2 Magnificent Stocks to Buy With $100 as the Bull Market Continues in August, According to Wall Street

Yahoo2 days ago
Key Points
Most Wall Street analysts anticipate big gains for Chipotle and Digital Ocean shareholders, and investors can buy a share of both stocks for less than $100.
Chipotle stock declined sharply following the company's second-quarter report, but the weak results said more about the economy than the business.
DigitalOcean simplifies cloud computing for small and medium-sized businesses, and Wall Street appears to be underestimating future earnings growth.
10 stocks we like better than Chipotle Mexican Grill ›
The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) bull market is still intact, and the index has historically moved higher in August, returning an average of 0.6% during the month since 1928, according to Yardeni Research. Of course, a long-term mindset is the surest path to success in the stock market, but there is no harm in leaning into historical trends.
On that note, Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) and DigitalOcean (NYSE: DOCN) are stocks worth buying today, according to Wall Street.
Among 38 analysts, Chipotle has a median target price of $59.50 per share. That implies 38% upside from its current share price of $43.
Among 14 analysts, DigitalOcean has a median target price of $38 per share. That implies 40% upside from its current share price of $27.
Investors can purchase a single share of both stocks for less than $100. Here's why they are worth owning.
Chipotle Mexican Grill: 38% implied upside
Chipotle reported disappointing second-quarter financial results. Revenue increased 3% to $3.1 billion, but Wall Street expected 5% growth. And non-GAAP net income fell 3% to $0.33 per diluted share. Particularly discouraging was the 4% drop in same-store sales, which itself was caused by a decrease in consumer traffic.
Same-store sales are viewed as an indicator for brand appeal and consumer sentiment, and the market was unsettled by the decline. Chipotle stock fell 9% and settled at a 52-week low after the company announced its Q2 results. But I think the market overreacted, and the sell-off creates an opportunity for patient investors.
Chipotle's same-store sales declined in this year's Q1 and Q2, but that is highly unusual. In fact, the company last reported a decrease in same-store sales five years ago following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Similar to that incident, I think the most recent drop in customer traffic was entirely due to economic uncertainty, not a loss of brand appeal.
Consumer sentiment dropped to its lowest level in three years following President Trump's tariff blitz in April, according to the University of Michigan. That coincided with weakness in Chipotle's business. But consumer sentiment rebounded in June, and Chipotle CFO Adam Rymer said that coincided with a reacceleration in consumer traffic as the company rolled out summer marketing initiatives. The rebound continued into July, which hints at better days ahead.
Going forward, Wall Street expects adjusted earnings will increase at 16% annually through 2026. That makes the current valuation of 38 times adjusted earnings look fairly reasonable. Likewise, Chipotle currently trades at 5 times sales, a material discount to the three-year average of 6.4 times sales. Long-term investors should feel comfortable buying a small position today.
DigitalOcean: 40% implied upside
DigitalOcean reported Q1 financial results that exceeded expectations on the top and bottom lines. Revenue increased 14% to $211 million, the second straight acceleration, due to strong demand for core cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) services. Non-GAAP net income jumped 30% to $0.56 per diluted share.
The investment thesis for DigitalOcean is simple: While large public clouds like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure offer a much broader and deeper range of cloud-computing services, their products are built for large enterprises with robust IT departments. DigitalOcean simplifies cloud computing for individual developers and small businesses with click-and-go options, extensive technical documentation, and 24/7 customer support.
Importantly, the company is also leaning into demand for AI, a market forecast to grow at 36% annually through 2030. DigitalOcean introduced a generative AI development platform earlier this year, which lets businesses customize foundational models to build and deploy AI agents. It also introduced an AI-powered copilot that helps businesses detect and resolve website issues.
Looking ahead, Wall Street expects the company's earnings to remain unchanged through 2026, but I think analysts have missed the mark. The International Data Corp. estimates that, among individual developers and businesses with fewer than 500 employees, cloud-services spending will increase at 22% annually to reach $250 billion by 2028.
Furthermore, DigitalOcean beat the consensus earnings estimate by an average of 25% in the last six quarters, which suggests analysts may be underestimating future earnings growth. And with the stock currently trading at a reasonable 13 times adjusted earnings, patient investors should feel confident buying a small position today.

A technical look at Wall Street's 'fear gauge' and how to hedge against potential volatility

As Fundstrat's Tom Lee says, this is the most hated bull market of all time, yet it continues to power higher. There are plenty of overhanging uncertainties that could derail this rally that I'll discuss below, but first let's talk about technical condition of this rally. This V-shape recovery-turned-rally from April lows has been unrelenting. Any minor pullbacks are bought up and those left on the sideline are still waiting for a sizable pullback to enter. It could continue to power higher leaving those on the sideline chasing momentum and entries at new highs, or, the numerous overhanging threats to this market could begin to manifest and pullback may be ahead of us. We can't know. No one knows the future. All we can do is control our process in the present and plan accordingly. To avoid the concern that we need to be able to predict the future to successfully invest in the markets, we recently deployed a VIX hedge to our Active Opps portfolio at Inside Edge Capital with a favorable risk-reward ratio. If the market does pullback the VIX hedge will provide some protection to our portfolio while we're able to hold onto the strong names we've been building here with you every Tuesday on CNBC Pro. The S & P broke out from the late 2024 highs at around 6,140 and have not yet re-tested that breakout zone as support. It's not required, but it would be nice to see this checkback to this significant technical level. Also located in this zone is the 50 period moving average (dotted purple). You'll also notice the rate of change indicator below that has been in a decisive downtrend. To use a baseball analogy as I'm running travel baseball tryouts tonight, if you throw a ball in the air the speed of ascent will decelerate until the rate of change is zero and gravity takes over and pulls the ball back to the ground. The same thing here. At some point buyers will exhaust themselves and sellers will come in. Looking at the Volatility Index (VIX) overlay with the S & P 500 you'll notice that there is a clear inverse relationship between the two. As the stock market falls, fear and the accompanying price of option insurance goes up. Home insurance on a house with a smoldering foundation is going to be a lot more expensive than a calm clear day. The VIX at 17 is still relatively cheap so insurance is still reasonable. Plus you'll notice that I've outlined a divergence between late 2024 and now. With the S & P 500 at new highs, the VIX should be sub-15, but as mentioned above there are so many overhanging threats to the market investors are buying up the insurance policy keeping the VIX somewhat elevated. Specifically, we went to the VIX September monthly call options and bought the 23 strike and then sold the 29 call. The difference between the two should be around $1.50 for that $6 spread so that means you're risking $150 to make $450 if the VIX is above 29 on Sept. 17. As mentioned, there are threats to the market that we all know about including a Fed that may not be ready to drop rates despite many calling for it, persistent inflation driven by strong demand tariff pressures, Geopolitical tensions, narrowing breadth in the market as mega-cap hyper scalers are starting to lead once again, and finally seasonality. September is historically the worst month for the S & P 500. Hopefully we won't need the hedge and will close it at a loss. But if we do need it and the market is going to pullback, we can maintain our strong portfolio and not dislodge the low cost basis of names we've been building this year. -Todd Gordon, Founder of Inside Edge Capital, LLC We offer active portfolio management and regular subscriber updates like the idea presented above. Unusual Options Volume? Why Only BP Stock Passed the Quantitative Sniff Test

With the rising popularity of equities market trading following the COVID-19 pandemic, it was practically inevitable that interest would boom toward the options space. In many ways, options represent a market within a market. Since the underlying contracts exchange hands at a fraction of the rate of the actual security, the leverage can be tremendous. At the same time, unlike securities in the open market, options expire. So while there are incredible rewards to be had, the debit that you put can be completely nuked in a busted transaction. Even worse, in a credit-based position, tail risk — which is the phenomenon where you must make good on the risk you underwrote — can potentially beat your portfolio to a pulp. The FREE Barchart Brief newsletter keeps you in the know. Sign up now! Therefore, people turn to indicators like Barchart's Unusual Stock Options Volume screener to find potential opportunities. Fundamentally, it's a smart strategy because the options market tends to be the arena of the smart money. So, if you can decipher where the most intelligent traders are putting their funds, you can potentially gain an edge over everyone else. To be sure, interpreting unusual activity in the derivatives arena is both an art and a science. Here's the rub. Even if you were the world's best expert on the financial markets, you would know instinctively that there's no way all 500 stocks identified as 'unusual' represent compelling wagers. There has to be another mechanism to sort the wheat from the chaff. I believe that energy giant BP (BP) is the only enterprise from Monday's list that passed the sniff test. Let's quickly go over the stats since this is a story about unusual options activity and all. Yesterday, BP's total options volume hit 58,533 contracts, representing a lift of 215.73% over the trailing one-month average. Call volume stood at 47,156 contracts while put volume was 11,377 contracts, generating a put/call ratio of 0.24. Again, I'm not going to be overly excited but you should know that on Monday, options flow — which focuses exclusively on big block transactions likely placed by institutional investors — showed that net trade sentiment stood at more than $1.05 million above parity. This metric favors the bulls so the above ratio could be read intuitively. Okay, with the details out of the way, I'm going to get to the good stuff. BP Stock Flashes a Statistically Significant Signal One of the common traps that you'll find in the broader financial publication space is the concept that bullish options flow (or insert any other line of reasoning, such as a cheap earnings multiple) is automatically a 'good' opportunity. However, if the analyst making the assertion fails to define what 'good' means, the argument is likely to be a presuppositional fallacy. Essentially, merely stating that bullish options flow makes BP stock a 'good' opportunity smuggles the conclusion (that BP is favorably mispriced) into the premise (that there is an objective standard in the market for what 'good' means). If you really break down the argument, it's basically stating that BP stock is good because it has bullish options flow, implying that bullish flow is good because it means BP is good. This type of circular logic — also known as begging the question — runs up and down the financial publication industry. Go read the articles and find out for yourself. Heck, read my articles before my red pill moment, which occurred around April of this year. As far as I'm aware, the only objective truth in the equities sector is that, at the end of the day, the market is either a net buyer or a net seller. It's kinesis or stasis, one or the other. Yes, this may seem like an obvious point but with this framework, we can now much more easily observe recurring patterns and their forward probabilities. For example, in the past 10 weeks, the market voted to buy BP stock four times and sell six times. Despite distributive sessions outweighing accumulative, the overall trajectory of BP was upward. For brevity, we can label this sequence 4-6-U. Now, we all understand that the probability of upside under all conditinos is not a fixed percentage. Have you seen baseball or any team sports in general? Then you know that certain players (the great ones) rise to the occasion. I want to know when BP is in clutch mode and when it's not. To do this, I need to create a decision-tree logic across 10-week intervals (in this case, going back to January 2019): L10 Category Sample Size Up Probability Baseline Probability Median Return if Up 1-9-D 8 37.50% 44.77% 1.73% 2-8-D 24 41.67% 44.77% 4.65% 3-7-D 39 56.41% 44.77% 1.37% 3-7-U 4 50.00% 44.77% 7.70% 4-6-D 63 36.51% 44.77% 2.38% 4-6-U 29 62.07% 44.77% 1.79% 5-5-D 24 33.33% 44.77% 2.12% 5-5-U 54 48.15% 44.77% 2.86% 6-4-D 7 42.86% 44.77% 2.72% 6-4-U 50 44.00% 44.77% 2.11% 7-3-U 14 14.29% 44.77% 3.15% From the table above, the chance that a long position in BP stock will rise is only 44.77%, a negative bias. This is effectively our null hypothesis, the assumption of no mispricing. In contrast, our alternative hypothesis is that because the 4-6-U sequence is flashing, the upside probability for the following week is actually 62.07%. Therefore, an incentive exists to consider a debit-based options strategy. Assuming the positive pathway, the median return is 1.79%. If so, that would imply that BP stock may poke its head above the $33 level quickly. Putting the Math to Good Work Based on the market intelligence above, a sensible idea is to consider the 32/33 bull call spread expiring Sep. 19. This transaction involves buying the $32 call and simultaneously selling the $33 call, for a net debit paid of $54 (the most that can be lost in the trade). Should BP stock rise through the short strike price ($33) at expiration, the maximum profit is $46, a payout of over 85%. However, the most aggressive traders may consider the 32/34 bull spread also expiring on Sept. 19. This trade calls for a net debit of $86, which is pricier than the 32/33 spread. However, the max payout stands at roughly 133%, which is a very tempting proposition. The breakeven for this trade is $32.86, which as mentioned earlier is a realistic target. I mentioned in the title that BP stock passed the quantitative sniff test and that's not clickbait. Running a one-tailed binomial test on the 4-6-U sequence reveals a p-value of 0.0478. This means that there's a 4.78% chance that the implications of the sequence could materialize randomly as opposed to intentionally. Scientists will scoff at this ratio and state that it barely falls under the threshold of statistical significance of 5%. Yet in the context of an open, entropic system like the stock market, this is an awfully compelling signal. No, it doesn't guarantee a positive outcome. However, the usage of Markovian principles helps to rationalize your wagers rather than depending on empirically unanchored opinions and vibes. On the date of publication, Josh Enomoto did not have (either directly or indirectly) positions in any of the securities mentioned in this article.
