Pak bags silver in Asian Doubles Squash final

Pakistan on Thursday secured silver medal at the Asian Doubles Squash Championship after a valiant performance in the men's doubles final, where they went down 2-1 to arch-rivals India who bagged the gold medal after successfully defending the title in Malaysia.
The Pakistani duo of Noor Zaman and Nasir Iqbal fought hard but eventually succumbed to the Indian pair of Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar, who successfully defended their Asian title with a 9-11, 11-5, 11-5 victory.
The intense final lasted one hour and 27 minutes.
It is pertinent to mention that Zaman and Iqbal had delivered an impressive campaign en route to the final.
In the semifinals on Wednesday, the pair edged past host nation Malaysia in a tightly contested three-game match, winning 10-11, 11-9, 11-9 in a clash that stretched to one hour and eight minutes.
They overcame Malaysia's experienced duo of Syafiq Kamal and Duncan Lee to book their place in the final.
Earlier, Pakistan earned a 2-1 victory over Korea in the quarterfinals. The Iqbal-Zaman pair emerged victorious in another thrilling contest against Jiang Min Ryu and Jaijin Yoo, with game scores of 11-3, 5-11, 11-4.
The Pakistani team also performed strongly in the group stage, where they secured qualification to the knockouts with a comprehensive win over Chinese Taipei.
Nasir and Noor dispatched Chi Yu-Wei and Chen Ching-Fu in straight sets, 11-2, 11-9, in just 11 minutes.
Seeded second in the tournament, Pakistan started their campaign on Monday with dominant wins over the Philippines (11-7, 11-4) and South Korea, showcasing consistent form throughout the championship.
Individually, Noor Zaman had previously competed in the Asian Individual Squash Championship, where he bowed out in the pre-quarterfinals after a hard-fought five-game battle against Malaysia's Joachim Chuah.
Battling a back spasm, Zaman lost the first two games 3-11, 3-11, made a comeback by taking the next two 11-3, 12-10, but eventually fell 2-11 in the decider.

The national side, featured standout performances by Lia Raza Shah, Alisha Naveed, Samia Safdar, Halima, Sareena Hussain, Jasmine Farooq, Farah Rasheed, and Pareesa who displayed fantastic skills throughout the match, outplaying Saudi Aradia with superior passing and goal scoring, according to information made available here by Pakistan Netball Federation (PNF). Following the impressive victory, Chairman of the PNF Mudassar Arain, President Sameen Malik and Secretary General Muhammad Riaz extended their congratulations to the team. Pakistan will play its second league match against Chinese Taipei on Saturday (June 28). The Green Shirts are scheduled to face hosts South Korea on June 29, Japan on June 30, and Maldives on July 1 in their remaining group fixtures. The championship, featuring 11 participating nations, has been divided into two groups. Group A includes Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and India, while Pakistan is placed in Group B alongside Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea, Maldives, and Saudi Arabia. The tournament will continue till July 4. Eng chief Key says Archer can pick up Test career

PHOTO: AFP England supremo Rob Key expects Jofra Archer to slot back into an old routine should "one of the best bowlers in the world" make his long-awaited return to Test cricket next week. The 30-year-old express quick has been included in England's squad for the second Test against India at Edgbaston after an absence from red-ball internationals of more than four years. Archer, hampered by injuries during his career, has played just 13 Tests -- with 42 wickets at an average of 31 -- and none since February 2021. But one of the most talented cricketers of his generation has now been recalled to the Test squad on the back of just one County Championship match this season, away to Durham last week, where Archer took 1-32 in 18 overs. "He's a pretty pure talent, there's not a lot of moving parts to his action in terms of complications, and he's 30-years-old now," Key told reporters in London on Friday. "He knows exactly what he's doing and what he's about. So it's more of a question of him just getting back into red-ball cricket." Key, speaking at a media event staged by series sponsors Rothesay, added: "The whole Jofra plan has been a long time in the making... We had Neil Killeen up there (at Durham), one of our (England) bowling coaches. And Key insisted England were not taking a risk with Archer's fitness as they decide whether to play him at Edgbaston or at Lord's for the third Test. "When he finally comes back either next week or the week after, touch wood, then that will be brilliant," said Key. "He will be fit and available for both (Tests). Whether he could play both, we'll find that out afterwards, if he did play at Edgbaston. "He isn't going to forget how to bowl. He's an unbelievable talent. I think Jof is one of the best bowlers in the world." Archer, however, could struggle to get back into an England side that chalked up a stunning five-wicket victory over India in the first of a five-Test series at Headingley last week. But if he is overlooked in Birmingham, he could return to Sussex to play the last two days of their County Championship match against Warwickshire next week. "We've picked him in the squad and we'll see how the conditions are," said former England batsman Key. "We've got decisions to make because these next two Tests are very close together and you want to be able to sustain that pressure throughout these back-to-back Test matches. "The guys (who played at Headingley) got better the more they bowled. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. (Anyone who is not selected) can go back and play the last two days of the championship."
