Prayagraj: In a bid to tackle depleting groundwater levels, the Uttar Pradesh government has been actively constructing Amrit Sarovars in rural areas to conserve water. Notably, Prayagraj has set a remarkable record under the Mission Amrit Sarovar scheme by building 583 Amrit Sarovars across 23 blocks, capable of storing approximately 13 lakh cubic meters of water.
This initiative is not only enhancing water availability, but also boosting the rural economy.
Deputy commissioner (MNREGA) Gulab Chandra said, "A total of 583 Amrit Sarovars have so far been constructed in Prayagraj at a cost of Rs 28.92 crore." Additionally, 106 Amrit Sarovars are under construction in the district in the current financial year. In the selection process, Prayagraj ranks second in the state after Kannauj.
Weak monsoon has led to a decline in the district's average annual rainfall, which has dropped to around 890 mm. This, combined with changing water conservation habits, has resulted in a steady depletion of groundwater levels. However, the construction of Amrit Sarovars has helped collect 13 lakh cubic meters of rainwater. With 106 more ponds under construction, expected to store 104 crore liters of rainwater, the initiative is likely to improve groundwater levels in rural areas.
With the transparent policy and determination of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has certainly created a new identity regarding water conservation. This significant scheme of water conservation has also provided employment to rural youth and women. Women have played an active role in the excavation, beautification, and maintenance of the ponds. This campaign has not only become a means of water management, but also a means of livelihood.
A comprehensive policy was formulated to develop sustainable water resources, the effects of which are now visible, said the officials.

35 lakh school students to receive ‘Vidyarthi Mitra' kits
Vijayawada: The state government has undertaken an extensive exercise of distributing student kits called 'Vidyarthi Mitra kits' at a cost of Rs 953 crore to over 35 lakh students. To ensure the highest standards of quality, all materials provided to students have undergone a rigorous three-layer quality check by the Quality Council of India (QCI) before distribution. For the first time, the state has partnered with the QCI to conduct three-stage quality checks, covering raw materials, final production and packaging. Only those products that passed all stages were dispatched to schools. To ensure transparency, 'Quality Walls' have been set up at mandal stock points to test and display the kit items. Government school students across the state are stepping into the new academic year with pride and confidence, thanks to the distribution of the Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Vidyarthi Mitra kits. Spearheaded by education minister Nara Lokesh, the initiative has brought a fresh look to classrooms, along with renewed energy and enthusiasm among students. Designed to ensure an equal start for every student, the kits include uniforms, shoes, belts, socks, school bags, textbooks, notebooks, workbooks, and Oxford dictionaries — all of high quality and presented in attractive, student-friendly colors. Significantly, this is the first time that government-provided kits are free from political branding. The kits have been renamed after India's second President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Under the previous YSRCP government, the kits were branded as Jagananna Vidya Kanuka and featured images of the then chief minister. This was widely criticised for exposing schoolchildren to political influence and using government material to do political publicity. This year, the government has distributed these kits to over 35.94 lakh students from Classes 1 to 10 across government and aided schools. With a total budget of Rs 953.71 crore — Rs 778.68 crore from the state and Rs 175.03 crore from the Centre — each kit is valued at approximately 2,279. The government has also borne the stitching charges — Rs 120 for Classes 1–8 and Rs 240 for Classes 9–10 — ensuring uniforms are ready to wear. As part of the initiative each student received three sets of uniform cloth in new colours (olive green pants/gowns and light yellow-green striped shirts), one pair of shoes, two pairs of socks, a belt, and a school bag, textbooks, workbooks, and notebooks, an Oxford English-English-Telugu dictionary for Class 6 students, pictorial dictionaries for Class 1 students and dictionaries in regional/minority languages like Urdu, Tamil, and Odia where needed With transparent online tenders through the e-procurement system, the government saved Rs 63.80 crore compared to previous years.

BBMP spends Rs 1.48 crore on caste survey so far, Rs 70L on stickers alone...
BENGALURU: Has BBMP spent a whopping Rs 1.48 crore on the survey of SC population in its limits so far? Yes, according to sources in the Palike. It has spent Rs 70 lakh on stickers alone and Rs 28 lakh on raising awareness on the survey through social media platforms. According to Suralkar Vikas Kishore, nodal officer, the projected estimation for stickers, distribution of pamphlets and engaging workers is Rs 1.75 crore. The survey cost may touch Rs 3 crore by the time it is completed. BBMP has launched an elaborate campaign to raise awareness on the survey of SC population through street plays, short films, social media, IEC and other platforms, Kishore said. Sources in the BBMP said that it cost Rs 28 lakh to register 60 lakh views for its two short films on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and other social media platforms. 'Including 18% GST, the palike's spending will be around Rs 49,56,000. It cost Rs 12 lakh to the Palike to hire a camera, cameraman, scriptwriters, voice-over artistes and music,' according to a source. However, many have expressed their reservation over the genuineness of the survey, going by the manner in which it is being conducted and money spent. In many places, enumerators have pasted stickers on doors without collecting details from people living in houses. Incidents of clashes between enumerators and occupants of the houses have also been reported. Seven revenue officials, who were part of the survey, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.
