Sleep problem that affects 10million people in UK could trigger world's deadliest cancer, first-of-its-kind study warns
HEAVY snorers could be at risk of the world's deadliest cancer, a shock new study has revealed.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has previously been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers.
1
Now, in a world-first trial, a "significant" link has been found between the condition and lung cancer.
US researchers, who assessed the health records of more than 2.4 million adults, say they're not exactly sure why it raises the risk.
But they believe it could be due to a lack of oxygen people with the condition get during the night - or lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity.
The findings were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago.
Scientists present urged policymakers to consider screening those with OSA for the cancer, and to tackle the condition early, soon after diagnosis.
Globally, an estimated 936 million adults aged 30-69 years are affected by OSA.
The condition occurs when the muscles in the throat relax too much during sleep, causing the airway to narrow or close, interrupting breathing.
This can happen due to several factors, including obesity, a large neck or collar size, structural abnormalities like a small lower jaw or a large tongue, and other medical conditions.
Common symptoms include breathing stopping and starting, making gasping, snorting or choking noises, waking up a lot, and loud snoring, says the NHS.
According to the Sleep Apnoea Trust, as many as 10 million people in the UK suffer from OSA – with up to four million of these suffering either severely or moderately - although it's considered to be underdiagnosed.
I'm a doctor and these 5 changes could be a sign of deadly lung cancer
It's important to note while snoring is a common symptom of OSA, it's not a guaranteed sign.
In the study, researchers at Marshall University in West Virginia tracked lung cancer diagnoses and separated those diagnosed with OSA and those without.
After accounting for different influential factors, such as age, people with OSA were found to be 1.21 times more likely to develop lung cancer compared to those without the sleep disorder.
Dr Jowan Al-Nusair, study co-author and physician at Marshall University told MailOnline it was "one of the first statistically significant studies" to prove a link between the condition and lung cancer.
She added: "While further studies are definitely now needed to investigate just how the significant the link truly is, this suggests OSA may be a preventable risk factor for lung cancer.
"We should be more closely monitoring patients with OSA. Patients would definitely benefit from screening and early intervention to combat OSA.
"Additional studies are essential to understand exactly why OSA may increase this risk.
"We really hope this will pave the way for future research and testing."
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide.
In the UK, around 35,000 people die from lung cancer each year.
The primary cause of lung cancer is tobacco smoke, accounting for the vast majority of cases.
But lung cancer cases are now rising among young people who have never smoked, with some experts attributing this to factors like air pollution.
Do you have obstructive sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea is when your breathing stops and starts while you sleep.
The most common type is called obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
Sleep apnoea needs to be treated because it can lead to more serious problems.
Symptoms mainly happen while you're asleep, they include:
breathing stopping and starting
making gasping, snorting or choking noises
waking up a lot
loud snoring
During the day, you may also:
feel very tired
find it hard to concentrate
have mood swings
have a headache when you wake up
It can be hard to tell if you have sleep apnoea.
It may help to ask someone to stay with you while you sleep so they can check for the symptoms.
If a GP thinks you might have sleep apnoea, they may refer you to a specialist sleep clinic for tests.

Annie Kilner shows off her incredible figure in a black bikini as she joins shirtless Kyle Walker after confirming they are back together on Florida family holiday
and Kyle Walker enjoyed some relaxing downtime by the pool on during a sun-soaked family holiday in Florida. The couple's relationship has made headlines as it was claimed it was 'as bad as it's ever been' after Annie, 33, served Kyle, 35, with divorce papers in October 2024. However, after enlisting their family to dog-sit back home, they then jetted off on a sun-soaked family holiday, with the Mail exclusively confirming this week that they are officially back together. With plans to divorce now in the past, the couple were seen chatting while at the pool with their kids - Roman, 12, Riaan, eight, Reign, six and five-month-old Rezon. Annie showed off her incredible figure in a plunging black bikini, which she styled with fitted bike shorts during their family day out. She fixed a pair of reflective shades on top of her raven tresses as she strolled alongside Kyle. The Manchester City ace put his toned frame and intricate tattoos on full display as he went shirtless in a pair of vibrant blue board shorts. The couple have been making the most of their time together on a five-star holiday to Disneyworld, where onlookers claimed the family seemed 'extremely happy'. They jetted off not long after Kyle returned from Italy, where he was on loan to AC Milan. This week, it emerged that the couple are back together after Lauryn Goodman told Annie that Kyle was the father of just her son Kairo, but also her newborn baby daughter Kinara. 'They are back together,' a friend exclusively told the Mail. 'This wasn't a 'make-or-break' holiday. It was a proper family trip where they were back together as man and wife. 'They flew off - leaving the dogs at home to look after the house - and they were determined to have a great time. 'Annie was obviously devastated and very, very angry about what Kyle did, so she threw him out for six months. After he moved back in they tried and tried. It was a hard process. 'Deep down, they both knew that they wanted to be together - but there were so many distractions.' Annie wore a pair of oval shades while she added another pair on top of her tresses at one point Annie had previously spotted with Kyle in Cheshire as they enjoyed a day out together after he jetted back to the UK, fuelling rumours of their reunion. Earlier, it had been claimed that Annie and Kyle's relationship was 'as bad as it's ever been', as the footballer ponders his next move following an unsuccessful spell at AC Milan. Kyle reportedly landed himself in hot water after he was seen partying with two models in Milan, prompting Annie to allegedly tell her husband to be 'incredibly careful'. The full-back is now back in the UK and according to pals had been 'barely speaking' with Annie, who was struggling to move on from the footballer's affairs with Lauryn. Kyle hoped his stint in Italy with the seven-time Champions League winners would trigger a fresh start for himself and Annie - who ended up staying in Cheshire with their kids. Being away from the 'noise' of his sex scandal was a major reason behind his hasty departure from Manchester City in January. But the Rossoneri have declined the opportunity to sign Kyle for an extra year, meaning he will now have to find another club. City boss Pep Guardiola indicated the defender has no future at the Etihad, despite having one year left on his contract. Lauryn fell pregnant with her son Kairo while Kyle was 'on a break' from Annie back in 2019, leading to him and Annie briefly separating. However, the childhood sweethearts got back together shortly afterwards and married in secret in 2022. But in the winter of that year, after another brief fling with Kyle, Lauryn once again fell pregnant with Kyle's baby and the following summer, his daughter Kinara was born. Annie then threw Kyle out of the family home two weeks later, and Kyle then spoke out about the situation, describing the relationship as 'stupid' and a 'mistake'. In turn, Lauryn hit back claim that his words were 'unimaginably cruel' towards her children, with a very public row and court case between Kyle and Lauryn following. Kyle and Annie don't yet know what their future together will bring, but Kyle is reportedly looking at offers from football teams in the UK and also Europe.

I'm a midwife born without a womb – now I'm going to deliver my own baby when my surrogate best friend gives birth
The friends first made the promise to each other at 16 OH BABY I'm a midwife born without a womb – now I'm going to deliver my own baby when my surrogate best friend gives birth Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A MIDWIFE who was born without a womb will get to deliver her own baby - after her best friend offered to be her surrogate. Georgia Barrington, 28, was diagnosed with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome aged 15, meaning she was born without a uterus and unable to ever carry a baby. When Daisy welcomed her own daughter, Emilia, three - who Georgia delivered - she offered again wanting her best pal to "experience" being a mum. Medics implanted embryos - with Georgia's extracted eggs fertilised by her partner, Lloyd Williams', 31, sperm - in Daisy and they were all delighted to find out she was pregnant on the second try in February 2025. Now 23 weeks along Georgia has been able to share every step of the journey with Daisy and will get to deliver her own baby in October 2025. Georgia, from Maidstone, Kent, said: "It was always my dream to be a mum. I was born without a uterus. I knew I couldn't carry my own baby. "At the time Daisy wasn't super maternal and said she 'I'll carry your baby' but it was kind of a joke. "But that promise always stuck." Daisy, who is a head of a school weekend programme, said: "Naively as a teen you say 'I'll carry for you'. "I was always meant to do it. At 16 I genuinely did mean it." Georgia had always felt a maternal instinct and was devastated when she was diagnosed with MRKH aged 15, and said it "felt like the end of the world at the time." Shock moment Jamie Laing and pregnant Sophie Habboo mock Meghan and Harry's dancing video - while inside Buckingham Palace Daisy had Emilia, with her partner, Oliver Millson, 30, who has a family business, in April 2022. Georgia said: "I delivered her daughter. "She told me 'you have to experience this'." Daisy said: "Emilia was only little and we went for a coffee in Costa. "I said it still stands and I want you to know I'll still carry for you." Georgia started looking into surrogacy and how to get the ball rolling - and was luckily able to get individual funding via the NHS to cover £5,000 for her egg collection and creation of embryos. "It felt a bit more affordable," she said. Georgia and Lloyd, a welder, have still had to spend £15,000 on the IVF and Georgia had her egg collection in October 2023. They had to spend the next year going through counselling and health checks before the first egg transfer in October 2024. Georgia had always wanted the moment of revealing to her partner and family she was pregnant so her and Daisy went to the appointment in secret. After 14 days Daisy got a positive pregnancy test and revealed all to her family. But at their seven-week scan they were told the baby wasn't progressing normally and at nine weeks Daisy had a miscarriage. Daisy went for her second transfer on January 31, 2025. Georgia said: "We were on FaceTime on day five and Emelia pulled out a box of pregnancy tests. "We got carried away and she did one and we saw a faint positive line." Georgia and Daisy were able to have an early scan at six weeks, where they first saw the heartbeat. Daisy's first trimester hasn't been smooth sailing and she has had episodes of bleeding - which has been worrying for them all. I was always meant to do it. At 16 I genuinely did mean it. Daisy Hope Georgia said: "Being a midwife I know too much - I see more of the unfortunate cases than the normal person. "I've been extremely anxious." But now at 23 weeks along the pals are feeling excited and more relaxed. Georgia said: "You can tell her tummy is getting bigger. Every little symptom she messages me." The baby is due in October and Georgia will get to deliver it. She said: "She's delivering in the hospital where I work, it feels surreal." Daisy added: "It's going to be magic, I can't wait to see Emilia and them be best friends. We're in this together. "If you have a loved one or someone you really cherish and you're able to do this I would definitely encourage it."

New Hampshire teen, 19, fighting for life with a broken neck after freak accident on popular beach
A 19-year-old has been left fighting for his life after he broke his neck at a popular New Hampshire beach during what was supposed to be a fun day with his cousins. Aiden Sloan went to Hampton Beach with his family on Monday afternoon to cool off from the heat when a dive into the waves changed his life forever. When Sloan dove into the water he smashed into a sandbar 'head-on,' leaving his body motionless, his mother Melina Burton told NBC10 Boston. 'They were diving into the waves like kids do. And there was a sandbar that nobody could have known was there, so he dove through a wave and he hit the sandbar head-on,' Burton said. Her son was immediately left unable to move and stopped breathing, leaving his cousins to take action. 'We looked at his eyes. They were, like, bulging out of his face,' Michael Henry, one of Sloan's cousins recalled. Henry and Sloan's other cousin, Gabriel Ruiz, then rushed over and quickly dragged him to the beach. 'He was just, like, not moving at all. It was like we were carrying a dead body,' Ruiz said. Sloan, a chef at a restaurant in Nashua - about 40 minutes outside of Concord- was left with a bruised spine, a broken neck and a concussion. He is currently in intensive care. His worried mother has been left rocked by the freak accident, especially after he told her how he struggled to make it to the surface after banging his head. 'He said "When I came to, mom, I could see the top of the water, but my arms and legs wouldn't work, and I couldn't get myself to the top to get air",' Burton recalled. She said he can't move his right leg at all, can't lift his arms and cannot wiggle his fingers or clench his hands. Burton added: 'On his left foot, he can wiggle his toes minimally. 'It's really heartbreaking to know that your child is injured and he's in pain and there's nothing that you can do for him.' Despite his grave injuries, Sloan's mother is extremely grateful his cousins were there to rescue him from the water. 'They're actually really great kids, and they're handling it so well. I did check in with both of them. Michael, the one that actually pulled Aiden out of the water, was here yesterday. And I said, "Can I give you a hug?",' Burton told Fox News Digital. 'I said, "I am so, so grateful to you for rescuing my boy and pulling him out of the water," because he probably would not even be here today if you had not done that. So I will forever be grateful.' Michael McMahon, the Hampton Beach fire chief, said he's previously dove into the very same waves as Sloan. 'He was diving into the water into the waves, I've done it a thousand times, and I think it was more shallow than he expected,' McMahon told the outlet. He noted that this wasn't the first time he was called to a similar scene, but it's not an occurrence that happens often. 'Sometimes, we go to calls and people are doing dumb things and drugs and alcohol and this was not how we saw this. This was just a kid at the beach because it was hot, and he got hurt in a terribly unfortunate way.' A GoFundMe page was created to help Sloan and his single mother after he 'misguided the depth' of the water. In an update from Friday, Burton said he has been doing physical therapy 'on his own terms' and has suffered from nightmares where he feels like he 'was drowning again.' 'He's frustrated that all he can do is lay there,' she wrote, adding that he's been enjoying the little things in the hospital, including 'a metric ton of OJ, Italian ice and ice cream. Burton said he has also been prescribed medicine for the nightmare and anxiety he's been experiencing. Sloan is currently unable to work at his job as a cook for Noodle Bar - a restaurant located in Nash Casino. As of Sunday morning, more than $37,000 was raised to help Sloan and his mother. Sandbars often cause waves to break suddenly and are known to be extremely dangerous for both swimmers and surfers. They are also known as inshore holes that are created by waves and currents pushing sand into mounds, according to OC Lifeguards. The mountains of underwater sand are also known to disappear and shift around constantly. Beach-goers are urged to exercise extreme caution in the water to avoid sandbars, whether you are swimming, surfing, diving or boating.
