Chaine, Williams and Stephens can battle it out for PSL Goalkeeper of the Year award

While strikers often steal the spotlight with their goal-scoring heroics, it's easy to overlook the brilliance at the opposite end of the pitch.
A game-saving stop may not ignite the same roar as a goal, but its impact is just as decisive. In a league where consistency is everything, goalkeepers are often the unsung heroes – silently shaping results week in, week out.
Ronwen Williams claimed the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League Goalkeeper of the Season award, but this past campaign saw several shot-stoppers rise to the occasion.
Here, we take a look at five stand-out performers who made compelling cases for the crown... Sipho Chaine – Orlando Pirates

The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper has emerged as one of the most improved players in his position, making significant progress that has elevated him into a reliable choice for national team coach Hugo Broos.
Based on the qualities he has consistently displayed this season, he appears more than ready to make the leap to international football.
At 28, Chaine has featured in 25 matches during the current campaign, conceding only 18 goals while keeping an impressive 11 clean sheets across the 28 fixtures played by the Buccaneers.
When factoring in his total minutes on the pitch, his form places him among the genuine contenders for this season's top goalkeeping accolade. Ronwen Williams – Mamelodi Sundowns

South Africa's number one goalkeeper began the season on the sidelines due to injury.
But his return injected instant stability and leadership into a Mamelodi Sundowns side that went on to clinch their record-extending eighth straight league title.
The 33-year-old was involved in 16 league matches this term, recording 11 clean sheets and conceding just six goals.
Although he logged fewer minutes than initially anticipated, his influence between the posts remained undeniable, and was instrumental in Sundowns' continued domestic dominance.
What further sets Williams apart is his composure and technical skill in a side that demands a goalkeeper comfortable in possession.
Operating behind a team that values control and build-up play, his ability with the ball at his feet has been a critical asset, distinguishing him from his peers. Sage Stephens – Stellenbosch FC

Stellenbosch FC's experienced shot-stopper played a crucial role in helping his side finish as one of the league's most defensively solid teams, ranking third in terms of goals conceded.
Despite being hampered by some injury setbacks during the campaign, his presence and leadership were instrumental in guiding Stellies to a second consecutive third-place finish.
This came in a season where they had to overcome the loss of several key players, both at the start of the season and again during the January transfer period.

Mudau and Shalulile on their way out of Chloorkop? Sundowns coach responds
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained why his key players Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile, and Khuliso Mudau were missing this past weekend. The trio were absent during the team's 4-0 win over Richards Bay FC in the MTN8 quarter-final on Sunday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. While Ribeiro trained with the squad last week, there has been speculations over Mudau and Shalilule's futures at the club. The latter is linked with a high-profile move to Esperance 'All those things are being sorted out by the club and I'm sure they will be public in proper time,' Cardoso said on Sunday. 'I understand what's happening with Lucas, Peter, or Thapelo Morena, who was not here today [Sunday] because he had a small injury. But as a coach, I would want to have the team as complete as possible, and all coaches want to receive reinforcements for the new season as quickly as possible. 'So it's not where we are, but it doesn't mean we can't cope with our responsibilities. As a coach, I have to work on solutions rather than problems. 'It's obvious that we would have loved to start the season where we ended with all the players, but no one should think that Mamelodi Sundowns will be at a level that it shouldn't be in. I'm sure the people in charge will take responsibility to organise the issues in a proper time,' Cardoso added. Mudau is yet to agree on a new deal with Masandawana while Shalulile is looking for an exit after limited gametime last season under Cardoso. Tinkler's new look Sekhukhune United pass first test
Bradley Grobler celebrates scoring on debut for Sekhukhune United, helping fire Babina Noko into the MTN8 semi-finals. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Sekhukhune United's off-season rebuild began paying immediate dividends as their refreshed squad delivered a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over TS Galaxy to book a place in the MTN8 semi-finals. Babina Noko twice had to come from behind in the five-goal contest, with 37-year-old striker Bradley Grobler announcing his arrival in emphatic style by scoring twice on debut. The result means Eric Tinkler's side will now meet Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals — a rematch of the final-day league clash that saw Stellies pip them to third place last season. Tinkler, who oversaw one of the most active transfer windows in the league, handed debuts to several signings, including two promising youngsters in Olerato Mandi and Medupi Thokolo. "Olerato, who played as a No 10, has only been with the group for about four weeks, but I felt it was better to start him and take him off if needed. And Medupi, who came from Casric Stars, gave a really solid showing in central defence—even if we are asking him to adapt to a new, possession-based style.' But the headline act was undoubtedly Grobler, the former SuperSport United talisman, who twice pulled Sekhukhune level with clinical finishes—his experience proving vital in a game of fine margins. Thembinkosi Lorch faces Sundowns exit after missing pre-season
Thembinkosi Lorch appears to have no future at Mamelodi Sundowns, with sources indicating the former PSL Footballer of the Season is not part of head coach Miguel Cardoso's plans. The Citizen reports that Lorch was among the first casualties following Cardoso's arrival last December, having been loaned to Wydad Casablanca just a month later. Rushine de Reuck also departed during the same window, joining Israeli side Maccabi Petah Tikva on loan. Lorch impressed during his stint at Wydad, particularly with his performances at the Fifa Club World Cup, sparking speculation that he could be reintegrated into the Sundowns setup. However, Phakaaathi understands that Cardoso remains unconvinced and is looking to move in a different direction. The 32-year-old failed to report for pre-season, prompting the Sundowns hierarchy to explore possible exit options. Having signed from Orlando Pirates in a high-profile switch in January 2024, Lorch's move to Chloorkop has ultimately failed to live up to expectations. He is currently training on his own while plotting his next move, believed to be in North Africa. Cardoso, who has consistently expressed a preference for a smaller squad, has already approved De Reuck's switch to Simba SC in Tanzania. Lorch is expected to be the next to leave as Sundowns continue to trim their squad for the new season, with other big-name players also expected to depart the Chloorkop-based side.
