Welcome to Google AI Mode! Everything is fine.
But here's a better sitcom analogy for the event that added AI Mode to all U.S. search results, whether we want it or not. It's The Good Place, in which our late heroes are repeatedly assured that they've gone to a better world. A place where everything is fine, all is as it seems, and search quality just keeps getting better.
Don't worry about ever-present and increasing AI hallucinations here in the Good Place, where the word "hallucination" isn't even used. Forget about the one live demo (among a dozen prerecorded ones) that went spectacularly wrong, where two presenters failed to translate each others' words via their Google AI glasses. Responsible AI, the focus of Google I/O 2023, went unmentioned.
Skyrocketing AI data center usage contributing to global warming? In the Good Place, Google AI is fighting global warming by helping to pinpoint wildfires. Don't think too hard about that one.
And as for that whole Hollywood strike that lasted nearly a year, largely over creatives' concerns about studios using AI? Fuggedaboutit. Creative folk love AI in the Good Place — just listen to the testimonials from the filmmakers and musicians Google has cherry-picked!
Meanwhile, SEO experts warn, search results continue to get worse with AI Mode-style overviews. According to internal memos obtained in the ongoing Department of Justice lawsuit, which the DOJ just won, Google has a perverse incentive to make them that way.
"If users don't get what they want the first time, they have to search again," says Lily Ray, VP of SEO Strategy at Amsive, and the author of a recent viral LinkedIn post, Google AI Overviews Have a Major Spam Problem. "So if you're serving them multiple AI overviews because they have to search multiple times, Google can then say 'we have more people using AI every day.' It's like, 'yeah, but there's no way to turn it off.'"
Or to put it in the plot-pivoting words of The Good Place's Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell): "Wait a minute. This is the Bad Place!"
Google has a roughly 90 percent share of the search market, after all; it can afford to make the product worse by using AI so long as investors keep juicing the stocks of AI-heavy companies. It can pretend to look like the Good Place for search, while under the hood it's anything but.
Like Eleanor Shellstrop, however, users know what's up. Google search results have "kind of become the laughingstock of the Internet," Ray says. "Whenever Google communicates about AI Overviews, they say 'our users really love it.' But then when you read Google Forum, it's always like 'how do I turn this thing off, I want Google search back.'" (Even turning AI search off, according to one Google Forum user, doesn't turn it off.)
As in The Good Place, this awareness may not do a lick of good. If investors continue to reward Google for frothy presentations filled with cool-sounding AI features, there's no incentive for quality control. As often appears to be the case in 2025, we have to get used to living in separate realities.
So users may breathe a little easier knowing that Google stock fell by 1.5 percent in the aftermath of I/O (and is down 12 percent in 2025 as a whole). Is that enough to nudge the company to pay attention?
It would take Google I/O levels of Pollyanna optimism to think so. Instead, let's draw our attention to a Good Place fact you won't find easily in AI Mode. It took demon Michael (Ted Danson) 300 years to stop resetting Eleanor's memories every time she realized she was in the Bad Place.
So, only a few hundred years to go before Google is working for us again. Everything is fine.

Google Confirms Gmail Warning—You Must Upgrade Your Account
Gmail is under attack and most accounts are vulnerable. All 2 billion users are urged to upgrade the security on all accounts to stop attackers gaining access. It takes moments, but only a small percentage have done so. If you have a Gmail account, do this today. Google warns 'attackers are intensifying their phishing and credential theft methods, which drive 37% of successful intrusions.' But Google also says 'less than 30%'of users are moving away from these vulnerable 'legacy methods' to sign into accounts. Put simply, this means the security on most Gmail accounts is open to attack. While Google pushes account holders to use 'Sign in with Google' where they can, leveraging the same kind of cross-platform, cross-device trusted ecosystem that binds Apple's walled garden together, you can also use a passkey instead of a password. If you're a Workspace user, Google confirms passkey support is now available to 'more than 11 million' organizations. If you're a regular Gmail user, then you can likely add a passkey on your PC, tablet or smartphone and sync between devices where available. Google's latest research found that 'most people — including Generation X, Baby Boomers and many Millennials — still rely on older sign-in methods like passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA). Over 60% of Gen X and Baby Boomers still use passwords as their primary sign-in method.' These are not good stats. 'Unlike passwords,' Google explains, 'which can be guessed, stolen, or forgotten, passkeys are unique digital credentials tied to a user's device.' Even so, less than a third of even tech-savvy Gen-Z are 'more likely to use passkeys.' The benefits of doing so are clear-cut. 'Passkeys are inherently phishing-resistant,' Google says. 'Users cannot be tricked into handing over passkeys to a malicious actor. Signing in with passkeys is as simple as unlocking your device, such as using a PIN or biometrics such as a fingerprint or facial recognition. And, 'unlike passwords,' each passkey is unique and generated for each specific website or service.' When you add a passkey to your Google account, you are 'opting in to a passkey-first, password-less sign-in experience.' You should also ensure that you have strong two-factor authentication in place, in case you ever need to use your password again. So the best advice is to shore up other security settings at the same time you add a passkey. Clearly, linking your account security to your device security means anyone who has your device code can use your passkeys, bear that in mind. When I first pointed out that most Gmail users need to upgrade their accounts, Google told me the advice was right but needed to go further. This security upgrade should be applied to all accounts. The top One UI 8 features that have eased my Samsung Galaxy experience
Samsung pulled an Apple earlier this year with the launch of its latest smartphone software. Merely weeks after Google introduced Android 16 ahead of its usual annual schedule, Samsung also dished out its next-gen One UI 8 software based on Android 16. At the moment, the software is limited to Samsung's seventh-generation foldable phones. I have been testing it for a couple of weeks now on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and a few of the changes have stood out for me. Dive in to see what Samsung has fixed and lifted this year. The improved multi-tasking experience When it comes to multi-tasking, the One UI experience has remained one of the best out there historically. But as more form factors, such as foldable, evolved and Google started paying serious attention to large format screens with Android 12L, Samsung's software started to feel stagnant. Recommended Videos The likes of OnePlus surprised us with the handy Open Canvas system for split-screen multitasking on foldable phones, while Vivo delivered what appears to be a Stage Manager-like approach on its latest foldable phone. With One UI 8, Samsung is finally catching up. The change in question is a 90:10 split-screen format, and it's ideal for using two apps simultaneously on the cover screen. Simply put, when you split the screen across the interface of two apps, the secondary app window can be shrunk to such an extent that it only takes up a 10% portion of the screen alongside the top or the bottom edge of the screen. That leaves you with more space and an almost natural view for the foreground app. It is further helped by the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold 7's tall aspect ratio still keeps the slightly shrunk app window feel completely normal, without any weird UI distortion. More importantly, you don't have to adjust the horizontal divider bar every time you want to bring the secondary app into focus. You can simply tap on the bottom or top bar, and it will instantly take the center stage on the phone's screen. It's snappy, more convenient, and thoughtfully executed. I often run into scenarios where I have to reference information in one app and then feed into another. This approach lets me interact with either split-screen app in near full view on the Galaxy Z Fold 7's cover display without any odd cropping or crushed UI elements. A more convenient camera app There's a new trend in the smartphone world these days. Phones are getting slimmer and lighter. However, they are not necessarily getting smaller. The most noticeable downside of the latter trend? Well, to reach for items in the upper half of the screen, you really need to stretch your thumb, use the other hand, or adjust the phone in your hand twice. The situation gets worse with the camera app, which needs as much space for the viewfinder as possible, especially if you are shooting in 9:16 or full-screen view. Now, imagine taking a picture when the phone is unfolded and it's being used in a tablet-like view. Well, Samsung has finally addressed that aching conundrum. So far, flicking on the viewfinder area switches between the front and rear sensor in the camera app. Now, you can customize this flick gesture to open the core camera controls and adjustment tools. Technically, these tools are still located in the upper right corner of the screen, and are still difficult to reach one-handed. But now, you can simply flick on the screen and bring them down as a sliding carousel, right above the shutter button. You can now easily toggle the flash, enable timer, change aspect ratio, adjust the resolution, change exposure settings, pick between photo styles, and do more. Even the Settings section shortcut is pulled down, letting users quickly dig into the hub. File sharing is easier Whether you have experienced the convenience of AirDrop, or not, sharing and receiving files on Android remains a hassle. Over the years, Android's Quick Share has landed some upgrades (and a rebranding, too), but it's nowhere near as seamless as Apple's wireless file sharing system. In One UI 8, Samsung has completely overhauled the user interface for Quick Share. There are now prominent Received and Send buttons at the bottom. The sending page gets a cleaner interface for selecting files. Additionally, devices that you frequently share data with, appear in a dedicated carousel. So, if these devices are nearby, you no longer have to go through the find and scan hassle. Moreover, generating a QR code or URL link is now more easily accessible on the send page, whether it's a single file or a whole bundle. When receiving files, you just have to stay put in the Receive section of the app. When you're on the Receive page, the wireless connection lanes are automatically enabled, and depending on your visibility preference, the device will appear automatically on the sender's phone or tablet. In my experience, it has worked flawlessly atop One UI 8 each time I've attempted file transfer. As usual, if Bluetooth connectivity is not working, you can choose to share the files over the internet, as well, a process that would require Wi-Fi or cellular data. Alternatively, if you want to avoid accidentally sending a large cache of files and eating up your data limits, you can set up sharing to WiFi mode only.

Google Pixel 10 vs. Pixel 9: Biggest rumored upgrades
A Google Pixel 10 vs. Pixel 9 comparison figures to reveal some substantial differences on the way. Rumors surrounding Google's upcoming phone release suggest a big change is in the works for the entry-level model that could really help it to stand out from its predecessor. Rumors about the Pixel 10 claim that an overhaul of the camera setup is in the cards. If true, it would give the Pixel 10 a significant boost in mobile photography, an area where Google has long excelled. After all, the Pixel 9 that's currently available takes great photos, but one limitation keeps it from joining the ranks of the very best camera phones. The Pixel 10 could be Google's chance to change that. Cameras aren't the only feature likely to see an update when the Pixel 10 arrives later this month. The usual round of silicon updates and battery tweaks could coming, too. Ahead of Google's August 20 launch event, here's how a Google Pixel 10 vs. Pixel 9 comparison is shaping up. History looks like it's going to repeat itself this year, with a Made by Google hardware event slated for August 20. We expect to see the new Pixel 10 lineup at that time. The Pixel 9 saw a price hike from the Pixel 8, with the cost of the phone rising to $799. The good news is that it doesn't sound like prices will continue to rise for the entry-level Pixel this year. Reports ahead of Made by Google 2025 suggest that the Pixel 10 will retain that $799 starting price. Another thing unlikely to change from the Pixel 9 involves the look of the phone — and that's a little bit of a surprise. Earlier this year, Google released the Pixel 9a, a midrange phone that ditched the distinctive camera bar that has been a part of recent Pixel models. However, multiple renders of the Pixel 10 show that camera bar is back for the flagship phone. Indeed, you'd be hard-pressed to find any differences between the look of the Pixel 10 and what the Pixel 9 currently offers. That applies to display sizes as well. Reports have the Pixel 10 featuring a 6.3-inch Actua display, matching what the Pixel 9 offered. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as the Pixel 9 delivered tremendous brightness with a reading of 1,769 nits on our light meter. We'd like to see the Pixel 10 meet or exceed that number, while maybe improving the color reproduction on its panel. As for the colors of the phone itself, current rumors have the Pixel 10 showing up in Obsidian, Indigo, Frost, and Limoncello. That compares to Obsidian, Porcelain, Winter Green and Peony for the Pixel 9. Personally, I'll be sad to see the distinctive pink Peony fall out of Google's rotation. Cameras could mark the biggest departure between the Pixel 10 and Pixel 9. Google's current phone offers dual rear cameras — a 50MP main lens and a 48MP ultrawide shooter. Those cameras could see a resolution downgrade with the Pixel 10, but reports have Google adding a third camera to the back of its new model. That would be a telephoto lens — specifically, a 10.8MP camera capable of a 5x optical zoom. According to leaker Evan Blass, Google's Super Res Zoom feature would enable that telephoto camera to provide up to a 20x digital zoom. Zoom lenses have been restricted to Pixel Pro models, which might explain the other changes Google is expected to make to the Pixel 10 camera setup. Supposedly, the Pixel 10 will now feature a 48MP main lens and a 12MP ultrawide camera. Improved video stabilization could be another Pixel 10 camera feature. Nevertheless, it's the zoom lens that figures to get most of the attention with the Pixel 10. While Super Res Zoom taps into computational photography to provide one of the better digital zooms on mobile devices, there's no beating a dedicated telephoto camera for close-ups. And as I noted in my Pixel 10 vs. Galaxy S25 comparison, the addition of an extra camera would put Google's flagship on par with what Samsung offers. An updated flagship lineup generally means new silicon inside the latest models. In the case of the Pixel 10, that figures to be a Tensor G5 system-on-chip, delivering improved performance over the Pixel 9's Tensor G4. How big of an improvement is the real question. Google is said to be switching its chip manufacturer over to TSMC from Samsung, and that could mean the Tensor G5 get built on a 3nm process. That would bunch the G5's transistors closer together, leading to big performance and power efficiency gains over the 4nm Tensor G4. With that said, not everyone expects the Tensor G5 to be a 3nm chip. But even if it remains built on a 4nm process, there should be some performance gains over the G4. And more importantly, new Tensor silicon means an updated neural engine that ushers in new AI-powered features for the Pixel 10. What those features are remains to be seen. The Pixel 9 has already received the Android 16 update, after Google rolled out its software update earlier than usual. That means the Pixel 10 would ship with Android 16 already installed. Pixel phones have historically struggled to keep up with their fellow flagships when it comes to battery life. But it sounds like Google may be taking steps to correct that. Leaked specs indicate the Pixel 10 would have a 4,970 mAh battery, compared to the 4,700 mAh power pack inside the Pixel 9. That larger capacity battery, plus any efficiency gained by the switch to the Tensor G5, should be able to help the Pixel 10 post a better score on our battery test than the 13 hour, 18 minute time that the Pixel 9 put up. For context, that time's nearly 3 hours better than the average smartphone result, though it's well short of the 15-plus hours you need to be considered among devices with the best phone battery life. Multiple leaks, including renders showing the Pixel 10 attached to a wireless charger, indicate that the new Google phone is adding magnets so that it can take advantage of Qi2 wireless charging. That could give the Pixel 10 a wireless charging boost over the Pixel 9. Typically, new AI features tell the story with Gogole's Pixel phones, as an updated Tensor processor enables new capabilities. And while that's certainly going to be a factor in the Pixel 10 vs. Pixel 9 evolution, it's the potential for an updated camera setup that really figures to set these devices apart. Apart from a Pixel 10 teaser from Google, nothing's official with the upcoming model. But from the sound of things, the August 20 hardware event could usher in some big year-over-year changes.
