Sky Sports confirms Premier League changes ahead of final games

Daily Mirror23-05-2025

Sky Sports has made some big changes to its broadcast schedule for the 2025/26 Premier League season
The 2024/25 Premier League season is almost at its end, but Sky Sports is already looking ahead to next season. Ahead of the final day on Sunday (May 25), the broadcaster has announced some major changes to its coverage of the 2025/26 campaign.
Sky has confirmed it will broadcast a 'record minimum' of 215 Premier League matches every season from 2025/26. This will see Sky's coverage increase from 128 Premier League matches to at least 215, which it says is more than any other broadcaster.
Ahead of the new season kicking off on August 16, Sky is offering a discounted sports package that includes more than 1,400 live games across the Premier League and EFL. The Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle now costs £35 per month, saving £192 from the standard £43 rate.
This provides access to all of Sky Sports' 215 matches, including more than 140 at weekends, evening matches on Fridays and Mondays and three midweek rounds. Sky has also confirmed it will broadcast all 10 Premier League matches on the final day of each season for the first time.
Fans will also be able to choose from multiple live matches on a number of weekends in the Sunday 2pm kick-off slot, as well as 'most of' the festive season fixtures. Boxing Day Premier League football will return to Sky Sports this year after Amazon's Prime Video ended its six-year run of coverage last Christmas.
It comes after Sky signed a new four-year deal for the league's TV rights in 2023. Dana Strong, Group CEO, Sky said: 'This is a fantastic result for Sky customers, who will see a significant increase in the number of matches from the most iconic league in the world. Sky is the undisputed home for sport fans in the UK.'
Virgin Media customers will also have access to Sky's Premier League coverage with select packages. Virgin provides eight Sky Sports channels with its Bigger Combo bundle + Sports, which is more expensive than Sky at £65.99 per month but also includes 362Mbps broadband and more than 200 TV channels.
Sky announced it had agreed a new rights deal in December 2023, with fans flocking to social media to congratulate the broadcaster. Writing on X, one said: 'Really looking forward to this. Congratulations to Sky Sports on this massive deal.'
Another said: 'Here's to 215 epic games.'
Not everyone is happy about the changes though, as this fan said: 'And yet that's still about 55% of all Premier League games. People in the UK pay fortunes to watch half of a product produced in the UK, yet people abroad can watch 100% for a fraction of the price.'
But this fan disagreed, saying: 'Next season's MVPs might just be the broadcasters.'
The Premier League fixtures for the 2025/26 season are due to be released at 9am on June 18. Liverpool will be defending their title after securing the top spot for the 20th time, with Leeds United and Burnley joining the fray having been promoted from the Championship.
Sheffield United and Sunderland will meet on May 24 in the Championship play-off final, with the winner booking their place in the Premier League.

Guardiola worried that lack of rest after Club World Cup could 'destroy' Man City

June 30 (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is concerned about the lack of rest his side will get ahead of the new Premier League season and said their involvement in the Club World Cup could "destroy" them. City wrapped up the previous Premier League season on May 25 and opened their Club World Cup campaign in Philadelphia just over three weeks later on June 18. They face Al-Hilal in Orlando on Saturday in the round of 16 and should City go on to reach the final on July 13 they will have a month to prepare for their new league campaign beginning on August 16. Guardiola said he did not know how much the Club World Cup would take out of his squad and told reporters to ask him about the impact later in the year. "I may say, so listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us," he added. "I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened. So we'll see." Guardiola said he understood comments made by former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who said the expanded 32-team event, to be held once every four years during the pre-season, was football's worst idea. "Juergen, we fought together many, many times... when we went to UEFA meetings especially, or when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality, giving the managers and players more rest," Guardiola said. "So his comments didn't surprise me a lot ... I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well."

Arsenal handed Viktor Gyokeres transfer boost as fresh offer revealed

Arsenal are yet to make their first signing of the summer transfer window but it could potentially be a very exciting week for the Gunners with a number of deals in the pipeline Arsenal have had a very quiet summer transfer window so far - but it might not stay that way for long. Mikel Arteta is chasing a number of signings as he attempts to cut the gap to Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table. A move for Martin Zubimendi is all-but done and he is expected to be followed by compatriot Kepa Arrizabalaga, who will arrive from Chelsea. A striker is also on the shortlist for the Gunners, with both Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko both candidates to arrive at the Emirates. ‌ Valencia star Cristhian Mosquera has also emerged as a major target over the coming days and work looks set to continue on deal for the Spanish starlet. ‌ There could also be some major exits over the coming weeks, too, with a few sales earmarked before the end of the window. With that being said, take a look at the latest transfer news and rumours from the Emirates Stadium: Sporting chiefs offers Gyokeres update Sporting Lisbon president Federico Varandas has admitted that Viktor Gyokeres could leave the club this summer for less than his release clause. "Sporting is calm regarding this matter," Varandas said."Secondly, Sporting does not need to sell Viktor Gyökeres. Fortunately, we have moved past the phase of selling our main asset. "However, we remain sensitive to Viktor's dreams or those of any other athlete. Sporting has made a commitment that, after weeks of meetings, we will not demand the full amount of the clause; we will be reasonable regarding the amount requested for Viktor. "Today, there is a strong likelihood that he will leave. I won't disclose the amount, but the player knows what it is. I can say that Viktor will not leave for 60+10m. He won't leave, absolutely not. "In recent weeks, we have been paying attention. I saw a player, Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go for 65 million, and I saw Matheus Cunha move to Manchester United for around 75 million euros. We are talking about players who are 26 years old. I believe Viktor could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world, which I don't believe, as his agent is one of the best in the world." ‌ Berta leading Mosquera talks Arsenal chief Andrea Berta will consider upping his side's bid for Valencia star Cristhian Mosquera after seeing their first offer turned down. According to Spanish outlet Super Deporte, Arsenal's opening offer was in the €15m (£12.8m) region. That was not enough to convince the La Liga side to sell. However, it is suggested that around €20-25m, with €3-5m in add-ons could be enough to get a deal done. ‌ Mosquera remains out of contract next summer. He has recently been playing for Spain at the under-21 Euros. Arsenal to battle United Arsenal will reportedly go head to head with Manchester United for the signing of Roma star Evan N'Dicka. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Frenchman is available this summer. It is suggested that Roma want to receive around £30m for N'Dicka so they avoid a punishment for breaching spending rules. There is further interest however, with Newcastle also keeping an eye on developments.

BREAKING NEWS Huge change to the way Aussies watch football as Optus is DITCHED as English Premier League broadcaster: Here's where to watch it instead

Channel Nine and its streaming service Stan have secured the right to air all English Premier League matches in Australia in what amounts to a seismic change for soccer fans down under. The broadcaster reached an agreement to snatch the rights from Optus Sport in a move that was officially announced on Monday. Under the terms of the deal, Nine and Stan will also be the sole way to watch FA Cup matches in Australia. The three-year-deal effectively ends Optus's live sports programming and brings an end to the Optus Sport platform, which will close. Nine has bought out the rest of the rights period from Optus, with Stan giving discounted pricing to Optus Sport customers so they can continue to watch the world's biggest football league. The transition of the rights becomes official on August 1. 'The Premier League is the most-watched football league on the planet, and alongside the FA Cup, this acquisition reinforces Nine's position as the home of sport in Australia. We are proud to deliver these iconic competitions to Australian audiences through Stan Sport,' Nine CEO Matt Stanton said in a statement.
