How to get the most value for money on your North American holiday
It's also a reminder that an experience-packed holiday in the USA need not break the bank. Play it smart and an American adventure can be exceptional value for money.
A road trip adventure
Fortunately, one of the most memorable ways to explore the United States is also one of the most cost-effective. Hiring a car and road-tripping around the country brings freedom and flexibility to explore and discover. It's also relatively cheap – SUVs can often be hired for under £200 a week.
Having your own wheels also allows for great savings on accommodation and food. Nights can be spent in budget-friendly but characterful smaller towns with bargain motels and hearty family-run restaurants.
Classic road trip routes are also lined with free attractions, some delightfully silly, some photogenically beautiful, others drenched in history. Route 66, for example, is a barrage of absurdly kitsch giant fibreglass statues, picturesque state parks and heritage sites such as Abraham Lincoln's former home in Springfield, Illinois. Many don't have entrance fees.
Going off the beaten track
You don't have to stick to classic, well-worn routes. Pick any two big cities in the USA and there is plenty to do on the drive between them – with considerably lower accommodation costs than the better-known routes. For instance, Brandywine Falls is on the route from Boston to Chicago, along with the astonishing Henry Ford Museum outside Detroit, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and the wineries of New York's Finger Lakes.
Going off the beaten track also applies to timing as well as destinations. Shoulder seasons – think March to May or September to November – are usually quieter in both the big cities and the national parks. This means smaller crowds at the likes of Pier 39 in San Francisco or Arches National Park in Utah, plus significantly reduced hotel prices.
Staying away from peak season can also bring more freedom. For example, from 1 December to 28 February, the Hermit Drive along the South Rim of Arizona's Grand Canyon is open to all vehicles, while the rest of the year, you have to take a shuttle bus.
Exploring the great outdoors
Venturing through the States' glorious natural landscapes can work out much cheaper than shelling out for attractions in the city. It costs nothing to go on an elk-spotting mission in the Cataloochee section of Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or hike the hundred miles of trails in West Virginia's New River Gorge National Park.
Beaches, mountain lookouts and forest walking trails generally don't cost a cent. The same applies to wildlife-spotting, whether elephant seals on Californian beaches or bison herds in Montana's American Prairie Reserve.
If your trip encompasses several sites in the National Parks system, the single best investment you can make is the $80 America the Beautiful Pass, available online or at the park entrances. It lasts a year, and with entrance to many popular parks otherwise costing $35 each time, it represents an incredible bargain.
Making the most of money-saving passes
Harnessing the wallet-friendly power of passes doesn't just apply in the great outdoors – it works in cities too. CityPass and Go City offer bundled attractions passes in several US cities, reducing entry costs for the big-hitter experiences, museums and sights.
The principle of buying in bulk to save money also works for public transit passes. In Boston, for example, individual subway fares cost $2.40 but a weekly pass costs $22.50 for unlimited travel.
Many big-city icons are free in the first place, however. These include Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the Smithsonian Museums and National Mall memorials of Washington DC and artist Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate in Chicago's Millennium Park.
To combine several sights, look for free historic walking trails lined with absorbing explanatory signs. Printed maps for the likes of Boston's Freedom Trail and the Trail to Treasure route around Seattle's Pioneer Square can usually be found at visitor information centres, with downloadable versions online.
Should you prefer such walks to be guided, there are several tour companies running on a pay-what-you-wish system. These include San Francisco City Guides, Free Chicago Walking Tours and NOLA Tour Guy in New Orleans.
Tackling the USA in a budget-conscious way, it seems, does not mean missing out.

Travel mayhem as widespread danger causes up to 3-hour delays at major East Coast airports
Air travel along the East Coast has come to a screeching halt as multiple airports have been forced to ground or severely delay all flights Thursday afternoon. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that a major thunderstorm system bringing life-threatening flooding has shut down flights in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Major travel hubs, including LaGuardia Airport, Newark-Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport have all announced ground stops until at least 5pm ET. Other major airports, including John F Kennedy International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, have announced ground delays lasting until at least early Friday morning. The airport chaos has led to flight delays of more than three hours at New York's JFK Airport and New Jersey's Newark Airport. Delays out of Washington's Ronald Reagan Airport, however, have now reached a staggering 268 minutes, or four and a half hours. Flights at Philadelphia and LaGuardia have been delayed by more than two hours due to the dangerous storm. According to AccuWeather, more 43 million people are in the path of potentially deadly flash flooding Thursday. Other airports affected by the delays in the Northeast include Westchester County and Teterboro Airports in New York, Dulles International Airport in Virginia, and Baltimore/Washington International Airport in Maryland. According to Flight Aware, over 5,900 flights into and out of the US have been delayed and more than 1,500 have been cancelled as of 4pm on Thursday. Meteorologists have warned that the Northeast should expect heavy downpours through Thursday night. Flooding is expected in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, with rainfall rates reaching one to three inches per hour in many areas. 'Life-threatening flash flooding is possible, especially around and after dark. People traveling through the region, in basement apartments and other low-lying, flood-prone areas should remain vigilant and ensure they have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings, especially after dark,' AccuWeather meteorologists said in a statement. LaGuardia Airport, which has seen some of the largest number of flight cancellations Thursday, was forced to respond to criticism from frustrated flyers on social media. 'While the weather immediately around you may seem fine, weather conditions around New York and along flight paths play a significant role in weather related delays,' officials wrote on X. New York and New Jersey have both declared a State of Emergency ahead of the severe thunderstorms moving along the East Coast. 'Delayed flight, delayed baggage claim, thunderstorms and flood warnings apparently. You can't make this up,' one frustrated traveler wrote on X. 'My favorite activity is sprinting for a connecting flight you thought was boarding early, only to learn at the gate that it's delayed,' another flyer posted. Thursday's major storm is expected to move south heading into the weekend, bringing even more dangerous weather to the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and the Gulf Coast. Heavy flooding between Friday and Tuesday, August 5 is expected to severely disrupt travel, with some areas of South Carolina and Georgia seeing up to eight inches of rain this weekend. A massive band of severe thunderstorms may continue to ground more flights from North Carolina to Louisiana starting Friday afternoon.

A Reddit user took to the forum called MildlyInfuriating to share their dismay after one of their family members became ill during a recent Norwegian cruise... and was hit with a shockingly high bill afterwards. They explained on the platform that their brother-in-law headed to the ship's medical center after he started feeling unwell. He spent one day and one night in the boat's hospital, receiving antibiotics via IV and undergoing a series of tests to try to uncover what was wrong. 'My brother-in-law's condition was a mystery which required many tests, vials of blood,' he explained. Unfortunately, the doctors couldn't determine the cause of his illness, and to make matters worse, he had to pay thousands of dollars for his 'emergency care.' In total, the Reddit user, who is from the US, revealed that the cruise charged his brother-in-law a whopping $9,750.86. He shared a snap of the bill, writing, 'Don't get sick on a cruise ship.' Some charges on the bill included a COVID-19 test for $274 and a $219 charge for admission to the medical center for 'not-critical observation.' Checking his oxygen level? That cost $109. A consul with the doctor? Another $219. The traveler shared some more info in the comment section, explaining that his brother-in-law was ultimately diagnosed with Lyme disease after he got back home. 'When he returned stateside, the local MD determined it was Lyme disease, which isn't a common ailment down in the tropics and so not tested for,' they explained. They also revealed that the credit card they had used to book the cruise came with medical coverage up to $2,500, which helped cut down the bill slightly. In the end, they said he would be 'opting in on travel insurance' for their next trip. The post launched a heated conversation about medical costs as hoards of other Reddit users rushed to the comment section to share their horror. 'Over $100 to slap a fingertip pulse ox sensor on you?
