De Minaur battles past Tiafoe into Toronto Masters quarter-finals

The Sun2 days ago
ALEX de Minaur continued his strong form by defeating Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals of the ATP Toronto Masters. The Australian, fresh off his Washington title win, extended his winning streak to seven matches in a gruelling encounter lasting just under two and a half hours.
De Minaur, the ninth seed, will next face the winner of the match between Italian Flavio Cobolli and American fourth seed Ben Shelton. Despite the victory, the Australian voiced concerns over the new 12-day Masters schedule, which has disrupted player routines. 'I didn't enjoy having so much time off. The body is used to going and going,' he said.
The match saw nearly 50 unforced errors from Tiafoe, with De Minaur overcoming a mid-match slump in the second set. 'It was never gonna be easy. He's got the ability to switch it on whenever he wants,' De Minaur admitted. 'I was just happy to sneak away with this win.'
Meanwhile, sixth seed Andrey Rublev secured his 14th Masters quarter-final after Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired at 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/2), 3-0 due to possible cramping. Rublev, last year's runner-up in Montreal, will face either Jiri Lehecka or Taylor Fritz next. - AFP

Soccer-Serie A referees to announce VAR decisions live in stadiums

(Reuters) -Serie A referees will begin announcing VAR decisions live in stadiums and on television starting next season, referee designator Gianluca Rocchi told Italian media on Tuesday. Rocchi described the move as a significant step forward in communication between referees and the public, saying the aim was to make officiating decisions quicker and clearer. "We have a select group of officials and we want to ensure the language is as uniform as possible so that decisions can be clear to the public," Rocchi said. The concept of referees explaining decisions to the crowd has also been explored in countries including England and Germany. The Serie A season kicks off on August 23. Motor racing-Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren's Brown

REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File Photo LONDON (Reuters) -Cadillac's arrival in Formula One next year as an 11th team will bring added financial value with new partners and more fan engagement rather than diluting resources, according to McLaren's American chief executive Zak Brown. The General Motors-backed team have taken staff already from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are also competing for sponsorship. Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources, however. "I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine," he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "My general view is if someone wants to go work for a rival team then shame on me. "For sponsors, I think they'll bring more new to the table than take." Brown expected Cadillac also to bring more competition eventually, although they faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that now has three U.S. rounds and a growing audience in America. "Will we get a better U.S. TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport, the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport," he added. "I'm not worried about maybe some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that." Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March, after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The first new team since U.S.-owned Haas debuted in 2016 said in July they were already two thirds of the way towards a targeted headcount of 600 by next season and no longer even the smallest outfit. Paris Seine swimming draws 35,000 despite rainy July

THREE Seine swimming sites in Paris have attracted more than 35,000 visitors since opening in early July, despite frequent summer rainfall, city officials confirmed. The historic return of public swimming to the river marks the first time in over a century that Parisians and tourists have been able to bathe in the Seine following a massive cleanup effort. Wet weather forced temporary closures for 13 days in July, including one site near the Eiffel Tower. 'We knew that the weather would be a variable factor,' said city official Pierre Rabadan. 'But we are extremely satisfied.' The 19th-century sewage system often overflows during heavy rain, sending wastewater into the Seine. However, a new retention basin has successfully prevented overflow this summer. Despite initial delays, enthusiasm remains high, with a record 5,700 swimmers on July 13. The initiative stems from Paris' Olympic legacy, where triathletes and open-water swimmers competed in the cleaned-up river. Authorities invested €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion) to improve water quality ahead of the Games. The free swimming spots will remain open until August 31. - AFP
