Comms Ministry slashes red tape for foreign film script approvals
This marks a significant step in bureaucratic reform, said Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic) .
Speaking at his weekly press conference on Thursday (June 26), Fahmi said the achievement is particularly noteworthy for the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), as it addresses a critical need for thorough script reviews for foreign film shoots in Malaysia.
"Several other agencies under the ministry have also undergone reform to reduce red tape.
"For instance, Puspal (Central Agency for Application of Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes) previously took a much longer time to process applications.
"However, following the launch of Puspal Guidelines 6.0 in April, many processes have been streamlined, especially in organising concerts and managing film productions involving foreign artistes and companies,' he said.
He also said the ministry is committed to intensifying reform efforts across its agencies and statutory bodies, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
The ministry is among three recognised for successfully implementing bureaucratic reform, receiving a special commendation for its achievements.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar even noted that the ministry's efforts have improved the efficiency of foreign script approvals, reducing processing time from 30 days to seven.
This, he said, resulted in regulatory cost savings of up to RM2.4mil per production, elevating Malaysia's competitiveness as a preferred international filming destination.
Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa received the special certificate of appreciation from Shamsul Azri at a ceremony in Putrajaya on Tuesday (June 24).
The Housing and Local Government Ministry and Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry were also recognised for their achievements in cutting red tape. – Bernama

Appointment of new Chief Justice briefly discussed by Cabinet
PUTRAJAYA: The appointment of a new Chief Justice was raised during the Cabinet meeting but it was not discussed in detail, says Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic). He said yesterday's meeting did discuss the replacement for outgoing Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat. 'We did discuss the matter (appointment of the Chief Justice) but it was not a deep discussion. The meeting centred around what Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had mentioned on the matter during the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department on June 30,' he said yesterday. Anwar had stated that the extension of service of civil servants, including top judges, is not automatic and must follow procedures in accordance with the Federal Constitution. Tengku Maimun ended her service as the nation's 16th Chief Justice on Tuesday. She had made history as the first woman Chief Justice when she was appointed to the post in May 2019. Tengku Maimun celebrates her 66th birthday today, therefore reaching the mandatory retirement age. Additionally, the second most senior judge in the country, Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, retired yesterday. Justice Abang Iskandar was the first judge from Sabah and Sarawak to hold the position. Fahmi, who is the government spokesman, said yesterday's meeting also discussed actions to be taken against businesses suspected to be involved in profiteering after the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) came into force on Tuesday. The meeting also discussed the heatwave currently affecting parts of the country, he added. Fahmi said the Cabinet briefing touched on the resumption of consultation talks between Malaysia and Indonesia. 'During the Prime Minister's last visit to Jakarta on June 27, it was agreed that the two countries will revive the annual consultation. 'The Prime Minister will be visiting Jakarta on July 29 for the annual consultation and Asean Secretariat meeting. 'The annual consultation would be a good forum to raise issues between the two countries, such as the Ambalat Block,' he said. The Ambalat Block is a sea block covering an area of 15,235 sq km. It is located in the Sulawesi Sea, or Makassar Strait, and borders Malaysian waters. The dispute between the two nations over the Ambalat Block has been ongoing for decades and is yet to be resolved. The border issue in Ambalat arose because of the overlapping territorial waters of the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf between the two countries, whose measurement refers to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Fahmi: Domestic Trade actively working to prevent profiteering after SST expansion
PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is actively working to prevent any profiteering following the recent expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) scope. Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said this was being done under an operation condenamed Op Kesan 4.0. "The public is encouraged to stay alert and lodge complaints about any instances of unreasonable price hikes at business premises by contacting the ministry's hotline. "Such complaints will enable authorities to swiftly identify the businesses involved and take appropriate enforcement actions," he said. Fahmi said this during his weekly post-cabinet meeting media briefing. On another matter, he said the cabinet has told the Health Ministry to monitor the weather conditions closely and issue appropriate announcements based on the situations. This, he said, was because of the ongoing southwest monsoon which led to dry and hot weather conditions nationwide.
