
Smartphone bans in Dutch schools have improved learning, study finds
National guidelines, introduced in January 2024, recommend banning smartphones from classrooms and almost all schools have complied. Close to two-thirds of secondary schools ask pupils to leave their phones at home or put them in lockers, while phones are given in at the start of a lesson at one in five.
Researchers surveyed 317 secondary school leaders, 313 primary schools and conducted 12 focus groups with teachers, teaching assistants, students and parents. Secondary schools reported that children found it easier to concentrate (75%), the social environment was better (59%) and some said results had improved (28%).
Dr Alexander Krepel, a researcher at the Kohnstamm Instituut, said interactions between pupils had improved the most. 'It's not possible to secretly take a picture of someone in the classroom and then spread it in a WhatsApp group, so there's an increase in social safety,' he said. 'Especially in the breaks between the lessons, students would be on their phones and now they're forced to talk … Maybe they also get into a fight a bit more often but schools, teachers and students are quite happy with how the atmosphere is better.'
Initial fears surrounding the ban proved unfounded, according to Freya Sixma, spokesperson for the VO-raad secondary education council, which represents schools and governing boards. 'There was quite a lot of protest at first from schools, teachers, students, parents, questions about how it would all work,' she said. 'But now you see that actually everyone is pretty happy.'
The study showed in special schools, where exceptions can be given for learning support devices, about half reported that the ban had had a positive or very positive effect. In primary schools, smartphones did not have a huge effect before the ban, but a quarter were positive about it.
Mariëlle Paul, the minister for primary and secondary education, said the national guideline helped classroom discipline. 'Teachers and school leaders indicated that if an individual teacher wanted to ban the mobile from his or her class it would always be a discussion,' she said. 'More inexperienced teachers would have difficulties enforcing that.'
MPs could take a lesson from the results, too, Paul added. 'Even we as adults should admit that whatever is going on, the apps, WhatsApp, Snapchat or Instagram have a form of addictiveness. We once tried to do it for a debate on education … but that was pretty difficult.'

Statistics Netherlands reports that 96% of children go online almost every day, mostly through their phones. Last month, the caretaker government advised parents to ban social media for under-15s and limit screen time, while one MP has proposed a total ban on smartphones in schools.

Sophie Wyburd's recipes for summer pesto pasta
When hot summer days roll around, midweek dinners that require minimal cooking really come into their own. I love making pesto on such evenings, and not just the classic basil-and-pine-nut situation. Jazzing things up with braised greens or a red pesto made from lots of jarred goods are just two directions in which I like to take things for a big hit of flavour. Both of today's pestos freeze well, too. An almost no-cook sauce of smoked harissa whizzed up with jarred peppers, almonds and parmesan, tossed through rigatoni and topped with a dollop of lemony ricotta. Prep 5 min Cook 20 min Serves 4 Salt and black pepper 400g rigatoni 90g flaked almonds 350g jarred roasted peppers 80g sun-dried tomatoes 1 garlic clove, peeled1 heaped tbsp smoked harissa paste15g basil 90g pecorino romano Olive oil 250g ricotta Juice and finely grated zest of ½ lemon Bring a large pan of salted water to a boil, then add the pasta and cook according to packet instructions, until al dente. Meanwhile, toast the almonds in a dry frying pan on a medium heat for three minutes, or until lightly golden, then tip into a bowl and leave to cool to room temperature. Tip 70g of the almonds into the bowl of a food processor, add the peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, harissa and basil, then grate in 70g of the pecorino and whizz to a paste. With the motor still running, gradually drizzle in 100ml olive oil, then season to taste. Put the ricotta in a bowl, then grate in the remaining 20g pecorino and the lemon zest and juice. Whisk to combine, then season to taste with salt. When the pasta is cooked, drain it, reserving a mugful of the pasta cooking water, then tip the hot pasta back into the pan. Add the pesto and a splash of the reserved pasta water, then mix and toss until well combined. Spoon the pasta into bowls, top with a dollop of the lemon ricotta and a sprinkle of the remaining toasted almonds, finish with a drizzle of olive oil and serve. Prep 5 min Cook 45 min Serves 4 Olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped 200g runner beansSalt and pepper 400g casarecce70g pine nuts 15g mint 80g basil 70g parmesan Juice of ½ lemon Put a medium-sized saute pan on a medium heat, then add three tablespoons of olive oil. Tip in the sliced onion and saute for 20 minutes, stirring often, untilit has softened completely and taken on a bit of colour. Add the garlic and saute for a minute more. Trim the woody ends off the runner beans, then cut them diagonally into 2cm lengths. Stir these into the onions, add 100ml water and a pinch of salt, then pop on the lid and leave to cook for eight minutes. Bring a large pan of salted water to a boil, add the pasta and cook according to packet instructions, until al dente. Meanwhile, toast the pine nuts in a dry frying pan on a medium heat for three minutes, until lightly golden, then tip out and leave to cool. Pick the leaves off the mint, then put them in the bowl of a food processor with the basil (stalks and all) and toasted pine nuts. Grate in the parmesan, then pulse to a coarse paste. With the motor still running, drizzle in 100ml olive oil, then stir in the lemon juice and season to taste. When the pasta is cooked, drain it, reserving a mugful of the cooking water, then tip the pasta into the bean pan. Add the pesto and a splash of the reserved pasta cooking water, then mix and toss until well combined. Spoon the pasta into bowls, top with a little more parmesan and olive oil, and serve at once. King says 7/7 bombings aftermath brought out ‘very best of humanity'
The King has described how the 2005 London bombings showed 'the very best of humanity in the face of the very worst' as he marked the 20th anniversary of the attack. The monarch said in a message released to mark the milestone on Monday that his 'heartfelt thoughts and special prayers' were with those whose lives were 'forever changed on that terrible summer's day.' He said the anniversary should be used to 'reaffirm our commitment to building a society where people of all faiths and backgrounds can live together with mutual respect and understanding, always standing firm against those who would seek to divide us.' A series of coordinated explosions hit three London Underground trains and a double-decker bus during the morning rush hour on July 7, 2005, killing 52 people and injuring 700 others. The King said that while those killed by such 'senseless acts of evil' would be remembered, so too would 'the countless stories of extraordinary courage and compassion that emerged from the darkness of that day'. He added: 'The selfless bravery of our emergency services, transport workers, and fellow citizens who rushed towards danger to help strangers reminds us of the very best of humanity in the face of the very worst.' The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will represent the King at a National Service of Commemoration taking place at St Paul's Cathedral on Monday morning. The service, organised by the Mayor of London, is for those directly affected by the bombings, including survivors, bereaved families and first responders. A separate service will take place at the 7 July Memorial Gardens in Hyde Park. The memorial, comprising 52 steel pillars, one for each life lost, was unveiled in 2009, on the fourth anniversary of the attacks. 'Physical and psychological scars' Annual ceremonies have since been held there, featuring poignant music, readings and the laying of flowers by bereaved families and survivors. The King said those killed would be remembered 'with profound sadness' on the 20th anniversary of the attacks, as would 'the enduring grief' of their loved ones. 'We recall, too, the hundreds more who carry physical and psychological scars, and pray that their suffering may ease as the years pass,' he said. 'In doing so, we should also remember the countless stories of extraordinary courage and compassion that emerged from the darkness of that day. The selfless bravery of our emergency services, transport workers, and fellow citizens who rushed towards danger to help strangers reminds us of the very best of humanity in the face of the very worst. 'While the horrors will never be forgotten, we may take comfort from the way such events rally communities together in solidarity, solace and determination. It is this spirit of unity that has helped London, and our nation, to heal.'
