From Sandton to the world: Redhill netball team makes history on the world stage

Time Out16-07-2025
Johannesburg is buzzing with pride after Redhill School' s U17 netball team made history by bringing home gold at the 2025 World School Netball Cup. The Sandton-based school is now officially the first South African school to ever take the top spot in the prestigious international tournament, and they did it with serious style.
Held in Loughborough, England, the annual World School Netball Cup attracts the best young talent from across the globe. Redhill not only held their own but dominated the court, outplaying elite teams from Australia, England, New Zealand and beyond to claim the title.
This isn't just a win, it's a watershed moment for school sport in South Africa. The Redhill team showed off not just athleticism, grit and technical brilliance, but the kind of teamwork and spirit that champions are made of.
"It was surreal and emotional. Seeing our girls lift that trophy after going unbeaten in every match was something I'll never forget,' head coach Ashleigh Gray told TimesLive. 'This was our first time competing in the World School Games, and to walk away not only as participants but as champions, representing South Africa with pride, was a moment of magic,' she added.
With netball's profile rising rapidly, especially in the wake of last year's Netball World Cup hosted on local soil, this win adds fuel to the fire. It's a moment of inspiration for the next generation of athletes, and a major reminder that South African teams can compete and win on any stage.
This is just the beginning for many of these rising stars. For now, though, Joburg can take a collective victory lap, because Redhill just put us on the map in the most unforgettable way.

Stephen Gallacher had mixed feelings after marking his ISPS HANDA Senior Open debut with a sub-par effort at Sunningdale. On the one hand, the former Ryder Cup player was pleased to sign for a two-under-par 68, which left him sitting in the top 20 at the end of the opening round. Stephen Gallacher signed for a two-under-par 70 on his debut in the ISPS HANDA Senior Open at Sunningdale | Getty Images 'I left a bit out there, to be honest,' he said after covering the first ten holes in four under before dropping shots at the 12th and 18th at the Berkshire venue. 'I only missed one green and two fairways, just didn't hole the putts. 'My golf was very strong. Disappointed to bogey the last but, apart from that, it was okay as it's not an easy course at all. The wind was swirling a little bit, so under par is not a bad start.' Alker, who has been one of the dominant forces in the senior ranks since turning 50, signed for an eagle and six birdies while defending champion K.J. Choi and US Senior Open champion Padraig Harrington also made strong starts. 'Good thing about being out here is that you feel you can win again' But, having already given a good account of himself in his two senior major appearances this year, Gallacher said: 'The good thing about being out here is that you feel you can compete and win again. 'When you were getting to 48 and 49 and playing well but just making the cut, it's a tough one mentally to get your head round. 'Out here the mindset is different. You are trying to get in contention on a Sunday and that's what you play golf for. It kind of rejuvenates you a bit.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad
