madurai have been cancelled in the past two days.
"This applies to almost all local tour operators," he said, adding that "We're hopeful that conditions will normalise by the first week of June".

Traffic comes to standstill as rain hits city, ghat areas
Pune: Just a few millimetres of rainfall in Pune city on Friday brought traffic to a grinding halt across multiple areas including Vimannagar, Tathawade underpass, Sangamwadi bridge, Sancheti Chowk and Ghole Road, among others. Heavy to very heavy rains in ghats also caused a landslide near Borghat on the Mumbai-bound lane of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, causing extensive traffic snarls, commuters reported on X. While Pune city saw subdued rainfall activity, heavy rains continued to lash the ghat sections in Pune, Satara and Raigad, as well as the catchment areas of dams in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Friday. Humid spell on as rain plays truant, showers likely for 3 days in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: The city experienced another sultry day as rain remained elusive on Friday, accompanied by a sharp rise in temperature. The day remained muggy with a minimum temperature recorded at 29 degrees Celsius, a 3.6 degree rise from Thursday's 27.6°C. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature settled at 35.2°C, a slight drop from 36.4°C recorded the day before. According to IMD, apart from isolated showers in some places, including Karnal and Faridabad, no significant rainfall was reported in the state. However, weather officials said this dry spell is likely to be short-lived. "While the conditions are warm and humid, a fresh spell of rainfall is expected from Sunday. The intensity of rain is likely to peak on Monday and Tuesday," an IMD official said. The showers are expected to bring some relief from the prevailing discomfort, with both day and night temperatures likely to drop once the spell begins. Several areas in the city witnessed only light or scattered showers, with longer dry intervals in between. According to IMD, a western disturbance with a cyclonic circulation lies over Jammu & Kashmir and the neighbourhood. "Under this influence, light to moderate rainfall is likely over parts of the state from July 27, with isolated showers at some places. With the current dry spell, daytime temperature may see a marginal rise," the IMD official said.
