Syrian government forces seize Druze village: AFP

Roya News3 days ago
Syrian government forces are moving closer to the city of Suwayda, following their capture of the nearby Druze village of Al-Mazraa, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The reporter observed units affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Defense positioned inside Al-Mazraa on Monday, continuing their push toward the provincial capital. The military deployment comes amid escalating violence between Druze fighters and Bedouins that has left dozens dead in recent days.
A field commander, Ezzeddine al-Shamayer, confirmed the advance, stating, 'We are heading toward Suwayda.'
As chaos spread across villages near Suwayda city, the Israeli Occupation announced it had struck "several tanks" in the area, citing its longstanding pledge to intervene in Syria to defend the Druze community.
The violence reportedly began on Sunday after Bedouin gunmen abducted a Druze vegetable vendor along the Damascus highway. The kidnapping sparked swift retaliatory abductions and ignited armed confrontations in multiple parts of Suwayda province.
Despite hostages being released, the fighting continued into Monday, with mortar rounds hitting several villages. Streets in Suwayda city emptied, shops shuttered, and funerals for the dead were marked by sporadic gunfire.

Arab, regional ministers back Syria's unity, condemn 'Israeli' strikes

Foreign ministers from Jordan, the UAE, Bahrain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Egypt concluded two days of intensive talks on the situation in Syria, culminating in a joint statement expressing unified support for the Syrian government's efforts to restore security, stability, and sovereignty across the country. The ministers reaffirmed their collective support for Syria's unity and territorial integrity, emphasizing the need to preserve its sovereignty and reject all forms of foreign interference in its internal affairs. In their statement, the ministers welcomed the agreement reached to end the crisis in sweida, urging its full implementation as a means to protect civilians, preserve national unity, and uphold state authority and the rule of law. They also praised Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa's commitment to holding accountable those responsible for violations against civilians in sweida, and expressed support for all efforts to reestablish law, order, and civil peace in the province and across Syria. The statement included a strong condemnation of repeated 'Israeli' attacks on Syrian territory, describing them as blatant violations of international law and an assault on Syria's sovereignty. The ministers warned that such attacks undermine regional stability and obstruct Syria's reconstruction efforts. Declaring that Syria's security is essential for regional peace, the ministers called on the international community to support Syria in its rebuilding process. They also urged the UN Security Council to take responsibility for ensuring Israel's full withdrawal from all occupied Syrian territories, halting hostilities, and enforcing international resolutions, including Resolution 2766 and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

Druze leader denies involvement in revenge attacks as Israeli-backed militias seize control in Suwayda

ALBAWABA- Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, the Israel-backed Druze spiritual leader in Suwayda, has publicly denied that his armed followers committed retaliatory acts against Bedouin tribes following the withdrawal of Syrian government forces from the governorate. We reject sectarianism and any call for fragmentation.' ⚡️🇸🇾JUST IN: Israel-backed Druze militias under Hikmat al-Hijri killed Bedouin civilians, including women and children, looted homes, and forced many to flee after the Syrian army withdrew from Suwaida. — Suppressed News. (@SuppressedNws) July 17, 2025 His remarks follow widespread reports and video footage circulating on social media that show members of Bedouin tribes fleeing Suwayda amid claims of targeted violence by armed Druze factions. These events come after Syrian forces pulled out of the region as part of a local ceasefire agreement reached in Yestrday between Suwayda community leaders and state officials. The deal granted local forces authority over internal security in the province. Following the withdrawal, Druze fighters aligned with Al-Hijri reportedly took control of key areas in Suwayda. They raised the Druze flag, bearing the Star of David, a symbol increasingly used by pro-Israel Druze militias, over the governorate building, declaring their rejection of any renewed Syrian military presence south of Damascus. According to local sources, initial reports indicate that armed militias affiliated with Hikmat al-Hijri have carried out field executions resulting in the deaths of approximately 100 Bedouin tribespeople, including women and children. As-Suwayda, SyriaThursday, July 17, 2025 On July 17, 2025, disturbing reports emerged from As-Suwayda, Syria, alleging that militias affiliated with Hikmat al-Hijri, a prominent Druze leader, committed severe human rights violations 👇#السويداء #HekmatAlHajriMilitiaMassacre — Roba Alhakiem (@RAlhakiem) July 17, 2025 'What the regime did was send troops to kill our Druze brothers,' Al-Hijri said in his speech. 'So I instructed our forces to retaliate. The ceasefire came through force, not through negotiations.' Israeli support for Al-Hijri's forces appears to have intensified in last few days. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have reportedly provided air cover for Druze militias, targeting Syrian military convoys and blocking reinforcements near and inside Suwayda. Over the last 48 hours, IDF airstrikes have hit Syrian armored vehicles and convoys, while also targeting the gate of the Syrian military headquarters in Damascus in what sources describe as a 'warning shot.' Also Read Israeli forces strike Syrian tanks amid clashes in Suwayda Analysts describe the conflict as a key test for Ahmad Al-Shara's leadership, as Syrian forces face mounting casualties and growing regional pressure. Military analysts suggest Israel may escalate its air campaign further, potentially targeting government institutions, military headquarters, and launching selective assassinations against key regime figures, while continuing to back proxy militias on the ground. Reports of Bedouin families fleeing Suwayda toward Daraa have raised alarms over what some are calling an emerging ethnic cleansing campaign, as retaliatory violence intensifies. Despite the denial from Al-Hijri, the situation on the ground continues to deteriorate, with the fragile ceasefire hanging by a thread, and Suwayda increasingly becoming the epicenter of a regional showdown between Syrian forces and Israeli-backed militias. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (

Star of David placed on Druze flag and raised over Sweida governorate building

Published July 17th, 2025 - 12:17 GMT ALBAWABA - In a shocking video, a group of armed Druze men were spotted in front of the governorate building in Sweida city in Syria while raising two flags, one of which was the national Druze flag, and the other had the "Star of David" on it. Syrians were surprised after the video went trending on social media, showing Druze militia men standing near the governorate building in Sweida city after the withdrawal of Syrian government forces from the area on Thursday morning. In the footage, two of the group of men were holding flags, but what caused the controversy online was that one of the flags was slightly different, as it carried the "Star of David". Some activists said that the Druze flag with the Star of David on it belongs to the "Israeli Druze" as a similar flag was in 2018 spotted in the Druze town of Daliat al-Karmel, northern Israel, according to The Jerusalem Post. — Tamer | تامر (@tamerqdh) July 17, 2025 The Druze flag is rectangular in shape and features five horizontal stripes of different colors: red, yellow, blue, green, and white, arranged from top to bottom. Clashes in Sweida started when Syrian government forces were dispatched to Sweida on Monday, July 14, to halt fighting between Druze fighters and Bedouin men, and restore peace, but they ended up clashing with the Druze militias, according to France 24. Federico Jachetti, the Norwegian Refugee Council's (NRC) Syria Country Office Director, said regarding Sweida unrest, "With hundreds of deaths reported among civilians, at least 1,200 families have fled their homes to seek shelter with friends and relatives elsewhere in Sweida, in rural areas south of the city, and the neighbouring Daraa governorate." © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (
