Chembarambakkam reservoir gets infrastructure overhaul ahead of Northeast monsoon
One of the five major reservoirs feeding Chennai's drinking water needs, the water body is spread over 25.51 sq.km. and now has 41.15% of its storage capacity of 3,645 million cubic feet.
Officials of the WRD said efforts to step up the reservoir storage by transferring water from other lakes have been suspended to facilitate work on strengthening the reservoir's damaged infrastructure. The project would be over before the onset of the NE monsoon.
With the largest storage capacity among the city's drinking water reservoirs, the water body has endured the onslaught of extreme weather events over the past decade.
'We have carried out temporary works to fix the damage caused by heavy rainfall episodes. But the Rs.22.95 crore project aims at providing permanent restoration of the flood-damaged infrastructure,' said an official.
Nearly 266 million litres a day (mld) of water is being pumped and treated at the Chembarambakkam water treatment plant for city water distribution. A marginal amount of water is discharged for irrigation.
Residents noted that the reservoir was a major source of groundwater recharge and still fed agricultural needs. Improving its infrastructure was essential to stave off the threat of flooding in areas along the Adyar river.
M.Elango, a resident of Chembarambakkam, said the maintenance work of the reservoir must be carried out periodically without such long breaks to withstand the impact of extreme weather events. The authorities must also take measures to arrest sewage inflow into the reservoir from neighbouring localities and Irungattukottai.
Residents also wanted inlet channels bringing water from catchment areas to be improved.
The WRD is now carrying out work to repair the damaged parapet wall on the top layer of the bund. Work is in progress to strengthen the foreshore bund. 'We will also start work in a few days to replace the stone pitching in the interior portion of the bund slope. The slope protection work will be carried out near the shutters as it was heavily affected by intense wave action during the NE monsoon during the past two years,' said an official.
The department would also construct a skin wall, an additional concrete outer layer, over the existing surplus weir structure to prevent seepage loss. Flood protection wall for a length of 120 metre near the vents would be constructed. Desilting exercise has been put off till next summer.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rains lashed parts of the state, and Rajgarh in the Sirmaur district received 72 mm of rain since Sunday evening followed by Jubbarhatti 59.2 mm, Khadrala 42.4, Pachhad 38 mm, Mandi 26.4 mm, Bhuntar 22 mm, Shimla, 18.5 mm, Dharamshala 16 mm, Shilaroo 14.2 mm, Kufri 12.9 mm, Seobagh 12.2 mm, and Rohru 10 mm. Search operations are still underway to trace the 27 who were washed away after 10 cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides wreaked havoc in various parts of Mandi on the night of June 30-July 1 and resulted in the deaths of 15 people, officials said. Keylong was the coldest at night, recording a low of 11.3 degrees Celsius while Una was hottest in the day with a high of 32.6 degrees Celsius.

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 14 (ANI): The monsoon season has continued to wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh, claiming a total of 105 lives between June 20 and July 14, 2025, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). Out of 105 deaths, 61 deaths were directly caused by rain-related calamities, including landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, fire incidents, and electrocution, as per the official cumulative report released by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) under the Department of Revenue. Additionally, 44 people lost their lives in road accidents, which have sharply increased due to the slippery terrain, poor visibility, and road damage caused by relentless rainfall. The worst-hit district remains Mandi, accounting for 17 rain-related deaths, followed by Kangra with 14 and Hamirpur with 7. Other fatalities occurred in Kullu, Bilaspur, Una, Shimla, Chamba, and Kinnaur districts. Officials also confirmed that more than 184 people have been injured, and damages worth over 784.6 crore have been reported to both public and private property across sectors including roads, agriculture, power, education, animal husbandry, and rural infrastructure. The SDMA noted 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 major landslides during this period. The authority has deployed rescue teams, and restoration efforts are ongoing in many blocked road sections and flood-hit regions. Himachal government announces Rs 7 lakh relief to house collapse victims; monsoon death toll reaches 105
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], July 14 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh government has announced a relief of Rs 7 lakh per household for those whose homes were completely destroyed in the monsoon calamity, which has claimed 105 lives in the state. 'The state government has decided to provide Rs 7 lakh to families whose houses were swept away due to floods and heavy rains. This announcement has been made by the Chief Minister,' Himachal Pradesh's Minister for Revenue, Horticulture, and Tribal Development, Jagat Singh Negi, told ANI in an interview. According to the updated SDMA report, released by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) under the Revenue Department, 61 out of the 105 deaths recorded between June 20 and July 14, 2025, were caused by rain-related disasters, including landslides, cloudbursts, flash floods, drowning, fire incidents, and electrocution. The remaining 44 deaths were caused by road accidents, which have spiked due to slippery terrain, poor visibility, and infrastructure damage from heavy rainfall. Mandi remains the most affected district, recording 17 rain-related deaths, followed by Kangra (14) and Hamirpur (7). Fatalities were also reported from Kullu, Bilaspur, Una, Shimla, Chamba, and Kinnaur. Negi also elaborated on the ongoing restoration work amid the continuing landslides that have blocked vital roads and highways. 'Over the past two to three days, repeated landslides have disrupted the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway at multiple locations, including Four Mile in Mandi and two points near Kullu. Restoration work is in full swing across the affected areas. More than 160 machines are currently deployed in Mandi district alone, with nearly 60 operational in Seraj region for clearing link roads,' he said. He added that 208 roads remain blocked across the state. Power supply and water services have also been hit, with 139 distribution transformers and around 745 water supply schemes affected. As per the SDMA report, the ongoing monsoon spell has injured over 184 people and caused estimated damage of Rs 784.6 crore to public and private infrastructure, including roads, power lines, water systems, agricultural land, animal husbandry units, and schools. The report also confirmed 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 major landslides since June 20. Rescue teams remain on alert, and restoration efforts continue around the clock. Negi urged residents to remain cautious, given the IMD's continued alerts for heavy rainfall and potential cloudburst activity. 'We are fully alert on the ground, and the public must stay vigilant as there is no certainty where a natural disaster may strike. Everyone must follow official warnings,' he said. He said the state government continues to disburse relief and ex-gratia payments to affected families. (ANI)
