Labour force in GCC countries reaches 31.8mln: GCC-Stat

Zawya02-03-2025
MUSCAT: Data issued by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) revealed that the total labour force in GCC countries reached 31.8 million, representing 54.2 percent of the total population.
Male workers accounted for 78.7 percent, while females made up 17.6 percent.
The number of working citizens in the GCC stood at 5.6 million, constituting 23.4 percent of the total labour force, with 60 percent males and 40 percent females.
GCC-Stat's data also showed a 600,000 increase in the number of working women in the region since 2011.
The data indicated that the government sector is still the largest employer of Gulf workers, with a wide scope for localisation in the private sector. The percentage of employed citizens working in the public sector reached 83.5 percent compared to 14.2 percent in the private sector.
Statistics also revealed that GCC countries' citizens work mainly in the services sector, particularly in public administration activities.
GCC countries have introduced policies to localise the workforce, such as the GCC Common Market and the Comprehensive Development Strategy, which aim to address imbalances in population structure, workforce distribution, and industrial development. These policies aim to increase the national workforce's contribution to the industrial sector.
Additionally, the population strategy seeks to enhance the role of women in development, balance population and workforce structures, and improve national workforce training programmes.
All GCC countries give priority to young workers, promote economic diversification efforts and move towards creating green and environmentally friendly jobs.

Deem Finance redefines credit card rewards with customer-first loyalty programme

Deem Finance has introduced a first-of-its-kind approach to customer empowerment. Their latest offering, the Joy-Win Credit Card Program, reimagines the traditional credit card rewards model by giving users the flexibility to choose how and when they want to be rewarded. Launched recently through the Deem Mobile App, the loyalty scheme allows cardholders to switch between two distinct reward options: Joy: which offers guaranteed returns on lifestyle or travel spending. Win: which gives users the chance to enter a grand prize draw of Dh 250,000. The switch can be made once every month with no paperwork, no extra fees, and no long-winded terms and conditions. "We noticed a gap in the market," said Chris Taylor, CEO of Deem Finance. "Most credit card rewards in the region are rigid. You either get fixed cashback or limited prize opportunities, with no real say in how you want to be rewarded." The Joy-Win model was developed to address that exact gap by offering customers control and flexibility to shift between rewards based on their lifestyle, situation, and monthly goals. While Win mode caters to those who enjoy high-value, aspirational incentives with the excitement of a grand prize, Joy is designed for customers who prefer consistent, predictable value through everyday spending. The development of the Joy-Win Credit Card was heavily shaped by customer feedback and behavioural insights. Surveys and digital touchpoints revealed that users were looking for greater clarity, simplicity, and the ability to choose how their rewards are earned. Recognising that some users prioritise guaranteed cashback while others are motivated by big-ticket draws, Deem built a product to serve both needs, with the added convenience of switching modes through a single mobile interface. This launch signals more than just a product update; it reflects a broader strategy to align financial tools with evolving customer expectations in a digital-first, post-pandemic world. According to Taylor, Deem's mission is centred around simplicity, transparency, and choice, and the Joy-Win programme is a direct reflection of that philosophy. It moves away from one-size-fits-all solutions and offers a personalised experience built for modern lifestyles. Since its rollout, the Joy-Win programme has gained notable traction, especially among millennials and Gen Z. These segments, known for their tech-driven habits and preference for personalisation, have responded positively to the ability to switch between reward models seamlessly. 'In a market where rewards often feel pre-decided for you,' said Taylor, 'we're handing the reins back to the customer.' Customers can switch between JOY and WIN via the Deem Mobile App every month where JOY Mode offers guaranteed rewards on lifestyle or travel spend, up to Dh 1,000, depending on spend thresholds. WIN Mode earns users entries into an Dh 250,000 prize draw for every Dh 100 spent. The programme is available to all eligible Deem credit card users at no extra cost.

GulfNav raises $136.15mn through oversubscribed MCB offering

Gulf Navigation Holding (GulfNav) has successfully raised AED 500 million (US$136.15 million) through an oversubscribed Mandatory Convertible Bond (MCB) offering. The money raised will form a key component of the company's AED 3.2 billion (US$870 million) acquisition of Brooge Energy Limited and supports the company's vision to expand into the regional energy infrastructure sector. Sheikh Theyab bin Tahnoon bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, Chairman of Gulf Navigation Holding, commented: 'This offering marks a significant step toward executing the acquisition. It reflects the strong confidence our shareholders have in the company's vision to grow in the energy infrastructure space. We will continue to focus on completing the next phases of the transaction and strengthening GulfNav's role as an integrated logistics solutions provider in the region.' GulfNav strengthens position with Brooge deal The Brooge acquisition was approved by GulfNav shareholders on 13 March this year, and the agreement was signed on 28 May. The bonds were offered at AED 1.10 each and will be converted into shares on or before 29 October 2025. Total subscriptions exceeded AED 520 million from eligible shareholders who subscribed through Emirates NBD, the lead receiving bank. The AED 500 million raised through the MCBs will fund the cash component of the acquisition, while the remaining consideration will be settled through the issuance of approximately 359 million new shares to Brooge at AED 1.25 per share (subject to a one-year lock-up), and an additional AED 2.3 billion in MCBs issued to Brooge, convertible at AED 1.25 per share, also with a one-year lock-up post-conversion. Founded in 2013, Brooge is one of the most technologically advanced companies in the crude oil storage services sector. It has strengthened its investments and presence in Fujairah and become an important hub in oil storage and exporting. The Brooge acquisition is expected to strengthen GulfNav's market position and boost its operational efficiency and competitive edge. It will also diversify the company's revenue streams and deepen relationships with key strategic partners in the energy sector.
