As every seasoned bowler knows, true mastery on the green is far more than simply delivering a bowl accurately. It's a delicate dance of technical precision, strategic insight, adaptability and unwavering consistency. This past weekend, the PNB Masters showcased these qualities in full force.
At the close of play on Saturday, the log standings were a tease for what Sunday had in store. The margins were razor-thin and anticipation ran high.
In the Men's Open, Section 1 leader Jarred Bauristhene had edged two points ahead of Wayne Roberts, with the draw having them facing each in the final sectional game. Section 2 mirrored the drama: Marc Rodgers led Ruaan Victor by one point, and the two were drawn against each other in a winner-takes-all clash.

The Men's Veterans offered their own nail-biters. Section 1 front-runner John Connellan and Louis Tolmay were separated by a single point, while in Section 2, Roger Boulle led Rodney Ward only on aggregate. Sunday morning was set to test composure and class.
In the Women's Open, Section 1 saw a pivotal showdown between Glenda Matthews and Susan Nel—so close that a single shot on aggregate separated them. Section 2 was even tighter, with Michelle Gerber and Linda Tolmay level on points and only aggregate giving Gerber a slight edge. But Nel and Tolmay turned the tables in their final games and booked their spots in the title clash.

The women's veterans continued the trend. Gail Jennings led Judy Green by a point in Section 1. In Section 2, it was equal points for Minette Hatton-Jones and Lorna Drake, with Hatton-Jones just edging it on aggregate. The drama was undeniable.
And then came Sunday.
In the Men's Open, Bauristhene and Rodgers both rose to the occasion, defeating Roberts and Victor respectively, to earn their final berths. In the final, Rodgers wasted no time asserting control and stormed to 21 shots in just 14 ends—claiming his first PNB Masters title. In the Veterans, Boulle was equally emphatic, joining Rodgers in the winners' circle with his own clinical 21-shot finish over 14 ends.

All eyes on Damian Willemse after last wearing Springboks' jersey during 2023 victory parade

FILE - The last time Damian Willemse was seen in a Springboks jersey was during the trophy parade for winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France. Image: PHILL MAGAKOE / AFP The last time South Africans saw Damian Willemse in a Springbok jersey was during the early part of the 2023 Rugby World Cup victory parade through the streets of South Africa. Nobody could get Willemse out of the kit he wore with much distinction during that World Cup-final win over the All Blacks. It was probably only after the stench of the kit got to the players on the bus that it decided he needed a fresh outfit. Unfortunately, Willemse hasn't worn the Springboks jersey since sustaining a couple of injuries that kept him out of the entire 2024 international season. The jersey he cherishes so much was taken away from him. A lot has changed since Damian Willemse last wore the No 15 jersey, as the Sharks' Aphelele Fassi having a breakout 2024 to put him top of the list as far as the fullback berth is concerned. Veteran Willie le Roux is also still going strong and is on the cusp of his 100th Test in the green and gold. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Fassi made eight starts at fullback in Willemse's absence in 2024 after seemingly leapfrogging Le Roux as the Boks first-choice No 15. 'The Weekend Special' - a nickname Fassi earned because his surname is similar to South Africa's music legend Brenda Fassie - played in most of the big matches for the Boks. He faced the All Blacks in Johannesburg, Argentina in the Rugby Championship decider in Mbombela and featured in the big November Test against England at Twickenham. Fassi also started in the season opener against the Barbarians as Willemse was still serving a suspension for a dangerous tackle while playing for the Stormers in a United Rugby Championship match. But this weekend, against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, Willemse will finally feature again in a Bok jersey after almost 20 months. Willemse certainly knows he is going to be in the spotlight after Fassi's bright performances. But the Strand-born player is keen to make up for lost time. 'I'm looking forward to it, very excited. Lots of nerves as well, it's my first Test match in a couple of years since the World Cup final,' Willemse told SuperSport TV this week ahead of the Italy clash. 'A lot has changed, especially at the international level. The rest of the boys who have played in the position have done an excellent job. They have set the standard. 'For me, coming in, I know there will be a lot of eyes on me. But I'm just focussed on my primary job. Hopefully I can have a good game.' Fassi has proven to be a lethal counter-attacking player in the new era of the Boks' offensive play. He cut the line beautifully last season, while he showed off his attacking kicks in the wet against the BaaBaas. But Willemse will also welcome the Boks' new style of play as a lethal runner from the back himself. The Stormers man has wonderful anticipation and can also slip in flyhalf to distribute when needed.

Willie le Roux on the brink of 100 caps as Springboks kick off Test season

Milestone in sight. Springbok veteran fullback Willie le Roux is set to play in his 99th match for the national side on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld should he come off the replacement bench. Image: BackpagePix Veteran Willie le Roux is set to earn his 99th cap for the Springboks off the bench on Saturday against Italy, with his century to follow shortly thereafter according to Bok mentor Rassie Erasmus. If all goes to plan in the first Test against the Italians and he is fit, Le Roux could run out in Gqeberha for his hundredth game for the national team. However, there is also a Georgia Test in Nelspruit where he could feature to get him to the milestone. Erasmus has set certain targets for the Boks over the next three games. Should they reach their first on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld (5pm kick-off), the home ground of Le Roux, the fullback will be on the verge of joining a select group of Springboks who have played in 100 Test matches. Next Stay Close ✕ Lock Eben Etzebeth (131 caps) is the only active centurion. Le Roux will join the company of decorated retired Bok rugby players like lock Victor Matfield (127), winger Bryan Habana (124), prop Tendai Mtawarira (117), front rower John Smith (111), centre Jean de Villiers (109) and fullback Percy Montgomery (102). 'We have three matches to get Willie to 100,' Erasmus said. 'He is in the mix this week, and hopefully, he goes on (as a replacement off the bench) and gets to 99. Then, in one of the other two matches, we will bring him in again. That said, we must make sure we get momentum and the things we want to do, we do it on our terms.' 'Some may be underestimating them, but as a team, we have a lot to lose if we let ourselves down on the field' ⚠#Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold — Springboks (@Springboks) July 2, 2025 By that, Erasmus means selecting the match-day squad according to what they want to achieve from a specific game and not on sentiment. Fullback Aphelele Fassi was the first player to wear the No 15 jumper against the Barbarians, while Damian Willemse is back from suspension and taking over in the first Test of the year. The duo is the in-form Bok fullbacks and set to play a more prominent role towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Willemse is, of course, a double World Cup winner alongside Le Roux but missed last season with injuries. The Lions' Quan Horn (24) is the young fullback in the Bok setup but has only played one Test so far.

Maduka takes charge at Magesi FC, vows to build on existing foundations

Former Royal AM coach John Maduka was unveiled as Magesi'snew coach on Thursday. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix John Maduka has described it as 'a special honour' to be appointed head coach of Magesi FC and expressed his satisfaction at working alongside long-serving assistant coach Jacky Ledwaba. Speaking at his unveiling in the Limpopo capital, the former Malawian international said there was no need to bring in his own technical team, as he did not want to tamper with a successful structure. 'You don't break something unnecessarily,' Maduka said. 'I strongly believe that the technical team here has been part of the club for a long time. They helped Magesi gain promotion all the way from the ABC Motsepe League to the PSL, so they are clearly capable and know their job. "If there's no need for me to bring in someone, why should I?' Next Stay Close ✕ Maduka takes over from Owen da Gama, who parted ways with the club after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Club management believe that Maduka — previously in charge of Royal AM — is the right man to take the team forward. Curiously, the club declined to reveal the length of Maduka's contract, with general manager Hero Makgamatha implying it was effectively a 'pay-as-you-go' deal. 'But we can strengthen the technical team if the need arises,' Maduka added. 'This is a special moment for me, an honour to work for Magesi, which is a very good team. It's a team that always wants to compete, and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.' Maduka has set his sights on a top-eight league finish and hopes the club can retain the Carling Knockout title they famously won in their maiden top-flight season. He replaces Da Gama, who helped Magesi avoid relegation after joining in December as a replacement for Clinton Larsen. Larsen had guided the club to promotion and led them to Carling Knockout glory with a shock 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns, but parted ways with the club after a poor run of league results. While Da Gama's tenure did not yield dramatic improvements, Magesi managed to stabilise under his leadership. Their ability to avoid defeat at their new home, the Seshego Stadium — having previously used the old Peter Mokaba Stadium — proved crucial in amassing enough points to retain their Premiership status, finishing in 13th place.
