BYD shares extend losses as price cuts throw spotlight on sales

Business Times27-05-2025
[HONG KONG] BYD shares extended losses in Hong Kong trading on Tuesday (May 27) – taking their two-day slide to more than 10 per cent – as last week's sweeping price cuts stoked concern of another wave of discounting in China's cutthroat electric car market.
The stock fell as much as 4 per cent in morning trading, following Monday's 8.6 per cent drop. The sell-off was sparked after the electric vehicle giant announced cuts of as much as 34 per cent on 22 electric and plug-in hybrid models in China until the end of June.
The move came after the company last month posted its slowest year-on-year growth in vehicle deliveries in more than four years. While April sales rose 21 per cent from a year earlier, that was the smallest monthly gain since August 2020, except for a drop in deliveries in February last year, when the Chinese New Year holiday saw nationwide industry sales contract 22 per cent.
Rival Geely Automobile Holdings's compact hatchback Xingyuan last month became the top-selling model in China, overtaking BYD's popular Seagull, according to data from the China Automotive Technology and Research Center.
Morgan Stanley analysts said the price competition sparked by BYD is likely to drag on, with ripple effects into the second half of the year.
The steep price cuts have taken some of the gloss off what has so far been a stellar year for BYD. The stock hit a record high last week, it posted its best month of sales in China and outsold Tesla in Europe for the first time in April, and raised HK$43.5 billion (S$5.5 billion) in a Hong Kong share sale in March.

Before this week's slide, BYD Hong Kong-traded shares had surged almost 75 per cent this year, and with a market value equal to around US$158 billion, is bigger than Ford Motor, General Motors and Volkswagen combined.
On the technology front, it has unveiled a lineup of cars it says can charge in five minutes, and started to make its God's Eye advanced driver-assistance system standard in vehicles priced from 100,000 yuan (S$13,900) and include it in several lower-cost models such as the popular Seagull hatchback.
Some of the recently discounted models include those equipped with God's Eye.
Investors will get more insight into how BYD is tracking when monthly sales for May are released on Sunday. BLOOMBERG

China's Chery denies improper subsidy declarations

SHANGHAI - Chinese automaker Chery on July 12 denied assertions that it had improperly claimed government subsidies for environmentally friendly vehicles. An audit by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology disqualified declarations by Chery and BYD for a combined US$53 million (S$67.8 million) in government subsidies for thousands of vehicles sold in the five years to 2020, accounting for nearly 60 per cent of such improper claims. Chery denied its declarations were improper. It said in a statement it had previously consulted the authorities about the challenges of missing receipts because the cars were sold more than five years ago and that the government had advised the company to declare the cars for the ministry to determine if they should be qualified. 'Our company has truthfully reported to the authorities we did not collect certificates for end sales; there's no fraudulent act,' Chery said in the statement. The government's assertions do not include allegations of fraud. EV maker BYD did not respond to requests for comment. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Chery had 7,663 vehicles disqualified - 19 for mileage thresholds and 7,643 for not providing certificates. The audit documents did not lay out any penalties or mention reimbursement. The government has previously said automakers will have to repay subsidies for vehicles found not to have met mileage requirements. Chery said the audit covered declarations for subsidies that were not prepaid and thus automakers did not need to repay. REUTERS

CGSI downgrades Grab to ‘hold' with earnings growth expected to slow in H2

[SINGAPORE] CGS International (CGSI) has downgraded its rating on Grab Holdings to 'hold' from 'add', anticipating a slowdown in earnings growth in the second half of 2025 amid forecasts of weaker consumer spending. In a report released on Thursday (Jul 10), analyst Jacquelyn Yow said she expects the slowdown in earnings to be especially pronounced in Grab's delivery business. This comes despite a forecast gross merchandise value (GMV) of US$3.4 billion for Q2 2025, which would translate to growth of 9 per cent quarter on quarter and 19 per cent year on year. The increase was attributed to a rebound after a seasonally weaker Q1 2025, due to the Ramadan fasting period and holidays such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. Yow also pointed to 'good advertising revenue' as another reason for the growth. For Q2 2025, CGSI predicts the revenue of deliveries segment will grow 7 per cent quarter on quarter and 25 per cent year on year, to US$445 million. Despite the increase in revenue, the brokerage expects a slight margin compression in the deliveries segment in Q2 2025. Yow cited Grab's strategy of driving top-line growth through lower-margin offerings such as 'Grabfood For One' and 'Shared Saver', which attracts users amid weaker consumer sentiment. Yow expects the mobility segment's GMV to grow to 3 per cent quarter on quarter and 17 per cent year on year, to US$1.86 billion in Q2 2025, noting the increase in active drivers returning after Ramadan and Chinese New Year. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up This increase in GMV will translate into higher revenue growth in the quarter, with revenue being estimated to grow by the same percentages to US$290 million. Strong earnings Grab's financial services segment was noted as the key area of positive development, with CGSI forecasting revenue from this segment to jump 20 per cent quarter on quarter and 50 per cent year on year. This growth is supported by deeper GrabFin lending penetration among Grab's ecosystem partners and users, along with higher loan disbursement growth for the digital banks. Despite the downgrade in rating, CGSI increased its forecast earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) for Grab by 6 per cent, citing narrowing losses for the financial services segment on the back of rollouts of more credit products in H2 2025. This brings Grab's overall adjusted Ebitda forecast to US$104 million in Q2 2025, which represents a 2 per cent decrease quarter on quarter, and a 63 per cent increase year on year. However, Yow noted that this forecast is still below Bloomberg's consensus of US$109 million. CGSI's target price for Grab remains unchanged at US$5.20. 'We believe the current share price has already priced in the strong double-digit GMV growth guidance,' said Yow. 'Furthermore, we do not anticipate any near-term upward revision in adjusted Ebitda guidance from management.' Shares of Grab were down 1.4 per cent, or US$0.07, at US$4.92 as at 4.30pm on Friday.

BYD Sealion 6 review: A long-distance relationship

[KUANTAN] Straight after a four-day, 1,200-km road trip in Malaysia, I rushed home and smooched the wife, as married men are wont to do. 'Is that a car key in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?' she asked, with a glimmer in her eye. To my total consternation (and her bitter disappointment), it was the key to a BYD Sealion 6 DM-i that was now sitting at Vantage Automotive. Maybe I'd subconsciously separated the Sealion 6 from its key because I felt the car deserved a bit of rest, after hauling me through half of Malaysia. That beats my wife's theory, at least, that I had it on me because I am, in her words, a 'forgetful git'. In any case, there is no rest for BYD and its five dealers this year. Having registered 3,827 new cars here in the first five months of the year, the brand has set itself a target of 10,000 sales for 2025. To hit that, it needs the Sealion 6 to succeed where no one else has. The five-seat crossover is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with a 18.3 kWh battery that can propel it for a claimed 80 km. When that runs low, a 1.5-litre engine fires up to generate electricity and keep things moving. It also helps the front-mounted motor shove the car along, if needed. That makes the Sealion 6 a kind of gateway electric vehicle (EV). The average driver here can do two days on battery power, then recharge and repeat. And when the mood strikes, long road trips are a simple matter of heading out the door with your bags and passport. A NEWSLETTER FOR YOU Friday, 2 pm Lifestyle Our picks of the latest dining, travel and leisure options to treat yourself. Sign Up Sign Up To prove the point, BYD handed a convoy of cars to the media and sent us glamping in Janda Baik, climbing the steep hairpins of cloud-covered Genting Highlands and skimming across the country to Kuantan, before trotting back to Malacca for a bit of culture. None of the six cars made it to 900 km before needing fuel, which is disappointing. Between the 60-litre tank and BYD Blade Battery under my bum, I was expecting to at least match BYD's range claim of 1,100 km. Some plain hybrid cars without plug-in technology can go that far, after all. But then they generally don't feel like EVs to drive, which is the Sealion 6's trump card. It gets underway with a smooth, silent surge, and unless you're really going for it or heading up Genting's steeper sections, you won't notice the engine waking up. To be sure, 8.5 seconds to 100 kmh isn't slow, and the instant response to the accelerator pedal makes you feel well armed for the cut-and-thrust of daily traffic. Between the leisurely steering and the general refinement, the Sealion 6 isn't a sporty car, but it's an excellent cruiser. Long days behind the wheel were a breeze, thanks to a quiet cabin, cushiony ride quality and chairs that felt like upholstered marshmallows. That said, it's not quite as plush as the Sealion 7, the newer, pure-electric crossover that has quietly become BYD's best-selling car here. Unlike that car, the Sealion 6 has no head-up display, memory seats or supple Nappa leather. But the Sealion 6 does come with a glass roof (with an actual sunshade), powerful air-conditioning, a sharp 360-degree parking camera and proper mirroring for both Apple and Android phones. It's roomy, too. The back seat is family-ready, and the 574-litre boot swallowed four journalists' gear without bursting at the seams. I'd have liked bag hooks and somewhere to stash the luggage cover, but if you ask me, the Sealion 6's biggest challenge is pricing. As a PHEV, the Sealion 6 qualifies for just S$2,500 in pollution rebates, while the electric Sealion 7 enjoys a S$40,000 discount. That means the Sealion 6 will cost slightly more than the Sealion 7, despite being older, slower, less refined and not quite as posh. That sort of maths might explain why PHEVs have never taken off here. Only about 200 of them found homes in 2024. Still, with EVs all the rage now, PHEVs might catch some of that buzz, and the Sealion 6 is very much for anyone keen on an electric car but not quite ready to break up with Big Oil yet. Yet, given that other plug-ins offered the same proposition to little success, the Sealion 6's mission isn't to conquer the PHEV market, but to establish it.
