Laser light ban imposed near Karachi's Jinnah Airport over aviation safety concerns
Authorities have imposed a complete ban on the sale and use of laser lights in the vicinity of Jinnah International Airport in Karachi for two months, citing aviation safety concerns.
According to a notification issued by Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi, the restriction falls under Section 144 and will be enforced from 6 May to 5 July 2025.
The decision comes in light of growing concerns over the dangers posed by laser beams during aircraft take-offs and landings at Jinnah Airport.

The notification warns that laser lights can severely impair pilots' vision, potentially leading to catastrophic air incidents.
'Laser beams may affect pilots' eyesight, especially during critical moments such as landing and take-off, increasing the risk of aviation accidents,' the document stated.
In response to the notification, local police stations have been instructed to take immediate action against any violations.
The ban extends to all areas surrounding the city's airports and is aimed at preventing disruptions to air traffic and ensuring passenger safety.
Officials emphasised that the temporary prohibition is necessary to safeguard pilots and passengers alike and will be strictly enforced throughout the two-month period.
Earlier, on the directives of Commissioner Karachi Syed Hasan Naqvi Section 144 was imposed in the SITE area and Keamari districts for two months, limiting several activities to keep public order and traffic control.
The implementation will remain effective until June 24, including a prohibition on encroachments on green belts, public spaces, and sidewalks, as well as debris discarded in these areas.
Earlier, Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi had imposed Section 144 to control heavy traffic movement in Karachi, prohibiting the entrance of heavy vehicles between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM to limit road accidents. The restriction is applied to freight vehicles also.
Law enforcement agencies have been directed to strictly deal with the violators of Section 144, guaranteeing compliance with the new regulations.

Ignoring the dangers posed by the six-foot-high tides, citizens of all ages openly defied city administration and police warnings, entering the water. From early morning, large crowds arrived at the beaches, turning the coastline into a picnic spot. Many, including families and thrill-seeking youth, were seen swimming in the sea despite repeated warnings from lifeguards about the dangerous tides that had become even more treacherous when pulling back. Police presence at Sands Pit also remained largely symbolic, with little enforcement of the ban. Food stalls and vendors were also seen openly operating along the shore, further encouraging large gatherings. A man, 22-year-old Saqib Ali, drowned while swimming in the sea near Sands Pit beach on Sunday. ASI Zulqarnain, in-charge of the Sands Pit police post, said Saqib and his two friends were caught in strong currents and were swept away by the high tide. A lifeguard stationed nearby managed to pull the three young men out of the sea, but Saqib's was rushed to a hospital, where he died.

Section 144 imposed across Sindh from 1st to 10th Muharram
The Sindh government on Wednesday announced the imposition of Section 144 across the province from the 1st to the 10th of Muharram to maintain law and order during the holy month, Aaj News reported. The decision aims to ensure peace and security during the month of Muharram. A notification has been issued prohibiting all public gatherings, rallies, and processions without prior approval. Carrying weapons in public will also be strictly banned. Security arrangements for Muharram: '232,000 cops to be deployed across Punjab' The notification further states that all weapon permits will remain suspended during the specified period. The use of drones and heli-cams, as well as the unauthorised use of loudspeakers, has been prohibited under the order. Additionally, pillion riding on motorcycles will be banned across Sindh on the 9th and 10th of Muharram to prevent any untoward incidents. Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and abide by the restrictions to ensure peaceful observance of religious events.

Aviation regulator orders Air India to remove officials
NEW DELHI: New Delhi's civil aviation regulator has ordered Air India to remove three officials from their roles over 'systemic failures', according to a directive seen by AFP Saturday, as the carrier comes under scrutiny after a deadly crash. The instruction from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) did not detail whether it was linked to the June 12 crash in Ahmedabad, which killed all but one of the 242 people on board. At least 38 others on the ground were killed. The DGCA directive noted that the airline's voluntary disclosures 'point to systemic failures in crew scheduling, compliance monitoring, and internal accountability'. 'Of particular concern is the absence of strict disciplinary measures against key officials directly responsible for these operational lapses,' said the order, which was issued on Friday. 'These officials have been involved in serious and repeated lapses,' it said. The regulator has directed Air India to remove three officials named in the order 'from all roles and responsibilities related to crew scheduling', take disciplinary action, and report on steps taken within 10 days. Future violations could also result in 'licence suspension'. The airline said on Saturday it had implemented the order. 'Air India is committed to ensuring that there is total adherence to safety protocols and standard practices,' it said in a statement. Investigators are attempting to find out what caused the airline's London-bound plane to hurtle to the ground moments after takeoff in Ahmedabad. Air India said on Thursday that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane was 'well-maintained' and that the pilots were accomplished flyers. The cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder have been recovered from the crash site.
