Punjab parties unite against land pooling scheme, demand FTA exclusion
During the meeting held on Friday, leaders from across the political spectrum sought to strengthen the cooperative sector, annul all existing water accords and review Sections 78, 79, and 80 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act. A consensus was reached to urge the Punjab assembly to pass a resolution and sent to the Centre, advocating for parliamentary amendments to these sections.
The SKM had convened the all-party meeting, challenging political factions to clarify their positions on contentious issues facing Punjab.
Representatives from Congress, BJP, Shiromani Akali Dal, BSP, SAD (five-member recruitment committee), CPI, CPI (M), CPI(ML) Liberation, CPI(ML) New Democracy, and RMPI participated, with only AAP absent.
The land pooling scheme has faced widespread condemnation. In a voice vote, party leaders slammed the state govt, labelling the scheme a "ploy to seize fertile lands from farmers and hand them over to corporates".

Beyond land pooling, political leaders supported the SKM's agenda to annul water-sharing agreements, urging the state govt to pass a resolution to the Centre. They also backed the SKM's demand to scrap the Dam Safety Act in its current form, arguing it undermines the federal structure by transferring state rights over dams to the Centre.
Unanimous support was also voiced for bolstering the cooperative movement to combat the sale of spurious seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and insecticides.
SKM leaders Balbir Singh Rajewal, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, Darshanpal, Buta Singh Burjgill, and Raminder Patiala presided over the proceedings. Prominent attendees included Avtar Singh Karimpuri (BSP), Randeep Singh Nabha (Congress), Kewal Singh Dhillon (former MLA), Subash Sharma (BJP), Sukhdeep Singh and Dinesh Kumar (SAD), Iqbal Singh Jhunda and Gurpartap Singh Wadala (SAD five-member committee), Sukhwinder Sekhon (CPI(M)), Bant Singh Brar (CPI), Sukhdarshan Natt and Gurmeet Singh Bakhtupura (CPI(ML) Liberation), Darshan Singh Khatkar (CPI(ML) New Democracy), and Pargat Singh Jamrai (RMPI), all presenting their party's views.
SKM leaders later clarified their objective is to understand political parties' stances. The SKM stated it would continue to champion these issues, with parties expected to offer external support.

On Friday evening, representatives from six villages whose land is earmarked for the pooling scheme reiterated their refusal to surrender their land. Gathering at Kot Kalan, they issued a stern warning to AAP workers, stating that anyone attempting to advocate for the policy in their villages would be responsible for the unsavoury situation and consequences. According to AAP insiders, the local-level office bearers in Jalandhar and other areas of the state find themselves in a catch-22 situation. While the party high command has issued clear directives to engage with farmers and explain the policy, ground workers fear hostile receptions. Around 700 acres of these are from Kukkar Pind alone. A 'gram sabha' meeting of Kukkar Pind held on July 20 passed a resolution rejecting their village land being brought under land pooling. The resolution argued that the scheme would have the worst impact on small farmers and farm labourers. The resolution stated that after thorough deliberations, the village panchayat and the residents decided to 'strongly oppose' the land pooling policy and that they would not allow the Punjab govt to implement it in their village. They appealed to the state govt to review its decision and resolve the issue before things start taking an unsavoury turn. The village also decided to send the gram sabha resolution to the Punjab chief minister, revenue minister, and Jalandhar deputy commissioner. 1 2 Chandigarh: The usually serene halls of the Government Museum & Art Gallery, Sector 10, echoed with passionate pleas and pointed protests as the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) held a public hearing on electricity tariff proposals and power management for the current financial year. Citizens, activists, and representatives from across the city gathered to challenge what many called an "unjust" and "exploitative" hike in electricity charges. Representing over 100 Resident Welfare Associations, Crawfed came out swinging against Chandigarh Power Distribution Ltd (CPDL). Their spokesperson lambasted the proposed increase in both usage and fixed charges, highlighting a staggering 500% rise in fixed charges over the past two decades. "This is not just unfair—it's inhumane," they declared, demanding that tariffs be based on actual consumption rather than the number of household appliances. Crawfed also called for an overhaul of CPDL's operations, urging JERC to curb unannounced power cuts that continue to disrupt daily life. The members of the Indian Citizens' Forum (ICF) raised the issue of refunding wrongly charged meter rentals and payment of compensation to all complainants in Chandigarh for the wrongful charging of meter rentals. SK Nayar, President, ICF, submitted, "CPDL has floated a scheme for SELF DECLARATION of LOAD for LT consumers only, but the format circulated is neither as per JERC approved format of Supply Code. This scheme is meant only for LT consumers and that too for excess load only, it means no HT consumer is allowed to avail benefit of this scheme to increase or decrease his load. Similarly, LT consumer also not allowed decreasing his load as per this scheme whereas no such bar exists in the Supply Code, 2018 with its up-to-date amendment." AAP opposed this privatisation from day one, participating in city-wide protests alongside electricity department employees.
