Chandler Simpson, Rays try to run into series win vs. White Sox

July 23 - Chandler Simpson is keeping it simple. The Tampa Bay Rays rookie speedster knows what is expected of him, and he's doing his best to deliver. Fresh off recording three stolen bases, Simpson will look for an encore on Wednesday when the Rays vie to win the rubber match of the three-game series against the visiting Chicago White Sox. "I just know what I'm supposed to do and try not to go outside of that," Simpson said, per the Tampa Bay Times. "And I know that what I'm supposed to do is what's going to help the team win." Rays manager Kevin Cash has enjoyed seeing the 24-year-old Simpson work his way around the bases. The outfielder has stolen 30 bases in 58 games. "He knows his strengths," Cash said. "He's going to try to maximize his strengths, and that's put pressure on defense with contact ability, and then once he gets on base, the whole ballpark, the whole stadium knows he's looking to run. "So no, I don't think he has shown one time trying to do something different, other than be who he is." Jose Caballero had a two-run single to highlight a four-run second inning in Tampa Bay's 4-3 victory on Tuesday night. Caballero had two of the five hits for the Rays on Tuesday, helping his club snap its two-game skid and halt a season-high four-game winning streak by the White Sox. Chicago's Jonathan Cannon (4-7, 4.18 ERA) will be tasked with keeping Simpson and Caballero at bay on Wednesday when he gets the start against Tampa Bay's Taj Bradley (6-6, 4.35) in a battle of right-handers. Cannon, 25, improved to 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA in three outings this month after allowing one run on five hits in seven innings of a 10-1 victory in Pittsburgh last Friday. He struggled in his lone career appearance against Tampa Bay, permitting four runs on eight hits -- including two homers -- in five innings of a no-decision on April 27, 2024, in just his third career start. The White Sox won 8-7 in 10 innings. Like Cannon, Bradley got the win in his most recent trip to the mound. Bradley scattered three hits over six scoreless innings in the Rays' 11-1 romp over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Bradley, 24, has yet to face the White Sox in his young career. Chicago's Colson Montgomery launched his first career homer in the majors on Tuesday after he led off the seventh with a 359-foot blast. Unfortunately for the White Sox, they were able to muster only six hits and saw their season-high four-game winning streak come to a halt. Luis Robert Jr. is expected to return to the lineup after being held out on Wednesday. He has two homers and eight RBIs to highlight his current eight-game hitting streak. "(He is) plugged in," White Sox manager Will Venable said of Robert. "The way he was running around out there in Pittsburgh, and a hot day yesterday, just want to keep him fresh and feeling good." Chase Meidroth had an RBI single on Tuesday, one day removed from collecting four hits in Chicago's 8-3 victory in the series opener. He has eight hits -- including four doubles -- in his past four games. --Field Level Media

Phillies turn to Jesus Luzardo in bid for sweep of Red Sox

July 23 - After two terrific outings from their starting pitchers to begin their series against the visiting Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies will turn to Jesus Luzardo in hopes of completing a sweep on Wednesday. Zack Wheeler allowed two runs in six innings in Monday's 3-2 victory and then Cristopher Sanchez raised the bar Tuesday with a complete game, allowing only four hits in a 4-1 triumph. The Phillies' two starters combined to strike out 22 batters without a walk. "They just feed off each other," Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said after Sanchez's 12-strikeout gem. "They want to be better than the last guy. It's a good competition." Max Kepler and Kyle Schwarber hit solo homers on Tuesday as the Phillies won back-to-back games for the first time since July 5 and 6. "This is a really good team that we have in here obviously," said Bryce Harper, who scored on a catcher's interference. "We've just got to keep playing our baseball and coming through when we need to." Meanwhile in the visiting dugout, manager Alex Cora is challenging his team to step it up against All-Star caliber pitching. Boston's Roman Anthony is 1-for-9 with eight strikeouts in the series. "Two of the best pitchers in the majors," Cora said of Wheeler and Sanchez. "That's the reason they're good. If we want to play in October, we have to find a way to hit those guys." The Phillies hope to ride the momentum behind Luzardo (8-5, 4.29 ERA), who did not make it out of the fifth inning in his last start. The left-hander lasted only 4 2/3 innings Friday, allowing four runs and seven hits in a 6-5 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. He did not figure into the decision. "Extremely frustrating, especially when the offense gives you four runs early," Luzardo said. "If you ask any starter in the league, if the offense gives you four runs, it should be a win for the team no matter what, so I feel like obviously this loss was on me." Philadelphia has won just three of the last 10 games started by Luzardo, who will be facing Boston for the second time in his career. On June 29, 2023, he limited the Red Sox to three hits over six scoreless innings in a 2-0 win as a member of the Miami Marlins. He was not credited with a decision. Boston will turn to Lucas Giolito (6-2, 3.59), who had a personal six-game winning streak halted in his most recent start. The right-hander gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs on Friday en route to his first defeat since May 6 in the 4-1 game. "It's a bad way to start the series and the second half," Giolito said. "I've got to be a tone-setter. I didn't do that. Two walks and a home run -- three runs in the first inning -- puts us on our heels, so I've got to be better than that." Giolito is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in two lifetime starts against the Phillies, both of which came in 2023. --Field Level Media

Behind Matt Shaw, Cubs chase series win vs. Royals

July 23 - The All-Star break provided a welcome respite for Chicago Cubs rookie third baseman Matt Shaw, who is eager to leave his first-half struggles behind. Shaw looks to maintain his recent surge when the Cubs face the visiting Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game series. The Cubs are tied with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the National League Central, while the Royals are 4 1/2 games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League. Kansas City recorded a season-high run total in Monday's 12-4 win before being shut out for the 11th time on Tuesday. The Royals were stymied by Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, who pitched seven scoreless innings in the Cubs' 6-0 victory. Chicago center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong returned after missing one game with a bruised right knee and went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Shaw contributed two hits and an RBI and has hit safely in all five games since the All-Star break, batting .533 (8-for-15) with two home runs and five RBIs during the stretch. Despite Shaw's encouraging play over the past week, his disappointing batting average (.221) has led many to believe that Chicago could be shopping for a third baseman ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. For his part, Shaw said he is bringing a fresh perspective to the game following the All-Star break. "I think getting some time off was really important," Shaw said. "That was nice. Just kind of reassessing the first half and kind of realizing some of my motivations in the game allowed me to feel a little more comfortable in the box." Chicago will send right-hander Colin Rea (8-3, 3.80 ERA) to the mound in the series finale. He won his fourth straight start last Friday in a 4-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Rea, 35, gave up one run over five frames in the outing and has allowed a total of five runs across 23 2/3 innings over his last four starts. Jonathan India is 2-for-10 (.200) with a home run against Rea, who has a 7.71 ERA in three career games (two starts) versus Kansas City. The Royals will counter with right-hander Seth Lugo (6-5, 2.94), who allowed a season-high five runs in six innings and received a no-decision against the Miami Marlins last Friday. Lugo, 35, has posted a 3.93 ERA in three outings this month after going 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA in five outings in June. Dansby Swanson is 2-for-18 (.111) against Lugo, who is 0-4 with a 5.91 ERA in 14 career games (four starts) versus the Cubs. The Royals are hoping to bounce back after being held to six singles in Tuesday's loss, including one by catcher Salvador Perez. Perez, 35, is batting .359 with eight home runs and 17 RBIs in his last 17 games. "It's a long season, just trying to make adjustments," Perez said. "My first half was a little slow, and I just kept working, talking to my hitting coach. I try to do my best every time I step out to home plate and help my team to win." --Field Level Media
