VE Day 80th celebrations in North Yorkshire
People across North Yorkshire are being encouraged to join in the celebrations and commemorations, with York's City Walls lit in red, white and blue from Monday 5 until Thursday 8 May.
Pete Kilbane, executive member for economy and culture at City of York Council, said: "The end of the war in Europe is a moment to celebrate. It also reminds us of the sacrifices people made so that we can be free today.
"So let's come together in our streets, communities and workplaces and mark this 80th anniversary."
On 8 May, the Royal British Legion Scarborough branch will hold a service of prayers and wreath-laying in Alma Square from 11:00 BST.
On 10 May, there will be a cocktail reception and formal lunch at Middlethorpe Hall & Spa near York from 12:30 BST.
The four-course meal will have a "Dig for Victory" theme, using produce from the venue's own gardens and local farmers.
It will be accompanied by live music from York's Celebration Singers.
St Wilfrid's Garrison Church in Strensall will be hosting a concert by York Railway Institute Band and the York Military Wives Choir.
The event, at 19:30 BST on 8 May, will feature old and new songs that evoke memories of 1945, concluding with a Last Night of the Proms-style finale.
Tickets are priced at £10 per adult and £5 per child.
Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington will hold celebrations on the weekend of 10 and 11 May.
The museum said its "We'll Meet Again" weekend would be its "big event of the year", featuring reenactors in 1940s dress, who will be giving demonstrations and talks, with vintage vehicles on show and tables and chairs set out for a street party.
On 8 May, Ripon Cathedral will be hosting a VE Day anniversary proms, with children from a local school giving readings. Tickets are £15.
Ripon City Council will host a free event in the market square from 18:00 to 21:30 BST, with live music, a climbing wall, vintage games and family friendly activities.
And on Sunday 11 May, there will be a traditional parade through Ripon for the Installation of the new Mayor of Ripon at Ripon Cathedral.
There will also be a performance of stories of Yorkshire Normandy veterans, as told by Ripon Theatre Festival and the Ripon Community Poppy Project, at Lister House.
On 1 May, York Army Museum will launch its Remembering Victory in Europe exhibition showcasing regiments and the home front in York.
There will be live performances at 17:00 and 19:00 BST on 8 May telling the stories of two of York's Normandy veterans.
On 10 May the museum will host a dramatisation offering an insight into the lives of prisoners of war, and highlighting the ethnic diversity of the veteran community.
On 8 May, York Minster will host a special Evensong commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day, starting at 17:30 BST.
On 8 May at 18:00 BST, Knaresborough Castle will host themed entertainment including performances from local musicians, bands and dance groups.
Members of the Knaresborough Branch of The Royal British Legion, Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps will parade in the castle grounds and lead attendees to gather at the War Memorial for prayers of remembrance.

Two local culinary icons have once again teamed up to create a buzzy, limited-time mashup. Starting today, July 16, folks can order a Chicago-style hot dog deep-dish pizza at 21 full-service Lou Malnati's restaurants across the country. The pizza chain worked with Portillo's to marry two of the city's most famous foods. The Chicago Dog Deep-Dish will be available for 30 days and is only offered in the small size. Here's the lowdown on the recipe: The pie starts with layers of mozzarella, canned plum tomatoes, and diced tomatoes — but no ketchup, of course — before being topped with slices of Portillo's hot dogs, sport peppers, pickles, white onions, and celery salt. The dough is infused with poppy seeds, akin to a hot dog bun, and after it comes out of the oven, the pizza is finished with green relish and drizzles of yellow mustard. To celebrate the launch, Lou Malnati's is giving away free slices while supplies last, starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, outside its Gold Coast location at 1120 N. State Street. Lou Malnati's and Portillo's previously partnered together for an Italian beef deep-dish pizza in 2022, which was only sold online and shipped frozen. It's not the first hot dog/deep-dish combo — Giordano's served one at Wrigley Field. Portillo's, once a local chain, is owned by an East Coast investor group. Malnati's, which is still family-owned, is also seeking to expand its national footprint and has hired a new CEO who's worked at Domino's, Auntie Anne's, and Potbelly. A sushi standout is making a comeback in Logan Square Jinsei Motto will return this fall in Logan Square. Crain's reports that the restaurant will take over the former Testaccio and Soif spaces at 2456 N. California Avenue. $60 million entertainment complex in Madison goes before zoning board. Was it approved?
The arts and entertainment district known as The Gallery passed its latest test before a board in Madison, on Tuesday, July 16. The City of Madison Planning and Zoning Board as well as the Board of Aldermen gave The Gallery a vote of approval to move forward. The Gallery is a privately funded, mixed-use destination that will include entertainment, dining, retail and office space in a designed community space, Work has begun on the Madison development project, located off Galleria Parkway on 17 acres visible from I-55 North. A local development group on April 22, announced intentions to build a $60 million arts and entertainment district for Madison. Ground has been broken on the economic development project, and now the city has given its blessing. "Securing approval for The Gallery: Arts and Entertainment District marks a major milestone not only for Bellamare Development but for the entire community," Chad Phillips, Senior VP, President of Bellamare Development Services, Bellamare Development, told the Clarion Ledger. "This project represents a bold vision to transform a major commercial thoroughfare, into a vibrant hub for culture, creativity, and commerce. We're honored to help shape a destination where people can live, work, and be inspired — and we're grateful to city leadership and the community for believing in this vision. The real work begins now, and we're excited to bring this district to life." Located off Galleria Parkway on 17 acres visible from I-55 North, The Gallery is a privately funded, mixed-use destination that will include entertainment, dining, retail and office space in a designed community space. "For years, Madison residents have voiced a clear desire: more local entertainment, more family-friendly spaces, more opportunities to gather," Phillips said. "The Gallery is designed with Madison families in mind — to elevate everyday life and offer something truly special, right here at home." At the heart of the project is Spinners, a 120,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor family entertainment center featuring bowling, skating and other games. While there is another Spinners location in Florence, Phillips told the Clarion Ledger the new location is much different and larger in scale. Just steps away from the entertainment venue will be what will be called Royal Street. It will be a French-inspired, New Orleans-style walkable area lined with local restaurants, boutique retail and upstairs office space. The focus, according to Phillips, is to support small businesses and create an environment that feels "charming and modern." Phillips said Bellamare is already in negotiations with multiple restaurant groups to bring dining options to Royal Street and will be prepared to announce those in the upcoming months. "It marks the beginning of an exciting journey, and we're excited to share that the first two buildings on Royal Street are already pre-leased with an incredible mix of restaurants, retail and office space," Phillips said. "We can't wait to reveal the standout businesses and concepts that will soon call The Gallery home.' The development is being designed and engineered by Mississippi-based partners, including WBA Architecture and MP Design Group. Groundbreaking is expected by fall 2025, with construction beginning shortly after. The project is privately funded, with no taxpayer dollars being used. Phillips said he expects much of the work will be complete by the Fall 2026. The 17 acres visible from I-55 North are part of 70 acres total that Bellamare owns along that tract. What comes next for the property is still to be decided. "This process will be dictated by what will be needed and the people of Madison tell us they want," Phillips said. "People riding down I-55 are going to begin seeing work done very soon. This project is ready to go, and I am excited for what this brings to Madison. Our focus all along is a family friendly environment that works for both kids and parents."
