Father of double Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen found guilty of hitting daughter but avoids jail

The Guardian16-06-2025
The father of the double Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen has been found guilty of hitting the Norwegian runner's younger sister, Ingrid, with a wet towel, and handed a 15-day suspended sentence.
However, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, who coached his Jakob to 1500m gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021 before an acrimonious split a year later, was acquitted of the same charges against Jakob after a court in Norway found there was 'reasonable doubt' about the accusations.
Ingrid, who left the family home aged 15 after a series of incidents, was also awarded compensation of 10,000 kroner (£744) by the court.
The verdict marks another extraordinary episode in the life of the family that became huge reality TV stars in Norway after the docu-series The Ingebrigtsens, which charted their lives and eccentric nature, became a huge phenomenon.
Prosecutors had called for Gjert to be jailed for two and a half years for what they told the court in the Norwegian town of Sagnes was a 'regime of physical and verbal abuse' towards Jakob and his younger sister, Ingrid, which spanned a decade.
It followed testimony from Jakob, who said that he had been a victim of domestic violence at the hands of his father, who had punched and kicked him as well as 'controlled' him.
Early in the six-week trial, Jakob alleged that when he was eight his father had punched him in the head 'many times' after receiving a negative report about his behaviour from school.
In another incident around the same time, Jakob claimed he had been playing in the street on a scooter when his father jumped on him and kicked him in the stomach.
The court also heard that Gjert had used threats, coercion and violence against Jakon's younger sister, Ingrid, including 'whipping' her in the face with a wet towel in 2022 after he had refused to let her play outside with friends.
In court Gjert accepted that he had sometimes been demanding while coaching his three sons, Jakob, Henrik and Filip, to major international titles.
The 59-year-old also acknowledged that he had once thrown the family PlayStation out of a second floor window after a row. However he denied all allegations of abuse and broke down in tears as he told the court that he had never hit anyone in his life.
He also admitted his regret at falling out with Ingrid, who left the family home at 15 after the towel incident.
'I miss her every day,' Gjert said. 'She is the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night, and the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning. The loss is extreme.'

Evil killer who stalked ex on Christmas Day with knife before stabbing him to death when she found his Tinder is jailed

A KILLER ex who stalked her ex through the garden before stabbing him to death after finding his Tinder has been jailed for life. Kirsty Carless, 33, plunged a knife into 31-year-old Louis Price's heart on Christmas Day in an attack "motivated by anger and jealousy". 9 9 9 The killer had called dad-of-six Louis 45 times in a 30-minute period after a pal sent her his Tinder profile. This was despite her having sex three times with a male friend she had been downing double vodka and cokes with that night. She then jumped in a taxi to Louis' home in Norton Canes, Staffordshire, armed with a kitchen knife. CCTV released by police shows Carless running up the front path to confront Louis, who she expected to find with a woman, before "stalking" him around the garden. He was later tragically discovered dead with a single stab wound to the chest in the conservatory. Carless has now been jailed for life with a minimum of 25 years after she was convicted of murder and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. She was also found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm over a previous incident, but cleared of intentional strangulation. Stafford Crown Court heard Louis was considered by police to be "at very high risk of domestic abuse". At the time of the horror, Carless was on police bail after allegedly strangling Louis in November 2024. Louis had previously told a friend he was scared of his on-off partner and believed "something bad would happen to him". One neighbour had called police after witnessing Carless chasing and hitting Louis in the ribs with a metal pole as he tried to protect his head. There was another incident where she allegedly poured bleach over his clothes and threw a shoe out of the window, which hit him on the head. 9 9 9 9 In a witness statement to police, Louis said that "on the whole", has " the relationship had been "abusive'. He added: 'She has constantly been abusive towards me, stopped me doing things I enjoy like football, and physically abused me.' In the early hours of Christmas Day, Carless and drunk alcohol and taken cocaine before she headed to Louis' parents' home. She asked the taxi driver to wait outside as she would only be a minute before she launched into the brutal attack. The killer was later captured on police bodycam sobbing as she was arrested on suspicion of murder. Carless claimed she only phoned him to see if he had taken money from inside a card at her home and went round to get the cash back. She said she had no recollection of stabbing him and was "not a violent person". Carless told the court: "I remember being in the conservatory, that was it the next thing I knew I was in the kitchen. 'Louis was sat on the floor. Then I panicked and ran off.' Carless denied murder and possessing an offensive weapon. She also pleaded not guilty to one count of intentional strangulation and one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in relation to the incident on November 11, 2024. Migrant strangled and punched his girlfriend in a brutal attack at four star taxpayer-funded hotel

A MIGRANT strangled and punched his girlfriend in a brutal attack at their taxpayer-funded hotel. Mamadou Alion Diallo, 27, lashed out at Zenabou Quedraogo at the four star Heston Hyde Hotel in Hounslow, West London. 2 Diallo, who is from Mali, has now been found guilty of intentional strangulation and assault by beating. Isleworth Crown Court heard Diallo strangled his partner on October 23. The attack came to light when police were called to the hotel following a second assault on January 4. Prosecutor Ravinder Johal said: "The argument happened in Diallo's room at the migrant hotel he lived in, in Hounslow. "Both are asylum seekers. "Neighbours in the hotel heard the victim screaming, and saw Diallo go out into the lobby. Police were immediately called. "Diallo punched the victim on the head. She was left with a massive bruise." The court heard Diallo has "moved around different countries" since leaving Mali. He is currently staying at the three-star migrant hotel, Thistle City, in Barbican, Central London. The migrant accommodation has been riddled with crime - with 41 migrants charged with more than 90 offences in the past year. Diallo was bailed ahead of sentencing at the same court on August 28. Recorder Annabel Darlow KC said: "You must attend this court on August 28. "If you fail to do so, you will commit a further separate offence, and sentence may proceed in your absence. "By adjourning, the court makes no undertaking at all that this matter won't be dealt with by way of immediate custodial sentence."
