Key stats, star players and favourites -meet Euro 2025 final four

BBC News20-07-2025
The Euro 2025 semi-finals are decided - defending champions England will take on Italy on Tuesday before Spain meet Germany on Wednesday. But how did they get here? Which players have stood out? And what are their chances of lifting the trophy in Basel on 27 July?BBC Sport takes a look.
Italy
Goals scored: Five Goals conceded: Five Wins: Three Best Euros performance: Runners-up, 1993 and 1997Chance of winning Euro 2025 (Opta): 8.9%Italy are the lowest-ranked team left in the tournament at 13th in the Fifa world rankings but after their impressive performance against Norway in the last eight it would be foolish to underestimate them. They failed to qualify for four successive World Cups between 2003 and 2015 and have flown under the radar in Switzerland to reach a first European semi-final since 1997.Progressing behind Spain in Group B they were the underdogs heading into the quarter-final against two-time European champions Norway, but they impressed with their pace, control in possession and natural width.Key player: Captain Cristiana Girelli scored both goals in the 2-1 victory with the crucial winning goal a dramatic stoppage-time header.Former England defender Anita Asante said it was "special" for a "senior veteran in the team" to deliver in that moment."They're reflecting the growth of Italian women's football. Italy found a bit of quality when it really mattered and capitalised," she said. What the pundits said: Former Lionesses captain Steph Houghton said defending champions England will need to be "mindful" of Italy's underdog status."Knocking out Norway, who were higher ranked than them, that probably was not the expectation from the outside," she said."They have experience in their team. They have some threats, especially in wide areas, and really good midfielders."This is monumental for them. They've made another historic progression so they're going to be well up for it."Standout stat: At the age of 35 years and 84 days, Girelli became the oldest ever player to score more than once for a European nation in a single match at a major tournament.
England
Goals scored: 13 Goals conceded: Five Wins: Three Best Euros performance: Winners 2022Chance of winning Euro 2025 (Opta): 36.5%Defending champions England booked their place in the semi-finals with victory over Sweden but did things the hard way.The Lionesses came from 2-0 down to force extra time and then penalties. Of the 14 penalties taken, five were scored, six were saved and three were missed. It summed up England's tournament so far with the Lionesses not fully firing but still finding a way to win. What the pundits said: "The mentality of those players to step up. Even those who missed, the mentality to still put your hand up and say I want to take a penalty [is so strong]," said Houghton.Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis added: "These girls just keep making history. To come back from 2-0 down in the knockout stages, to come back and show the resilience and determination, the never-say-die attitude."When it comes to who has stood out, consistency has been somewhat lacking but goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, veteran defender Lucy Bronze and winger Lauren Hemp have all enjoyed big moments.Key player: Chelsea forward Lauren James has long been predicted to be a top player for England and at this tournament she has once again shown why that is the case. She stepped up in the 4-0 group-stage thrashing of the Netherlands following criticism in the opening-game defeat by France, then impressed again against Wales."There's no ceiling on her talent - we're looking at a potential global star," England and Brighton forward Nikita Parris said.Standout stat: England became the first team to progress from a knockout tie at the Women's European Championship having trailed by two or more goals.
Spain
Goals scored: 16 Goals conceded: Four Wins: Four Best Euros performance: Third, 1997Chance of winning Euro 2025: 31.1%Spain are aiming to add European glory to their 2023 World Cup triumph.Surprise winners in Australia two years ago, they have since emerged as the dominant force in the women's game - adding the Women's Nations League to their trophy cabinet last year and looking like the team to beat in Switzerland.Their quarter-final victory over the host nation was uncomfortable at times but they ultimately found a way to win. What the pundits said: "Any time you stay in possession like they do in the final third, it's impossible not to score," Parris said."The amount of chances that they create, the possession, the intricate play and the comradery and connectivity this team has is something special. I think they will break many teams down."With an abundance of talent at their disposal it is difficult to pick out just one key player.Key player: Forward Esther Gonzalez, who leads the race for the Golden Boot, three-time Champions League-winning midfielder Aitana Bonmati and Claudia Pina have all impressed. But two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has stood out having missed the 2022 tournament after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The Barcelona midfielder has been making up for lost time on the European stage, scoring three goals and assisting four more."It is her goal involvements," said former England captain Steph Houghton. "She missed the last Euros through injury and she's really taken hold of the Spanish team in the group stages. She's been a standout."Standout stat: Spain have scored 16 goals at Euro 2025 - only England in 2022 (22) and Germany in 2009 (21) have netted more in a finals.
Germany
Goals scored: Six Goals conceded: Six Wins: Three Best Euros performance: Eight-time championsChance of winning Euro 2025: 23.5%Beaten finalists in 2022 when they lost to England, Germany are eight-time European champions but last won the title in 2013.It has been a disrupted campaign in Switzerland, with inconsistent results.Victory over Poland in their opening match was marred by a tournament-ending injury to captain Giulia Gwinn before they had to come from behind against Denmark.A 4-1 thrashing by Sweden saw Carlotta Wamser sent off in the 31st minute, while another red card in the quarter-final against France - this time for Kathrin Hendrich in the 13th minute - set the tone for a chaotic encounter.Despite having to play the rest of the 90 minutes plus extra time and penalties with 10 players, Germany showed togetherness to get the job done and secure a semi-final meeting with Spain. What the pundits said: "Germany will take such confidence in the resilience and the response since going down to 10 players, which can be a psychological uplift. If I was Spain I would probably want to play France," said former England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley."For Germany it's about mindset, self belief and using the confidence that you have built by getting through that game, and using it," she said.Key player: Jule Brand is Germany's top goalscorer with two goals and two assists, but goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger got the plaudits for their quarter-final win. She made nine saves against France, including stopping two penalties in the shootout, as well as scoring what proved to be the winning penalty.Standout stat: Germany have led for just 82 minutes across their four matches at Euro 2025.

Prince William takes Princess Charlotte, 10, on sweet father-daughter outing to cheer the Lionesses at the Women's Euro final

Prince William has been pictured taking his daughter Charlotte, 10, on a sweet father-daughter outing to cheer on the Lionesses at the Women's Euro final. The Royal's appearance was widely-anticipated at the stadium in Switzerland tonight with sources confirming he would be there to support the team. In a social media post, he had said: 'Good luck to the Lionesses tomorrow. 'The nation is so proud you are through to the final, after some stunning comebacks! We are all cheering you on!' Charlotte was snapped this afternoon standing close to her father in a sweet blue polka dot dress. The Royal Family also kicked off well-wishes this morning with a post that read 'Let's go girls!!' as fans all over the nation decked out windows with England flags. It comes as the boyfriend of England star Ella Toone backed the Lionesses today ahead of their big game tonight where the squad will seek 'redemption' in the Women's Euro Final. Joe Bunney uploaded a post to social media today which he captioned 'Big day ahead. Redemption time. Come on girls' in reference to the team's nailbiting loss to Spain in the 2023 World Cup Final. England's women now have the opportunity to seek their revenge as they play the country tonight. Supporters watching the match in Basel, Switzerland were also pictured kitted out head-to-toe in red and white. In a post uploaded to X this morning the Royal Family shared a clip of guardsmen performing the iconic England anthem 'It's coming home' outside Buckingham Palace. The accompanying caption read: 'Let's go girls!! Wishing the very best of luck to the Lionesses in the Women's Euro Final this evening.' Downing Street also shared in the football fever as it decked outs its railing with bunting and displayed the flag of St George in its windows. Number 10 said: 'Good luck today, Lionesses. Let's bring it home.' Speaking to MailOnline at Wembley, where fans have gathered to show their support ahead of watching a livestream of the match, supporters told of their 'excitement' insisting 'we're going to win'. Sophie McCusker, who was joined by her three friends outside the stadium said: 'We've come from Liphook, which is a small village, and are huge football fans. This is the biggest game of the ear. We're so excited. Number 10 Downing Street also got in the spirit as it sported the flag of St George on its windows and bunting on the railing England fans hold up a 'Proper England' banner as they participate in the fan walk to the stadium prior to the game The fanzone is already starting to fill up and photos show jubilant supporters dancing and enjoying a cool drink in the run-up to the game 'Women couldn't play football for what 50 years, I think we'll catch up with the men in 10. 'In the last few years the standard has just gone up and up. It's definitely beginning to be taken more seriously, we saw some dads on the way in here. 'Our dads are the reason we started playing, it would be so special if they were here.' Sophie's friend Genevieve Turner predicted the score as 2-1 extra time to England and 'maybe even penalties'. She said: 'I can't wait. We're going to win.' In contrast, Katie Fuller and Charlotte Brown, both 25, said they hadn't any predictions for the score and 'don't want to put any energy into it' and they 'didn't want it to go wrong'. Charlotte said: 'We were just out in Switzerland to watch the Norway game - it was wild. There were loads of English fans there. Some men as well, so it is happening. Men are coming. The atmosphere is gonna be insane. 'The atmosphere is going to be electric in there, we've been to the games at Wembley before so this is definitely the place to be.' Father and daughter John, 60, and Emma, 25, were also out enjoying the pre-match buzz. Emma said: 'We're local so we come to BoxPark all the time, the atmosphere in there is electric.' Her father, John, added: 'It's very different from the men's, much more friendly. It's better, more enjoyable. No drinks being thrown about or drugs, people are just there for a good time. It should be taken more seriously, hopefully if we win tonight it will all change.' The pair said they predicted a 2-1 win to England hoping the team score early and 'Spain won't be hogging the ball like in the man's games'. Phoebe, 16, was joined by her mother Carly, 46, outside Wembley. Predicting 2-0 to England, the pair said they were 'so nervous'. Carly added: 'I can't wait to see what the atmosphere will be like, we just got here so it will be interesting to see if it's different from the men's. We're just here to support women.' Some fans have also spoken of their disappointment as they say they were refused entry to BoxPark. The furious supporters had travelled from Cambridge having booked tickets six weeks ago when the event was free - but following England's progression to the final the event has now sold out and the group have been denied entry. Describing it as a 'complete scam', Jessica said: 'I'm just devastated, we've travelled all this way & we're such huge fans. There's people getting in there without England tops on & we're clearly dressed for the occasion.' Jasmine added: 'I play football so tonight means a lot to me, if we don't get in I'll be gutted. We will pay, we've got no issue with that, but they've point blank refused us entry.' Despite scenes elsewhere of jubilant supporters, Laura painted a different picture, saying: 'We've got here and there's no real atmosphere, no real support. If this were the men's the streets would be packed out. 'We're waiting to speak to the manager now - if we can't get in, we'll be gutted. Where are we supposed to go?' Meanwhile the fanzone in Basel, Switzerland has filled up fast and photos show jubilant supporters dancing and enjoying a cool drink in the run-up to the game. Some supporters have also got in the spirit with cardboard cut-outs of the players and large flags that read 'Lionesses Roar to the Final'. Other fans to share their good luck messages this morning included The Spice Girls. The Chase star and 'Dark Destroyer' Shaun Wallace said: 'Let's hope the Lionesses get the gift of a great performance and bringing it home tonight! Make the most of everyday, every day is a gift. 'Have a fantastic Sunday and good luck to the Lionesses tonight.' This evening's match will begin at 5pm as England bids for its second title in a row following the team's victory against Spain in the previous tournament. England's captain Leah Williamson said the team are 'aware' and 'connected' to what it would mean if the nation won today. She added: 'I think we don't necessarily carry the weight of it [the expectations] and how much it means to people, but we are aware of it because it means the same to us. 'We recognise the opportunity and will do everything we can to take it.' The Lionesses faced a tough group in the initial stages but sailed through to the knockout rounds. A dramatic penalty shootout saw them emerge victorious in the quarter-final against Sweden. Some fans are also getting the fanfare going with cardboard cut-outs of the players and large flags that read 'Lionesses Roar to the Final' And then they beat Italy 2-1 in extra time in the semi-final - marking another stunning comeback. England and Spain remain the two best sides in Europe - though the Lionesses are expected to be in for a tough fight if they wish to emerge victorious, as Spain won their most recent match 2-1 on June 3. They will also be looking for redemption against Spain, who edged them 1-0 in the 2023 Women's World Cup final. Messages of support have also poured in from the likes of the cast of EastEnders, with Heather Pearce - who plays the character Eve Panesar-Unwin in the British sitcom - saying: 'You've already done us proud and you've inspired a nation - particularly my three little girls.' She added on behalf of the cast: 'We wish you all the luck on Sunday night.' Prince William is expected to be at the stadium in Switzerland tonight at the St Jakob-Park stadium cheering the Lionesses on. In a social media post, he said: 'Good luck to the Lionesses tomorrow. 'The nation is so proud you are through to the final, after some stunning comebacks! We are all cheering you on!' Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: 'Into the final and inspiring the nation. Let's bring it home.' Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson added the team had 'absolutely smashed it', saying 'everybody is so proud of you'. One England fan joked to Sky News he 'had hair' before England's nerve-racking run to the final. He added: 'I'm a bit nervous but fingers crossed - we're going to win.' Today's match kicks off at 5pm UK time in Basel, Switzerland, and will be broadcast live on both BBC One and ITV1.

Spice Girls' 'Girl Power' tribute as they lead celeb support of England's Euro 2025 final

Celebrities joined England fans in wishing the Lionesses the best of luck ahead of tonight's Euro 2025 final showdown with Spain in Basel, Switzerland Celebrities are gathering in force to pay special tribute to England Women's football team as they bid for back-to-back European success tonight. The Lionesses take on Spain in Basel, Switzerland, hoping to lift the Euro trophy once again, three years on from their maiden success. ‌ However, they know they are up against it as they face a Spanish side who defeated them in the World Cup final in 2023. In preparation, the group has been turning up the volume to Heather Small's Proud tune as they keep their pre-game ritual in tact. ‌ But as Serena Wiegman's team gets their game face on for once last hurdle in the tournament, celebs have took to social media to send their own messages of support. ‌ Among them was the Spice Girls. The iconic girl band's official Instagram and Twitter /X accounts shared the same message alongside a snap of the group - minus Victoria Beckham - posing on stage. Melanie C also wore an England shirt in the image, as their rallying call read: Come on @Lionesses! We wish you the best of luck for the #WEURO2025 final today #GirlPower @England" EastEnders star and staunch football fan Ross Kemp give a video message to the girls, saying: "I just want to wish the Lionesses all the very very best against Spain. You have the skill, you have the mindset, you have the talent, and you have backing so come on England and come on the Lionesses." ‌ Quiz show guru Shaun Wallace, best known as The Dark Destroyer on ITV's The Chase also shared two video messages in support. His first saw him give an inspirational quote. He also captioned his post: "Let's hope the Lionesses get the gift of a great performance and bringing it home tonight! Make the most of everyday, every day is a gift. Have a fantastic Sunday and good luck to the Lionesses tonight." ‌ He quickly followed it up with another message, saying: "Bring it home Lionesses," with a video of him saying: "This is a special message for the England Lionesses. Good luck today girls, let's bring that trophy home." The Royal Family's official account also gave a rousing message to the squad. It shared a superb version of It's Coming Home outside of Buckingham Palace. ‌ Alongside the upload, they wrote: "Let's go girls!! Wishing the very best of luck to the @Lionesses in the Women's Euro Final this evening. And Sarah Ferguson also gave them the royal seal of approval. Getting her message in early, she said on Friday: "We're all behind you Lionesses. Best of luck tomorrow!" The occasion comes almost three years to the day since Wiegman's team changed the face of women's football in England following their defeat of Germany in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley. On that occasion Chloe Kelly's extra-time winner would pass into English football folklore. Then, a little over a year later, there was heartbreak as Spain beat the Lionesses 1-0 in the World Cup final in Sydney. The result came despite the heroics of legendary goalkeeper Mary Earps. And now England is once again getting behind the team as they bid to lift another coveted trophy.

Commanders inducting Santana Moss into Ring of Fame

July 27 - The Washington Commanders will induct wide receiver Santana Moss into the franchise's Ring of Fame during the Sept. 7 season opener against the New York Giants, the team announced Sunday. Moss played the last 10 seasons (2005-14) of his NFL career with Washington following four seasons with the New York Jets (2001-04). He ranks third in Washington franchise history in career catches (581), fourth in receiving yards (7,867) and seventh in touchdown receptions (47). Moss made his lone Pro Bowl in his first year in the nation's capital, catching 84 passes for a career-high 1,483 yards and nine TDs. His yardage total remains the Washington single-season record. The Commanders surprised Moss, 46, during a live broadcast with the team at training camp in Ashburn, Va. He was surrounded by friends and family members wearing burgundy caps with "MOSS" on the front and his jersey No. 89 on the sides. "Normally, I am so nonchalant," an emotional Moss said. "I don't know how to take in stuff, but man, that one right there ... I don't want to show my tears, but I'm about to shed some. I appreciate that news." Drafted in the first round (16th overall) by the Jets in 2001, Moss retired with 732 receptions for 10,283 yards and 66 scores in 197 games (135 starts). He had 24 100-yard games and four 1,000-yard seasons. --Field Level Media
