Audi A6 e-tron: Audi's aero chief on the future of car design
Welcome to part two of our exclusive four-part interview series, where we're endeavouring to find out what Audi's iconic slogan – Vorsprung durch Technik, or progress through technology – means to the people at the forefront of Audi design and engineering.
Here we venture inside Audi's state-of-the-art, top-secret windtunnel in Ingolstadt, Germany, to sit down with head of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, Dr. Moni Islam.

Introduce yourself and what you do...
I'm Dr. Moni Islam and I'm the head of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics development, which means in practice that I have several different tasks. On the one hand, I'm responsible for overseeing the development process for these two technical disciplines for all Audi production vehicles from their initial conception all the way up to the start of production.
On the other hand, I'm responsible for ensuring that in my department we work with the relevant technologies and processes that enable top-class results.
What's your personal interpretation of Vorsprung durch Technik?
For me personally, Vorsprung durch Technik means pushing the boundaries of technological innovation to do something that hasn't been done before.
As an engineer, I like to do things that are new and difficult, and I find it really cool to do things that others can't do or haven't done before. Being able to do this here is what first brought me to Audi many years ago.
Which project have you been most proud of at Audi? One that you think channels the Vorsprung durch Technik spirit.
I think it would be a project that wasn't so much in the public limelight, but had a very big impact on the way the industry works in our technical discipline. A number of years ago we worked on developing a groundbreaking new software technology for aerodynamics simulations, which gave us a significant advantage in accuracy and flexibility.
People thought it couldn't be done, so when we went public with it, it took the entire industry by surprise, because we showed that it was in fact possible, and we were the first team to achieve this globally.
Aerodynamic innovation has been at the very heart of Audi's Vorsprung durch Technik philosophy for more than 50 years. Which models throughout Audi's history brought the biggest steps forward in aero design and efficiency?
There is no doubt that the Audi 100 in 1982 and the Audi A2 in 1999 were the two biggest innovators in the world of combustion-engine vehicles. Both were driven by the need to significantly improve fuel consumption and so their design was fundamentally aero-driven.
At the time, the very streamlined greenhouse, the flush glazing, and the aerodynamically optimised body trim of the Audi 100 were quite revolutionary in automobile design. The A2 also pushed the boundaries of car design with its proportions based on the work of Wunibald Kamm, and its optimised underbody and wheels.
Now that we've entered the era of EVs, I am very impressed by what we achieved with our e-tron GT and A6 e-tron. In a very general sense, I'm proud that we were able to demonstrate with these two vehicles that there is no fundamental incompatibility between top-notch aerodynamics and progressive, eye-catching design.
In the case of the e-tron GT, we were able to make use of active vehicle components to achieve outstanding aerodynamics results, while the A6 e-tron makes use of a vast number of detailed engineering solutions to reach its optimum.
On that note, what inherent advantages does electrification bring to the worlds of aerodynamic design and efficiency? And what about disadvantages? How is Audi overcoming these?
Electrification has given a huge boost to us aerodynamicists, because efficiency is now of such paramount importance, and in real-world driving, aerodynamic drag is the dominant driving resistance. And because driving range is so important to our customers, it becomes financially viable for us to include technical measures in the vehicle that reduce its drag that wouldn't previously have been possible.
In terms of the vehicle concept, electric vehicles have a number of significant advantages for us. First, there's the completely closed and flat underbody, which is really an aerodynamicist's dream. Then, because the electric powertrain is so efficient, the cooling-air requirements while driving are far easier to deal with than in combustion engines.
The biggest disadvantage for the vehicle's aerodynamics derives from the size and weight of the battery. These create the necessity for large, wide wheels, which present us with a very big challenge, while also increasing the frontal area of the vehicle.
In the case of the former, we now place considerable effort in the aerodynamic optimisation of rims and tyres and generally offer our customers a variety of aero rims in our new cars. We do this together with our exterior designers, so these rims are really very aesthetically attractive, not just efficient!
Why is aerodynamic efficiency so important for drivers, especially in the electric era?
For many if not most people, aerodynamics is something very abstract, perhaps because it deals with complex physics and mathematics, but likely also because one can't see its effect frequently in everyday life.
As I mentioned earlier, as a driver of an all-electric Audi e-tron you can feel the effects of aerodynamic optimisation by virtue of options like the aero rims or the air suspension and the effect that they have on improving the vehicle's driving range and energy consumption. More generally though, the large driving range that a vehicle like the A6 e-tron enables, at over 750km, is a direct consequence of the vehicle's top-class aerodynamics.
But our innovation as aerodynamicists also has other consequences: One of the goals of our work is to come up with technical solutions that give our exterior designers as much freedom as possible to realise progressive aesthetics of the vehicle. So we work on optimising areas of the vehicle that aren't immediately visible, like the cooling-air intake or the underbody, or we create technical solutions together which work for both of us, like attractive aero rims.
And last but not least, we also spend a lot of time on optimising the aeroacoustics, which our customers directly experience as very low wind noise when they travel in an Audi.
What advances in wind tunnel and computer-aided design technology is Audi making to ensure its cars are at the cutting-edge of aerodynamic design?
I'm very thankful for the fact that we have excellent tools at our disposal to work with here at Audi.
Our wind tunnel was the first automotive wind tunnel to combine full ground simulation for aerodynamics with top-class aeroacoustics functionality, some of which was even patented by us. It has now been in operation for 25 years, and because we not only work here, but run and maintain the facility ourselves, we have built up a treasure trove of expertise that is really irreplaceable.
A very important recent booster for productivity and accuracy in our work in the wind tunnel has been the advent of rapid-prototyping technology, also known as 3D printing. It's been in use in Formula 1 development for quite some time, but now it's a standard for us as well…
And, it has really raised the bar for our other key tool, computer simulation, because our wind-tunnel tests have made a big leap in accuracy and efficiency. To give you a feel for what magnitude of computing resources we work with, we have 60,000 processor cores at our disposal, and last year we ran simulations totalling nearly 300 million CPU-hours.
For the A6 e-tron alone we did more than 3000 simulations to optimise the shape and supplement our wind-tunnel tests. Modern aerodynamics development is in my view inconceivable without using computer simulations and wind-tunnel testing hand in hand.
The Audi A6 e-tron is the most aerodynamic car Audi has ever created. How has this been achieved?
Probably the most visible aerodynamic highlight is the optional virtual wing mirror, which is in its second generation on the A6 e-tron. Already in the WLTP certification cycle it results in about 7km more driving range, but over longer distances at constant speeds it offers an even greater advantage.
The active inlet shutters offer dynamic control of the cooling-air flow tailored to the needs of the vehicle's thermal management system and thereby create an optimum for the flow of air through the vehicle.
The optional air suspension also improves the vehicle's aerodynamics, by lowering its ride height during motorway driving. Everything else in the vehicle's aerodynamics has to do with the many, many details of the aerodynamic design – ranging from the design of the rear diffuser in the underbody to the details of the tyre design. It's only through the cumulative effect of all these details, and the optimisation of their interaction with each other, that we were able to reach the spectacularly low drag coefficient of 0.21.
Where do you think Vorsprung durch Technik will take Audi in the future?
For us aerodynamicists, I think Vorsprung durch Technik will lead us towards cutting-edge analysis and development methods, like artificial intelligence and even more computer simulations.
For our vehicles, it will take them even closer to the physical limit of what is possible in drag-coefficient reduction – and there is definitely a limit! – all the while making sure that an Audi always remains an Audi.

Piastri wins rain-delayed Belgian GP after Norris overtake
Oscar Piastri passed McLaren team-mate Lando Norris on the first racing lap of a wet-dry Belgian Grand Prix to take his sixth victory of the year and extend his championship lead. The Australian swept past Norris as the race started after an hour-and-a-half delay for heavy rain and two laps behind the safety car and controlled the race from there. Norris' side of the McLaren team chose a divergent tyre strategy when the drivers pitted to switch to slick, dry-weather tyres as the track dried. The hope was that Norris would be able to go to the end on the hard tyres chosen while Piastri, who stopped one lap earlier, would have to make a pit stop for a second set of his mediums. But Piastri, despite expressing initial misgivings about whether his rubber would last, made it to the end without stopping again. His impressive win, mixing keen racing instinct with calm tyre management, moves him 16 points clear in the championship heading to the Hungarian Grand Prix next weekend. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc hung on ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen in the tricky opening laps on a wet track despite using a lower-downforce set-up, and was able to consolidate the final podium place in the dry part of the race. Verstappen took fourth in a largely static race and is now 81 points behind Piastri in the championship, his hopes all but over. Mercedes' George Russell took fifth after passing Williams' Alex Albon in the wet early stages, while Lewis Hamilton drove an excellent race to take seventh from his pit lane start. Another decisive move from Piastri Piastri sealed his win with a trademark committed, decisive move on Norris when the conditions were at their most treacherous when the race finally started. The original start was abandoned because of heavy rain and poor visibility after formation lap behind the safety car. The drivers then sat in the pit lane for an hour and 20 minutes, followed by four laps behind the safety car before the race was finally allowed to start 90 minutes later than scheduled. Piastri tracked Norris closely through the first corner and through the high-speed swerves at East Rouge before diving around the outside into the les Combes chicane at the end of the long Kemmel straight. Norris complained over the radio that he was down on battery power, but was told he had used it up at the start behind the safety car. And after the race he admitted that Piastri had simply done a better first lap by pushing harder through Eau Rouge, where in the wet drivers have to choose how much to lift off, when it is flat in the dry. "Oscar did a good job, nothing more to say," Norris said. "Committed a bit more through Eau Rouge and had the slipstream and got the run and that was it. Love to be up top but Oscar deserved it today." Piastri said: "I knew that lap one was going to be probably my best chance of winning the race. "I got a good exit out of Turn One and then lifted as little as ai dared through Eau Rouge and it worked out pretty well. We had it mostly under control after that. "I was a bit disappointed it was a rolling start because I thought that would take away some opportunity but when I was that close I knew I was going to lift a little bit less than Lando did. A bit lively over the hill but then the slipstream helped me out." Once in front, Piastri inched away in the lead until he was just under two seconds in front when he chose to stop for slick tyres on lap 12, his position in front giving him priority on stop timing and forcing Norris into a difficult position. Piastri fitted the medium tyres while Norris had to do an extra lap on a drying track on highly worn intermediate tyres. His engineer asked him if he would like hard tyres and try to run to the end, a decision Norris agreed with, and he rejoined 9.1 seconds back from Piastri after his stop. By around lap 20, Piastri told his engineer that he thought it would be "tough" to get his intermediates to the end but for a long time he held the lead at about eight seconds or so, and it slowly became apparent that he had decided not to stop again. In the final few laps, Norris began to make significant inroads into Piastri's lead, and was within four seconds of the leader with three laps to go. But Piastri managed the gap expertly to win by 3.4 seconds. Behind the leaders, the drivers were stuck in their positions after the pit stops, even if there was some tension for Leclerc as Verstappen pushed him hard in the closing laps. Much of the excitement in the race was provided by Hamilton. The seven-time champion started from the pit lane after Ferrari decided to change his set-up after his error in exceeding track limits in qualifying left him down in 16th on the grid. And Hamilton justified the decision with a series of excellent, improvisational overtaking moves to move up to 13th place before becoming the first driver to stop for slicks on lap 11, one before Piastri. That won him a chunk more places, and Hamilton was promoted to seventh by the pit-stop period, which he held to the end of the race. Official: Deportivo Alavés star seals €16m Ligue 1 switch
La Liga outfit Deportivo Alavés have this weekend secured for themselves a significant cash injection. This comes after attacker Joaquín Panichelli's long-rumoured departure from the club was finally made official. Panichelli, for his part, spent this past season out on loan away from Alavés. Not yet considered ready to be a regular contributor at Mendizorroza, the Argentine made the move to Spain's 2nd tier, with CD Mirandés. And to say that Panichelli went on to enjoy a productive stint on the books of Mirandés would be putting it lightly… All told, across 44 appearances in La Liga 2, the 22-year-old racked up a head-turning 29 direct goal contributions. Such exploits did not go unnoticed across the continent, with Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg, for one, having recently opened talks with their Alavés counterparts in an effort to beat out the stiff competition for Panichelli's signature. And as alluded to above, this weekend, such negotiations have officially borne fruit. As per a statement across Alavés' website and social media platforms on Sunday: 'Deportivo Alavés and RC Strasbourg Alsace have reached an agreement for the transfer of striker Joaquín Panichelli to the French club.' Belgian Grand Prix briefing: Piastri wins, Hamilton impresses after chaotic start
McLaren's Oscar Piastri overtook his teammate and championship rival Lando Norris in the opening stages of a rain-delayed Belgian Grand Prix to win and further extend his championship lead. The Athletic's experts, Luke Smith and Madeline Coleman, analyze the race's main talking points. If you'd had offered Lewis Hamilton a gain of 11 places in the race after what he called an 'unacceptable' qualifying result on Saturday, one would imagine he'd gladly have taken it. Advertisement And yet there was a moment in Sunday's race when the Ferrari driver was lighting up the timesheets as the fastest man on the circuit, meaning there's reason to think that finishing seventh would result in some mixed feelings. Ferrari's decision to start Hamilton from the pit lane after taking a new power unit also meant it could adjust the setup on his car, going for a higher downforce setup that would work better in the wet by offering more grip. In the early phase of the race, he put this to brilliant use, passing Carlos Sainz, Franco Colapinto and Nico Hülkenberg all in the space of a single lap to charge up the order. Hamilton was then the first driver to make the switch from intermediate to slick tires, fitting a set of mediums at the perfect time, again gaining him a bunch of places as others waited an extra lap or two before making the same move. He'd gone from the pit lane to seventh in just 14 laps. But that would ultimately prove to be Hamilton's ceiling. On a dry track, more downforce was less of a good thing, leaving him stuck watching the rear of Alex Albon's Williams for the remainder of the race. He sounded fired up on the radio as he tried hunting Albon down, taking in the info from race engineer Riccardo Adami over battery modes and different lines to make up the time. He simply couldn't get close enough, reporting at one point his car felt 'draggy as hell.' Ferrari's updated suspension, designed to resolve the ride height issue that has plagued it since its double disqualification in China, seems to have provided a step forward. A top-five was surely on the cards for Hamilton without his track limits faux pas. But it was fun, even for the opening quarter of the race, to see Hamilton back on the charge; a glimmer of better things soon to come through his tricky first year wearing Ferrari red. Luke Smith One may have expected a battle to brew between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen given how fine the margins were between the two during qualifying. The Ferrari driver qualified just 0.003 seconds quicker than the reigning world champion. 'I don't know yet,' Leclerc said Saturday when asked if he could keep Verstappen behind come race day, adding that he hoped the rear suspension upgrade had given Ferrari the 'upper hand' over the Red Bull. Advertisement As expected, Verstappen was all over the back of Leclerc's car during the opening stages of the race, looking for a moment to dive past. But the opportunity never came, a gap steadily growing as the race wore on. It hovered in the two-second realm for a good chunk of the race before ending at around 1.5 seconds as the Red Bull driver made another push in the closing stages. By Lap 34, Leclerc was nearly 11 seconds behind the McLaren duo but a podium finish is a strong sign for Ferrari, which has struggled in recent weeks. So what does this mean for the remainder of the season? When asked on Saturday whether it gives him confidence for the second half of the season, Leclerc said 'yes and no,' pointing at the gap to McLaren that is at multiple tenths of a second. 'We'll do a step forward. I don't think though that we'll find those three or four tenths in that upgrade. But it will help us to get closer. The more we use it, the more we'll be able to maximize this and there'll be some more potential to gain. But no, I don't think it's enough to be able to challenge the McLaren consistently from now on.' Right now, Leclerc seems to be right. The gap was quite large to the McLaren duo by the end, but it could help Ferrari keep a stronger hold on second in the constructor standings. Madeline Coleman There were concerning flashbacks to 2021 when heavy rain started to fall as the cars assembled on the grid in the lead-up to lights out. Four years ago, the Belgian Grand Prix lasted just two laps, both completed behind the safety car, as showers washed out proceedings on what was a disappointing day for F1. We had to wait more than an hour before the FIA deemed conditions were good enough to go racing after drivers reported poor visibility during their initial formation lap behind the safety car. The call to throw a red flag was criticized by some, including Max Verstappen, and there was some logic to that concern given the rain only then grew heavier. There was a risk the best window to get in some laps had been missed. Advertisement In the end, the decision to wait proved to be entirely correct. The race finally went green at 4:20 p.m. local time, having been slated to start at 3 p.m., and after four laps behind the safety car, we were able to go green at last. F1's red flag resumption rules do seem to lack flexibility, given the rain had long stopped and the sun had been out a while before we got going, with a 15-minute restart window required before the cars could leave the pits. That's maybe something that could be looked at in the future. And this generation of cars have notoriously been poor for visibility when trailing others in the rain due to the ground-effect designs, kicking up more spray. But credit should go to race officials for making the right call in the end, putting safety first and, impressively, getting a complete race distance at Spa. Luke Smith
