ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Damascus authorities must immediately reel in 'violent jihadists,' hold them accountable, and prevent their entry to the southern Druze-majority Suwayda province, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday, as Syrian authorities declared a halt to the fighting.
'If authorities in Syria want to preserve any chance of achieving a unified, inclusive, and peaceful Syria … they must end this calamity by using their security forces to prevent ISIS [Islamic State] and any other violent jihadists from entering the area and carrying out massacres,' Rubio said on X.
He called on Damascus to bring the perpetrators of atrocities in the area to justice, 'including those in their own ranks.'
'The rape and slaughter of innocent people which has and is still occurring must end,' Rubio asserted, adding that Washington is in touch with Israeli, Jordanian, and Syrian authorities over the developments in Suwayda.
Syria's interior ministry said on Sunday that fighting in Suwayda had 'halted' after tribal fighters pulled out of the city.
'The city of Suwayda was evacuated of all tribal fighters and clashes within the city's neighborhoods were halted,' ministry spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba said, adding that Syrian troops were deployed to the province's north and west.
The ceasefire, called for by the Syrian government, came after a Washington-brokered deal that sought to prevent further Israeli intervention.
On Sunday, US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack described the events in southern Syria as a 'profound shock,' saying 'brutal acts by warring factions on the ground undermine the government's authority and disrupt any semblance of order.'
'All factions must immediately lay down their arms, cease hostilities, and abandon cycles of tribal vengeance. Syria stands at a critical juncture - peace and dialogue must prevail - and prevail now,' he stressed.
Barrack further urged the Damascus authorities to capitalize on US President Donald Trump's decision to lift sanctions on the war-torn country.
A day prior, Barrack met with Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) chief Mazloum Abdi to discuss the situation in Syria.
'They also discussed practical steps towards integration into a unified Syria for a peaceful, prosperous, inclusive and stable future for all Syrians. They agreed the time for unity is now,' the US Embassy in Syria said on X.
Clashes in Suwayda erupted on Saturday between Druze fighters and tribal groups despite an internationally sponsored ceasefire, which pushed the death toll to around 940 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor.
Israel has come out in support of the Druze and hit several targets, including Syrian state forces and an airstrike on the building of the defence ministry in Damascus.
Clashes erupted last week between the Druze and Sunni Bedouin tribes. The Syrian army intervened and took control of most of the province, which had been under Druze rule since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December. A ceasefire was reached with US mediation and after Israel carried out strikes in support of the Druze. On Wednesday, interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced state forces were pulling out of the province.

Israeli Minister Strock: Dismantling Hamas priority regardless of hostage risk

Shafaq News – Middle East On Monday, Israeli Minister of Settlements and National Missions, Orit Strock, urged the military to expand its operations into every part of Gaza, including areas believed to hold hostages—a position critics warn could jeopardize their lives. 'There must not be 'don't touch me' zones in Gaza,' Strock told Kol Barama radio. 'Leaving them intact endangers the residents of border communities and the entire south.' Strock, a member of the far-right Religious Zionism party, acknowledged the risk to hostages but insisted that dismantling Hamas infrastructure must take precedence, claiming militants based in those zones regularly launch attacks on southern Israel and attempt to capture soldiers. 'To win, Israel must take full control of those areas and prevent them from remaining terrorist strongholds—both above and below ground.' Her comments sparked immediate backlash from the Hostages Families Forum, which accused her of treating captives as expendable. The forum condemned her stance as 'a disgrace to the [Israeli] government,' adding that 'it's unsurprising coming from someone who has, since the beginning, been a stubborn obstacle to securing their release.' Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack, which followed years of blockade and military tensions, killed about 1,200 Israelis and led to 251 hostages being taken. In response, Israel launched a massive military campaign that has killed more than 58,800 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. So far, Israel has reportedly rescued eight hostages alive and recovered several bodies. Officials estimate 56 hostages remain in Gaza, with about one-third thought to be alive. Israel and Hamas have also engaged in limited prisoner exchanges since the outbreak of war in October 2023, resulting in the release of dozens of hostages and Palestinian detainees as part of temporary ceasefire arrangements.

US Envoy: Hezbollah's disarmament is a Lebanese decision

Shafaq News – Beirut US Special Envoy Tom Barrack said Monday that Washington cannot guarantee Israeli restraint, reaffirming that the question of Hezbollah's weapons must be resolved solely by the Lebanese themselves. Speaking at the Grand Serail during his second visit to Beirut in two weeks, Barrack emphasized Washington's support for Lebanon's stability, while acknowledging the limits of US influence. 'We have no guarantees, and we cannot force Israel to do anything,' he said in response to questions about Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon. Although the United States continues to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, Barrack stressed that disarmament is 'a purely Lebanese matter.' Barrack also expressed support for the Lebanese government's reform agenda, confirming that sanctions on local officials are not currently under consideration. 'Our focus remains on supporting the reform path,' he said, describing recent steps taken by the government as 'significant.' The envoy met with President Joseph Aoun, who presented a formal memorandum outlining Lebanon's commitments since the November 27, 2024, ceasefire — including pledges in the presidential oath and the cabinet's policy statement — aimed at reactivating the political process and reinforcing stability. الرئيس عون استقبل الموفد الأميركي توماس باراك، وسلّمه باسم الدولة اللبنانية، مشروع المذكرة الشاملة لتطبيق ما تعهّد به لبنان، منذ إعلان 27 تشرين الثاني 2024، حتى البيان الوزاري للحكومة اللبنانية، مروراً خصوصاً بخطاب القسم لرئيس الجمهورية — Lebanese Presidency (@LBpresidency) July 21, 2025 During a prior visit, Barrack — who also serves as the US Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Turkiye — expressed satisfaction with Beirut's initial response to a US plan addressing Hezbollah's disarmament. However, he stressed that Lebanon must not be sidelined amid sweeping regional changes. Barrack's latest trip comes as Hezbollah's Secretary-General Naim Qassem warned of an 'existential threat' to Lebanon and firmly rejected any handover of weapons to Israel. 'Disarming Hezbollah is an Israeli demand. We will never surrender, and Israel will not take our weapons,' he stated.

Israeli military targets in Yemen's Hodeidah Port

Shafaq News - Hodeidah The Israeli military announced on Monday that it had carried out airstrikes targeting what it described as 'military infrastructure' used by Yemen's Houthi forces in the port city of Hodeidah. According to an official statement, the strikes destroyed engineering equipment involved in rebuilding port infrastructure, fuel barrels, and naval assets allegedly used in hostile activities against Israel and commercial vessels near the port. The Israeli Army also reported hitting other facilities it said were linked to Houthi military operations. "The Houthis have been using the port of Hodeidah to transfer weapons from the Iranian regime, which are then used to carry out terrorist attacks against Israel and its allies," the statement read. The military claimed it had observed attempts to reconstruct what it called "terrorist infrastructure" at the port, prompting the latest strike. — افيخاي ادرعي (@AvichayAdraee) July 21, 2025 This marks the 12th Israeli strike on Yemeni territory since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
