Lebanese Foreign Ministry to summon Iranian Ambassador over disarmament post on X

LBCI22-04-2025
The Lebanese Foreign Ministry is set to summon Iran's Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, in the coming days following a controversial post he published on X regarding the issue of disarmament.
In the tweet, Amani criticized global disarmament efforts as a "clear conspiracy against nations," singling out the United States for arming Israel while pressuring other countries to disarm or weaken their military forces. He warned that nations that yield to such demands become vulnerable to occupation, citing Iraq, Libya, and Syria as examples.
"We in the Islamic Republic of Iran are aware of the dangers of this conspiracy and its impact on regional security," Amani wrote.
"Preserving deterrent capabilities is the first line of defense for sovereignty and independence, and should not be compromised."

Barrack reportedly threatens Lebanese with sanctions over corruption

During his latest visit to Beirut, U.S. envoy Tom Barrack expressed Washington's concern that 'Lebanon might again drown in the same previous policies' in the conduct of both its government and parliament, al-Akhbar newspaper quoted an informed source as saying. One of those who met with Barrack said the latter tackled the era of former Central Bank governor Riad Salameh and said 'Washington does not want to revisit past issues nor to hold accountable all those who were responsible for that period,' the source added. Washington has however decided to 'put everyone under constant scrutiny' and 'should it sense that top officials have resumed the same policies, whether they are officials, politicians or bankers, there will be a surprise for the Lebanese, seeing as sanctions will be imposed on a lot of those whom the Lebanese people hope to see punished,' the source said.

Berri continues to obstruct the draft law of expatriate voting rights in Lebanon

MP George Adwan expressed his shock at the failure to include an urgent bill regarding an amendment to expatriate voting on the legislative session's agenda, noting that this is the first time in 30 years that a similar bill has been submitted without being included. He continued, 'We asked Speaker Nabih Berri at the beginning of the session why the bill was not included, and we emphasized that non-resident voting is a national issue par excellence.' He explained that more than half of MPs from various blocs supported the proposal, and all the conditions were favorable for its inclusion on the agenda. He added, 'We want to expedite legislation, not obstruct it, especially since preparing for the elections requires respecting legal deadlines. If this amendment is not passed today, we will face problems both domestically and internationally.' According to Lebanese media reports , abolishing expatriate voting is preferred by the Shiite-duo of Amal and Hezbollah , even though there are hundreds of thousands of Shiite expatriates throughout the world Berri , 87, who has held the position for over 3 decades ( since 1992), was re-elected in 2022 for his seventh term. There are many MPs who are calling for a new Speaker in Lebanon. His obstruction of the draft law governing the expats could expedite the vote to replace him, according to Lebanese media reports .
