Sleep problem that affects 10million people in UK could trigger world's deadliest cancer, first-of-its-kind study warns
HEAVY snorers could be at risk of the world's deadliest cancer, a shock new study has revealed.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has previously been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers.

Now, in a world-first trial, a "significant" link has been found between the condition and lung cancer.
US researchers, who assessed the health records of more than 2.4 million adults, say they're not exactly sure why it raises the risk.
But they believe it could be due to a lack of oxygen people with the condition get during the night - or lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity.
The findings were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago.
Scientists present urged policymakers to consider screening those with OSA for the cancer, and to tackle the condition early, soon after diagnosis.
Globally, an estimated 936 million adults aged 30-69 years are affected by OSA.
The condition occurs when the muscles in the throat relax too much during sleep, causing the airway to narrow or close, interrupting breathing.
This can happen due to several factors, including obesity, a large neck or collar size, structural abnormalities like a small lower jaw or a large tongue, and other medical conditions.
Common symptoms include breathing stopping and starting, making gasping, snorting or choking noises, waking up a lot, and loud snoring, says the NHS.
According to the Sleep Apnoea Trust, as many as 10 million people in the UK suffer from OSA – with up to four million of these suffering either severely or moderately - although it's considered to be underdiagnosed.

It's important to note while snoring is a common symptom of OSA, it's not a guaranteed sign.
In the study, researchers at Marshall University in West Virginia tracked lung cancer diagnoses and separated those diagnosed with OSA and those without.
After accounting for different influential factors, such as age, people with OSA were found to be 1.21 times more likely to develop lung cancer compared to those without the sleep disorder.
Dr Jowan Al-Nusair, study co-author and physician at Marshall University told MailOnline it was "one of the first statistically significant studies" to prove a link between the condition and lung cancer.
She added: "While further studies are definitely now needed to investigate just how the significant the link truly is, this suggests OSA may be a preventable risk factor for lung cancer.
"We should be more closely monitoring patients with OSA. Patients would definitely benefit from screening and early intervention to combat OSA.
"Additional studies are essential to understand exactly why OSA may increase this risk.
"We really hope this will pave the way for future research and testing."
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide.
In the UK, around 35,000 people die from lung cancer each year.
The primary cause of lung cancer is tobacco smoke, accounting for the vast majority of cases.
But lung cancer cases are now rising among young people who have never smoked, with some experts attributing this to factors like air pollution.

The most common type is called obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
Sleep apnoea needs to be treated because it can lead to more serious problems.
Symptoms mainly happen while you're asleep, they include:
breathing stopping and starting
making gasping, snorting or choking noises
waking up a lot
loud snoring
During the day, you may also:
feel very tired
find it hard to concentrate
have mood swings
have a headache when you wake up
It can be hard to tell if you have sleep apnoea.
It may help to ask someone to stay with you while you sleep so they can check for the symptoms.
If a GP thinks you might have sleep apnoea, they may refer you to a specialist sleep clinic for tests.

After 14 days Daisy got a positive pregnancy test and revealed all to her family. But at their seven-week scan they were told the baby wasn't progressing normally and at nine weeks Daisy had a miscarriage. Daisy went for her second transfer on January 31, 2025. Georgia said: "We were on FaceTime on day five and Emelia pulled out a box of pregnancy tests. "We got carried away and she did one and we saw a faint positive line." Georgia and Daisy were able to have an early scan at six weeks, where they first saw the heartbeat. Daisy's first trimester hasn't been smooth sailing and she has had episodes of bleeding - which has been worrying for them all. I was always meant to do it. At 16 I genuinely did mean it. Daisy Hope Georgia said: "Being a midwife I know too much - I see more of the unfortunate cases than the normal person. "I've been extremely anxious." But now at 23 weeks along the pals are feeling excited and more relaxed. Georgia said: "You can tell her tummy is getting bigger. Every little symptom she messages me." The baby is due in October and Georgia will get to deliver it. She said: "She's delivering in the hospital where I work, it feels surreal." Daisy added: "It's going to be magic, I can't wait to see Emilia and them be best friends. We're in this together. New Hampshire teen, 19, fighting for life with a broken neck after freak accident on popular beach
A 19-year-old has been left fighting for his life after he broke his neck at a popular New Hampshire beach during what was supposed to be a fun day with his cousins. Aiden Sloan went to Hampton Beach with his family on Monday afternoon to cool off from the heat when a dive into the waves changed his life forever. When Sloan dove into the water he smashed into a sandbar 'head-on,' leaving his body motionless, his mother Melina Burton told NBC10 Boston. 'They were diving into the waves like kids do. And there was a sandbar that nobody could have known was there, so he dove through a wave and he hit the sandbar head-on,' Burton said. Her son was immediately left unable to move and stopped breathing, leaving his cousins to take action. 'We looked at his eyes. They were, like, bulging out of his face,' Michael Henry, one of Sloan's cousins recalled. Henry and Sloan's other cousin, Gabriel Ruiz, then rushed over and quickly dragged him to the beach. 'He was just, like, not moving at all. It was like we were carrying a dead body,' Ruiz said. Sloan, a chef at a restaurant in Nashua - about 40 minutes outside of Concord- was left with a bruised spine, a broken neck and a concussion. He is currently in intensive care. His worried mother has been left rocked by the freak accident, especially after he told her how he struggled to make it to the surface after banging his head. 'He said "When I came to, mom, I could see the top of the water, but my arms and legs wouldn't work, and I couldn't get myself to the top to get air",' Burton recalled. She said he can't move his right leg at all, can't lift his arms and cannot wiggle his fingers or clench his hands. Burton added: 'On his left foot, he can wiggle his toes minimally. 'It's really heartbreaking to know that your child is injured and he's in pain and there's nothing that you can do for him.' Despite his grave injuries, Sloan's mother is extremely grateful his cousins were there to rescue him from the water. 'They're actually really great kids, and they're handling it so well. I did check in with both of them. Michael, the one that actually pulled Aiden out of the water, was here yesterday. And I said, "Can I give you a hug?",' Burton told Fox News Digital. 'I said, "I am so, so grateful to you for rescuing my boy and pulling him out of the water," because he probably would not even be here today if you had not done that. So I will forever be grateful.' Michael McMahon, the Hampton Beach fire chief, said he's previously dove into the very same waves as Sloan. 'He was diving into the water into the waves, I've done it a thousand times, and I think it was more shallow than he expected,' McMahon told the outlet. He noted that this wasn't the first time he was called to a similar scene, but it's not an occurrence that happens often. 'Sometimes, we go to calls and people are doing dumb things and drugs and alcohol and this was not how we saw this. This was just a kid at the beach because it was hot, and he got hurt in a terribly unfortunate way.' A GoFundMe page was created to help Sloan and his single mother after he 'misguided the depth' of the water. In an update from Friday, Burton said he has been doing physical therapy 'on his own terms' and has suffered from nightmares where he feels like he 'was drowning again.' 'He's frustrated that all he can do is lay there,' she wrote, adding that he's been enjoying the little things in the hospital, including 'a metric ton of OJ, Italian ice and ice cream. Burton said he has also been prescribed medicine for the nightmare and anxiety he's been experiencing. Sloan is currently unable to work at his job as a cook for Noodle Bar - a restaurant located in Nash Casino. As of Sunday morning, more than $37,000 was raised to help Sloan and his mother. Sandbars often cause waves to break suddenly and are known to be extremely dangerous for both swimmers and surfers. They are also known as inshore holes that are created by waves and currents pushing sand into mounds, according to OC Lifeguards. The mountains of underwater sand are also known to disappear and shift around constantly. Beach-goers are urged to exercise extreme caution in the water to avoid sandbars, whether you are swimming, surfing, diving or boating.
