St Kevin's and Meads Cup successes hard to top

1. Favourite rugby memory?
Winning a couple of Blood Matches with St Kevin's in 2013 and 2014. It would be a toss-up between those and winning the Meads Cup with the Old Golds in 2019.
2. Hardest opponent?
Jesse Lusty-Winter, who played for Waitaki Boys'. Absolute grub, ha ha. Also one of my best mates and he is going to be in our wedding party.
3. Which rugby player do you admire and why?
Morgan Mitchell. He's just one of the best blokes you will ever meet. Workhorse, scrummaging powerhouse, puts in shots.
4. What do you do to relax?
I like to read a book. And I'm a bit obsessed with my fire and collecting firewood. I know it sounds weird but the best part of my day is getting home and lighting the fire, ha ha.
5. If Jacob Coghlan is cooking, what are we eating?
Lamb roast.

Polly back on the Wild side

PHOTO: ODT FILES As Queenstowner Polly Bennetts can attest, there's no place like home. The 17-year-old jetted back in to the resort early last month, having been based in Ontario, Canada, since last August, where she's playing ice hockey and finishing her secondary schooling at the Fort Erie International Academy. She pretty much got off the plane and went straight to training with her Wakatipu Wild women's ice hockey team, and, still jet-lagged, was on the ice for them against Canterbury at home a couple of days later. "Oh my god it was awful," she laughs. "I was so dead — I'd come off the ice and have to lie down on the bench." She's clearly shaken off the cobwebs now, though, and the international experience, which has seen her training every morning before school and lifting weights every day after school, appears to be reaping dividends. During her team's game against Auckland Steel, in Auckland, last Saturday, Polly scored one of the Wild's two goals in their opening 3-2 loss — captain Kellye Nelson scored the other — and scored the final goal of their 5-2 win last Sunday. The other goals on Sunday came from Caitlin 'Judy' Heale (two), Nelson and Bobbie Weeks. While she's enjoyed her time in Canada, Polly's fizzing to be back with her Wild teammates. "It's so good to be back with everybody that I'm familiar with ... I know everybody I'm playing against and it's just really nice." She's also rejoined the team at the perfect time. The Wild play their final home games for this season — and their last regular season round — against bottom-placed Dunedin Thunder tomorrow and Saturday nights. Two wins will secure them secondplace on the table, but their final standing going into the finals series in Dunedin later this month will rest on the result of the Auckland v Canterbury round next weekend. Regardless, Polly says the Wild are "hyped" for this weekend and ready to rumble. "For the first time, we've been able to practise twice this week. "We're so excited."

When they were kings

Aaron Smith celebrates victory after the 2015 Super Rugby final in Wellington. The All Blacks are dominating the southern rugby community's attention this week but it should not be forgotten that today is a special anniversary. It is 10 years since the Highlanders claimed their only Super Rugby title by beating the Hurricanes in the final in Wellington. Here is a reminder of that immortal season. Time to try ice hockey on rink

PHOTO: ODT FILES The Alexandra Flames Ice Hockey Club is calling on all children to come and try one of the coolest sports in the world at a have a go day this Saturday. Alexandra Flames secretary Pip Thompson said with the rugby season due to finish, the mid-season "have-a-go day" was about letting children try the sport. Ice Hockey New Zealand recently started a programme called "Kiwi Hockey" and gave gear, jerseys and support to all the ice hockey clubs in the country to help them hold free have-a-go days to get them into the sport. While the have-a-go day was aimed primarily at those under-12, the days were set up so older children could come along and try too, she said. Children on the day would be kitted up with gear by club volunteers and get on the ice to play three on three cross ice hockey. The have-a-go days are well received by parents and skaters, with the first held earlier in the season attracting seven more players than what the club expected, she said. "They come along, have a go, decide if they like it and then they twist mum or dad's arm into registering." Club ice hockey is dissimilar to the more physical game seen in North America, in the younger grades there is no checking. "It's just a good way to get out, do something physical. "They [the children] make lots of friends." The Flames were a great, friendly club, she said. "It's kind of like we're all a big family, everyone helps each other out, it's a great sport for the kids because they're going to learn how to play like a team, get on with one another." As it was halfway through the season, registration fees were reduced for those who wanted to take up the sport, for those who wanted to play as a goalie, the registration was free, she said.
